Shepard (Ernest Howard, 1879-1976). A series of three autograph letters signed, ‘Ernest Shepard’, Woodmancote, Lodsworth, near Petworth, 11th October, 8th November and 14th November 1960, all to Herrmann, concerning artwork for the Christopher Robin Story Book, the first mentioning ‘I think it is a good idea to introduce all the Pooh characters in a suitable background.’, the second, ‘I note what you say and will put the characters higher in the picture. I would prefer to stick to my idea of Pooh reading to the others rather than use Olive Jones’ suggestion. Please thank her for making it’, and the third concerning the dust jacket, ‘I think you will find that black or near-black lettering will tell out sufficiently on the top half where I have kept the trees and sky lighter in tone. How do you like my idea for the little inset on the spine? As the King appears in the story book I think it appropriate that he should appear on the wrapper and show his interest in what Pooh is reading’, the latter letter signed ‘Ernest H. Shepard’, all on printed letterhead, paperclip impressions to upper margin, the first letter one page, the others 2 pp., all 8vo. (3).
