How a toad became linked to wealth and riches could be due in part to the nature of certain Chinese dialects. The Chinese word for 'toad' is chan 蟾; and in some dialects, the character chan is a homophone to the character for 'money' or qian 錢. Thus, in a dialect, one could easily hear 'Liu Hai playing with the toad' as 'Liu Hai playing with gold coins'. A SUPERB WHITE JADE 'BAJIXIANG' BOWLQianlongThe vessel finely hollowed with deep rising sides exquisitely carved around the exterior with a wide band of archaistic chilong beneath the 'Eight Buddhist Emblems' (bajixiang) including the dharma wheel, endless knot, fish, beribboned vase, lotus, standard of victory, parasol and conchshell, all within a waisted neck beneath the mouth rim, all supported on five ruyi feet, the stone of even lustrous white tone. 16cm (6 1/4in) diam. Footnotes:清乾隆 白玉八吉祥碗Provenance: a Western private collection, and thence by descent來源:西方私人收藏,並由後人保存迄今 The sheer opulence of the bowl is emphasised by the generous proportions of the well-hollowed interior, creating a spatial depth of form. In addition, the Eight Buddhist Emblems, evenly spaced on the exterior, finely balance the archaistic designs of interlacing chilong depicted on the lower register and at the same time, successfully allow for the fine quality of the white jade to show.It is likely that the present bowl was carved after the Qianlong emperor's campaign against the Dzungar Mongols in Xinjiang (1755-1759). This campaign secured control over the area of Khotan and allowed direct access to greater quantities of high-quality jade from the region, compared to earlier periods. Buddhism was the state religion of the Qing dynasty and many emperors were devout practitioners of the faith. Jades, ceramics, textiles, bronzes and other items manufactured throughout the reign of the Qianlong Emperor frequently incorporated Buddhist subject-matter and symbolism. The Eight Buddhist Emblems, Bajixiang, arguably amongst the most readily identifiable symbols found in Buddhist iconography, represent the offerings made to the Buddha Shakyamuni by the gods following his enlightenment. The emblems can be briefly translated as follows: The Wheel of Law falun, the inexorable expansion of the Buddha's teaching; the Conch Shell luo, majesty, the voice of the Buddha; the Umbrella san, spiritual authority, reverence; the Canopy gai, royal grace; the Lotus hua, purity; the Vase ping, eternal harmony, vessel of the nectar of immortality; the Paired Fish shuangyu, conjugal happiness, fertility, protection, spiritual liberation; finally, the Endless Knot chang, eternity. At the same time, the archaistic chilong on the present lot demonstrate the taste for archaism and classical antiquity at the Qing Court. The Qianlong emperor proposed to 'restore ancient ways', referring to the view of ancient culture as having intrinsic moral qualities of sincerity, simplicity and happy exuberance. For this purpose the Emperor instructed the Court to collect drawings of antiquities, such as the Xiqing gujian (Catalogue of Xiqing Antiquities). Jade carvers were thus encouraged to study archaic bronze vessels in the Qing Court Collection or in illustrated woodblock prints, and adapting them to the medium of jade; see Chang Li-tuan, The Refined Taste of the Emperor: Special Exhibition of Archaic and Pictorial Jades of the Ch'ing Court, Taipei, 1997, pp.49-50.Compare with a related but larger white jade 'bajixiang' bowl and cover, Qianlong, which was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 27 November 2013, lot 3398.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A WHITE AND RUSSET JADE 'MYTHICAL ANIMALS AND VASES' GROUP18th centuryOne vase of flattened archaistic gu form with a dragon chasing a flaming pearl carved around the upper body, flanked on one side by a zun-shaped vase supported on a swirling clouds stand, the other side with a double-vase on a mythical bird, the stone of white tone with russet inclusions. 17cm (6 3/4in) wide. Footnotes:十八世紀 白玉三聯式扁瓶擺件Provenance: a Western private collection, and thence by descent來源:西方私人收藏,並由後人保存迄今Finely carved in the round in the form of archaistic vases based on the prototypes of wine vessels manufactured during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, the present jade group displays the Qianlong emperor's penchant for innovative objects that were rooted in archaism. The emperor proposed to 'restore ancient ways', referring to the view of ancient culture as having intrinsic qualities of sincerity, simplicity and happy exuberance. For this purpose the emperor instructed the court to collect drawings of antiquities, such as the 'Xi Qing Gu Jian' (Catalogue of Xiqing Antiquities), which served as base of inspiration to the craftsmen. See Chang Li-tuan, The Refined Taste of the Emperor: Special Exhibition of Archaic and Pictorial Jades of the Ch'ing Court, Taipei, 1997, pp.49-50.The bird supporting the pair of vases on the far right may be identified as a 'heavenly bird' tianji, which is often mistaken for a phoenix. According to the Xuanzhongji or 'Records of Mysterious Phenomena' by the Eastern Jin scholar and writer Guo Pu (AD 276-324), there once lived a giant tree on Mount Taodu which was so immense it shaded an area of five thousand kilometres. The tianji was found perched on the tree while other birds mimicked its singing. Another 4th-6th century record also mentions the tianji as a bird that could fly a thousand miles high and whose flapping wings would produce thunderous sounds when outstretched.See a related jade phoenix vase but without cover, 18th century, illustrated by He Li, in Jade Chinois: Pierres D'Immortalité, Paris, 1997, p.188, no.123. The thin walls of the vessel, highlighting the translucency and purity of the material, probably inspired the creation of white porcelain bowls from the same period. A PALE GREEN JADE IMPERIALLY-INSCRIBED BOULDERQianlongCrisply carved as a rounded rocky grotto enclosing a bearded scholar strumming a guqin on a ledge, all beside gnarled pine trees, finely incised flowing water underneath, the top right section incised in elegant kaishu calligraphy with an Imperial poem, the stone of even pale green tone, wood stand. 16cm (6 1/4in) wide. (2).Footnotes:清乾隆 御題詩《松陰橫琴》巧雕玉山子Provenance: an English private collection來源:英國私人收藏The inscription on the present boulder reads: 御製松陰橫琴抱琴松下來,獨坐聽流水。聲不在絲桐,卻在心與指。Which may be translated as:Imperially made 'Playing qin under the shade of pine trees'.Coming under the pine trees, I hold a qin in my arms.I sit alone listening to the sound of the flowing water. The sound does not come from the strings and wutong wood. But comes from my heart and fingers. The poem is published in book 13 of the 'Collected Imperial Poems' (御製詩初集卷十三). In the anthology it is recorded as being written in the Guihai cyclical year corresponding to 1743, when the Qianlong emperor inscribed it on a painting by Zhu Lunhan 朱倫瀚 (1680-1760), of a scholar playing the qin. The poem, like the carving, depicts a scholar playing the qin, attuning himself not only to the music but the nature of the cosmos. The sound of flowing water relates to the physical stream and sound of the water, but also the famous melody 'Flowing Waters' (流水) played by the famed qin player Bo Ya of the Eastern Zhou period, to his cherished friend Zi Qi, who understood and appreciated the meaning conveyed through the music. The names Bo Ya and 'Flowing Waters' thus came to be almost synonymous with the notion of intuitive understanding and deep friendship. Hence the term for a close friend in Chinese is zhiyin (知音), literally, 'someone who knows the sounds'. For the Qianlong emperor, an accomplished qin player himself, the musical instrument would not only have exemplified his mastery and guardianship of traditional Han Chinese literati culture, but also his understanding that music and governance in a Confucian context were related; a musician who understands harmony can bring harmony to the realm. The present lot belongs to a small group of jade boulders and screens which were carved with Imperial poems authored by the Qianlong emperor and which additionally relate to paintings - thus connecting the written word with pictorial and three-dimensional representation. The auspicious theme refers to King Wen of the Zhou dynasty who had ninety-nine sons and adopted one more to make one hundred. In the present vase, each of the boys are engaged in activities laden with symbolism: the boys carrying a vase, for example, make up a pun for peace; the boy holding the chime sheng, whose name is a pun on the word 'ascend', in one hand, and a ruyi sceptre in the other, underscores the wish for attaining an official career. Barrett & Co., London, 25 May 1971An English private collection來源:倫敦古董商C. Barrett & Co., 1971年5月25日英國私人收藏The character for sheep or goat, yang (羊), appeared as early as the Han dynasty as a pun for xiang (祥) meaning auspicious or lucky. By the Qing period, the image of sheep had become heavily associated with yang (陽), another homophone but signifying the sun or warm, positive, masculine force in Chinese cosmology. In the present carving, the connection with this yang force is made apparent with the yin and yang symbol issuing from one of the rams. The sheep imagery then developed into three sheep, san yang (三羊), which is a reference to the favourable arrival of spring, since the phrase sanyang kaitai (三陽開泰), points to the period between the winter solstice and the New Year. This was the period when the warm yang energy is emerging, as detailed in the ancient Chinese classic of prognostication, the Yijing, or Book of Changes.Compare with a related jade three-sheep group, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures in the Palace Museum: Jadeware (III), Hong Kong, 1995, p.108, no.88.
