A Victorian oak cased Admiral Fitzroy storm stick barometer, the arched ceramic dial with vernier scale, inscribed `Negretti & Zambra Instruments Makers to Her Majesty, ....`, the trunk fitted with a mercury thermometer, rectangular cistern cover, moulded apron, 107cm high Enrico Angelo Ludovico(Henry) Negretti was born in Italy in 1818 and came to Britsain in 1830 serving his apprenticeship with F APizzala, taking over his business in Hatton Garden on his death in 1840. A decade later he teamed up with Joseph Warren Zambra, who was born to immigrant Saffron Walden barometer maker CesareZambra in 1822 and the following year they won a medal at the Great Exhibition. The firm, optical, mathematical and philosophical instrument makers to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (which still exists), expanded rapidly, and the conjunction of the three addresses given on this instrument dates it to 1862-1867
A Precolumbian Colima Culture sculpted red clay model of a hunchbacked beggar with a walking stick, circa 400-500 A.D., the top of his raised head dished, portrayed with pendulous earlobes, the stick in his left hand, 36cm hiigh, 23cm wide. Provenance: This lot is sold with a certificate of authenticity provided by John Alsberg of the Nicole Gallery of Berkeley, California, USA, dated for March 1974, as well as the invoice for the piece. It was purchased from him by Mr E.R.Herman who states in a note with the certificate that Alsberg who had written on the subject became a close acquaintance of his. The pieces then passed by descent to the current vendor.

* A Copenhagen figure of a man, holding a box containing a cat-like animal, a stick in his left hand, painted wave mark to the base, 18th century, 13.8cm. This figure perhaps bears some relation to the origin of the phrase `pig in a poke`, where unsuspecting buyers were sold a wriggling piglet unseen in a box or bag, only to later discover they had bought a cat. Provenance: from a distinguished private European collection.
