Pair Continental silver plated Arts & Crafts-style candlesticks of slender form, with domed and finned bases, on hexagonal dished stands, hexagonal drip pans and square form candle holders (unmarked), 38cm overall height CONDITION REPORT General overall condition good with minor surface scratching. Victorian sword stick with carved ivory bulldog-head knop with glass eyes, silver mounts, diamond section tapered blade with Malacca shaft, 87.5cm CONDITION REPORT The Malacca shaft is worn. Silver collar is split and in bad condition. The blade itself has rust. The head has a split along the back of the head and several other small hairline cracks
[STRATTON CHARLES S.]: (1838-1883) American Entertainer, known as General Tom Thumb, who achieved fame under the circus pioneer P. T. Barnum. A miniature wooden walking stick of 9.5” in length, with a silver coloured metal base, apparently previously belonging to Stratton. Unusual. Some light age wear, otherwise VG Provenance: The walking stick was apparently presented by Stratton's mother to Mrs. Fanny Moore (nee Dance, 1850-1948) when Stratton appeared at the King's Theatre in Portsmouth. The great grandson of Moore appeared with the present stick on an episode of BBC's Flog It! series filmed in Exeter. During the programme a curator of The Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, Connecticut was consulted over the authenticity of the walking stick and it subsequently sold at auction for a hammer price of £340. A DVD of the episode is included in the lot.
