FLEETWOOD-SMITH CHUCK: (1908-1971) Australian Cricketer. A.L.S., Fleetwood-Smith, two pages, 8vo, Swansea, 2nd August 1938, to Herbert Webbern, a young English cricket fan, on the printed stationery of the Hotel Metropole. The cricketer announces `I have heard that you were looking forward to seeing the match here, and had the rotten luck to become ill….` and continues `from what I hear about your own ability as a cricketer if you stick at it, I feel sure that one day you will finish up playing for your country and then for England.` Fleetwood-Smith further asks `Have you enjoyed the Tests? We were lucky to win at Leeds, and it was a very exciting game. Naturally you`ll be supporting England & I`m sure that the last Test will be very interesting, and we hope to win, though England have a very fine side.` In concluding he remarks `I hope that I`ll see you one day in Australia as a player of the M.C.C.` Accompanied by the original envelope (only FR) hand addressed by Fleetwood-Smith. Very slight, minor age wear, about VG. The recipient of this letter had been promised by his father that he would be taken to see Australia play against Glamorgan in August 1938, but instead unfortunately landed up in hospital. On hearing the news, Fleetwood-Smith responded with the present letter, and also visited the home of the young cricket fan, playing `cricket` in the garden with his brother and friend.
