Kipling, Rudyard. A series of 26 A.LsS, approx 50pp, mostly 8vo., and six correspondence cards, mainly written on both sides, to Captain Edward H. Bayly (or Bayley) including one to Mrs. Bayly at various addresses including Teignmouth, Royal Naval College, Greenwich, H.M.S. Pelorus, H.M.S. Aurora etc., and one from Caroline Kipling to Mrs. Bayly, many from Rock House, Maidencombe, Devon; The Elms, Rottingdean; Batemans, Sussex etc., most with envelopes, 1891 "“ 1904. With one page signed fragment. The series begins with an undated letter, (without envelope) from shortly after their first meeting, pencilled "Recd. today 22 Sept "™91 Simons Town" complaining of "that blessed fever"...kept me in a state of unholy quiet"; he hopes to see Bayly before the Mohawk sails, and "I shall not soon forget the pleasures of meeting with you". The next letter is from Rock House, Maidencombe, Devon, undated but postmarked 17 Sept 1896, "I was enquiring for you in Torquay"...and got home to find your thrice welcome note which I recognised without opening. There isn"™t another man in the service who writes that beautiful lady's hand"...We are fighting our way, room by room, into a furnished house"; December 31 "™96 he sympathises about Mrs. Bayly's illness and operation, with an ALS from Caroline Kipling to Mrs. Bayly;another similar, 28 Jan. "™97; on March 17 "™97 he is delighted that Bayly has command of a ship, [HMS Pelorus] and "you"™ll just have to smuggle me aboard somehow for the campaign or until we go to the bottom."; June 5 #1897 from Rottingdean to where he has brought the entire family from Torquay where "the air was too soft", wondering when Bayly will next be in port; undated to Bayly on HMS Pelorus at Spithead, , postmarked Ju [ne] "™97, "Right you are! I"™ll do myself the honour of boarding you on the lst"...and I"™ll take my chance in the Brighton boat or with the colonials to see the fleet in being." ; undated, postmarked Brighton, July 15, "™97, ""...I want to thank you for is the pleasantest fortnight that I"™ve ever spent "“ for a glimpse of a new and a fascinating world and for all the kindliness and good-fellowship that I met in every hour of my stay."; from Rottingdean July 19 "™97, "My smallest daughter takes kindly to sea-biscuit"...it keeps her quiet. It would smash my teeth."; undated, postmarked Aug 10 "™97, seeking Bayly's opinion of Kipling's rough notes (not present) of "the show" [naval manoeuveres]; Aug. 18 "™97 he thanks Bayly "for your full & luminous pages they were exactly what I wanted"..." and light heartedly begs favour for his son John when "you are an Admiral of the Fleet some fifteen years hence! Also "Hurry up that M.S. If you don"™t mind I"™m going to lick it over again and once more send it to you. I don"™t want any more bloomin"™ errors than I can help."; Aug 22 "™97 Bayly appears to be in some financial difficulty and Kipling offers help, also referring to his son John; Aug 29 "™97 he recommends a doctor for Bayly's wife; Dec 18 /97, the family are going to Cape Town for the winter; Dec 27 "™97, New Year's greetings; June 17 "™98, "Orph! Orph! Orph! And my little heart is broken. I don"™t believe the Welsh coal had anything to do with it: but all the same I am rather wild because I was looking forward to a time with you and the boys . But what about the C.S.'s tour round the coast? Is that coming off or will Goschen countermand it too? I"™d awfully like to come on that if you could take me along." With an incomplete undated letter, in the same envelope, (torn) ""...the Times tells me that this years manoeuveres are going to be "˜highly important"™ and that I had better go look see.";July 9 "™98, "Many thanks. You are a brick.", but unable to accept an invitation [correspondence card]; undated correspondence card, postmarked Aug 4 "˜ 98, "Unless something unforeseen turns up I propose, with your leave, to report myself to you at Milford Haven on the 22nd"..."; Aug 17 "™98, enquiring about an incident when HMS Pelorus was possibly damaged"...Keep me posted about the enquiry if there is one. I may be able to be of use";Aug 24 "™98, correspondence card, evidently referring to the same incident, "Your voyage with a twisted nose and a hospital reads like a parody"... Salaams to all the wardroom";Sept 14 "™98, correspondence card, "I"™ve got a mail about twice the size of a hayrick to catch up with, every dam fool under heaven seems to have fired a letter at me while I"™ve been away"; Sept 16 "˜ 98, he encloses a newspaper cutting about "Mr. Kipling's Trip on H.M.S. Pelorus", "Trust a newspaper to put its fat foot into anything"...I suppose they think the Channel squadron runs about the seas signalling to "˜distinguished guests"™"..."; undated correspondence card postmarked Dec 19 "™98, "You may be interested to know that I have unloaded all my remarks on both cruises in the " Morning Post" under the title of "A Fleet in Being". I tried the second part on Clark (Commander) here and he said it was precisely correct."; undated correspondence card, postmarked Dec 19 "˜ 98, he welcomes Bayly back and sends ""...a copy for you and the wardroom of "The Fleet in Being". You will see that I have added a few notes."; Dec 26 "™98, "You want to know how the Fleet in Being is catching on? Well, when I last heard of it, it was selling 4,000 copies a day"...I hope some day to bring out an illustrated edition. Meanwhile I am sending to you for the ship, a small memento [an oak shield with copper hammered crest of the Pelorus], with 3 press cuttings enclosed; Jan 22 "™99, "I"™m awfully pleased to know you get [command of] the Aurora "“ even though it means China."; undated, postmarked May 6 "™01, he has recently returned from South Africa, "I"™ve got a lot of Cape yarns to swap with you against Chinese ones when you return", and he asks Bayly to buy jade objets of virtue for Mrs. Kipling, "the greener and the clearer the better"; May 11, 1902, he welcomes Bayly's recent letter and notes that the latter has had a hell of a time with the Chinese, "who as you justly remark, differ from Brother Boer"; undated, postmarked May 23 "™02, he reports on the son of his coachman, now in the navy who has served on the Aurora and described Bayly as "a proper old daddy" ; to Mrs. Bayly, July 24, postmarked "™04, "I can"™t tell you how sorry I am to hear that Captain Bayly has been laid off for a while. "Neurasthenia" is a long and rather a vague word"..."; the final undated letter written to say goodbye on his departure for South Africa, "I shall go down to S"™town and write my name in the Admiral's book and tell him I"™m a friend of yours." Included in the lot is a copy of "A Fleet in Being", 8vo., orig. pictorial cloth (spine browned) 1898, with inscription on verso of upper cover, "Written on board H.M.S. Pelorus (Capt. E.H. Bayly) 1897-8" and signature in pencil on flyleaf, L. M. Bayly [Louisa Mary, wife of Capt. Bayly]. With The Lowestoft Boat, 4pp. printed music, the words by Kipling, the music by Edward Elgar. Rudyard Kipling met Captain Edward Henry Bayly (1849 "“ 1904) when they were both travelling to South Africa on the SS Mexican in 1891. They became friends and met again at the naval review for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee when Bayly invited Kipling on board HMS Pelorus for the Review and manoeuvres. This led to Kipling's book on the navy "A Fleet in Being" 1898. Provenance. A descendant of Capt. E. H. Bayly. ** Envlopes tatty in places, sheet music with damage to edge , corners and fold.
