A GOLD AND SILVER-INLAID 'FIGHTING BEARS' BRONZE MAT WEIGHT, WARRING STATES TO HAN DYNASTYOpinion: While bronze mat weights from the Warring States Period or the Han dynasty are rarer and rarer to come across on the market, it has nowadays become almost impossible to find one with such well preserved and detailed inlay work. The drama of the depiction has been copied over and over during later periods, and for all kinds of purposes, but it has never been achieved again to the extent found in the present lot.China, 5th century BC to 2nd century AD. Boldly cast as two ferocious bears locked in combat, one biting into his opponent's back as this one roars in anguish with his tongue outstretched. Finely inlaid in gold and silver, the two animals with scroll and geometric decoration as well as subtle detailing to their bodies, the sides of the circular base with a scroll band between line borders.Provenance: From a noted private collector in the Pacific Northwest, USA.Condition: Superb condition, commensurate with age. Wear, signs of weathering and erosion, corrosion, malachite and cuprite encrustation, nicks, scratches, losses and cracks. The gold and silver inlays exceptionally well-preserved. A bronze weight of around 2,000 years of age or more in such well-preserved condition must be considered exceedingly rare.Weight: 590.0 gDimensions: Diameter 6.7 cm, Height 5 cmWith a velvet-padded silk storage box. (2)Mat weights crafted from precious materials such as bronze and jade, often gilded or inlaid with gold, silver or gemstones, were produced in sets of four and served a practical function of anchoring down woven mats for seating. Mats and corner-weights were believed to have been used at banquets, even those laid out in tombs. Inlaid animal-form weights were discovered in the tomb of Dou Wan, consort of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan (d. 113 BC), alongside food and wine vessels. The sculptural depiction of animals in combat was introduced to China from the nomadic and semi-nomadic cultures of Central Asia, the Eurasian steppes, and the Ordos region, and was an innovation particular to the Warring States and Han dynasty periods. During the early Western Han dynasty, the imperial Shanglin zoological park and hunting reserve adjacent to the walled city grew in size and importance. Conceived as a microcosm of the empire, it allowed the emperor and his courtiers to observe and study the various species of plants and animals known at the time. The site also served as a venue for orchestrated animal combat for the entertainment of the court.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related silver and gold-inlaid bronze mat weight from the Han dynasty depicting a ram and tiger, illustrated by Jenkins, Mysterious Sprits, Strange Beasts, Earthly Delights: Early Chinese Art from the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Collection, Portland, 2005, page 60, and now in the collection of the Portland Art Museum. A PALE GREEN JADE 'CLOUD-SCROLL' PENDANT, HONGSHAN CULTUREChina, c. 4000-3000 BC. Well carved and pierced, the stylized cloud scroll with subsidiary elements protruding from the four corners, pierced with two circular apertures for suspension. The translucent stone of a pale green tone with pale brown shadings and icy inclusions.Provenance: From the estate of Ivar Bjoernberg. One side with an old label, '91'. Ivar Bjoernberg (1934-2021) was a noted art director from Stockholm, Sweden. He was friends with Victoria Lindstroem, a reputed dealer and collector of Chinese art, also based in Stockholm at the time. Bjoernberg worked at her gallery at a young age and when he eventually started his own collection, she mentored him. His collection was an academic one and it showed his keen eye, discerning taste and great passion for the aesthetics of Chinese art. Condition: Very good condition with ancient wear, tiny nicks and nibbles here and there, signs of weathering and erosion, the stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks over time. Some of the small 'grooves' appearing on the surface of this jade may be a result of weathering due to long-time burial, rather than intentional carving.Weight: 81.5 g Dimensions: Length 13.2 cmThe Hongshan culture, from which this plaque comes, remained unknown until the 1980s. Centered in northeastern China, it is known for large ceremonial structures built with rocks, graves lined with stone slabs, and distinctively shaped jades that were often the sole goods found in tombs. Judging from the holes on its back and on the top center, this piece may have been an ornament, however, its exact function cannot be deciphered until more archaeological evidence becomes available.Literature comparison: Compare a related jade cloud-scroll plaque, 9.8 cm wide, also attributed to the Hongshan culture, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 2009.176.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Sotheby's London, 4 November 2021, lot 386 Estimate: GBP 25,000 or approx. A GREEN JADE 'BIRD' PENDANT FRAGMENT, WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY China, 1100-1000 BC. The flat stone carved in the form of a stylized bird, each side with grooves forming the wings and tail. The opaque jade of a grayish-green color with areas of white calcification.Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. E.3.21A-H. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou's years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou's drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China's rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived of the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968 he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the Museum became a 'must see' destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China's glorious history. Condition: Condition commensurate with age. Old wear, weathering and erosion, nibbling, some chips and losses. The stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks over time.Weight: 7.2 g Dimensions: Length 7.6 cm Expert's note (added 20.2.2023): Jades such as the present lot can be dated to as early as the Shang Dynasty. It has been theorized that they were once made as adornments and supports for elaborate lacquer vessels imitating the designs of ritual bronzes (see image section). None of these complete vessels have ever been found. This original intended use eventually fell out of fashion with the repurposing of these archaic examples for bodily adornment. See Qian Yang's thesis: The Circulation of Jades in Early China (Late Neolithic - Eastern Zhou, ca. 4500 -221 B.C.). Literature comparison: Compare a closely related jade plaque, described as a fish, Western Zhou dynasty, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 24.51.7. Compare a closely related jade plaque of a bird, in the British Museum, accession number 1947,0712.465, and illustrated in J. Rawson, Chinese Jades from the Neolithic to the Qing, British Museum, 1995, p. 227, fig. 1, where she notes that during the Western Zhou dynasty, the tail became more horizontal and looks more like a 'fish' tail, such is the case for the present lot.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 26 May 2021, lot 127Price: HKD 56,700 or approx. Rawson,《Chinese Jades from the Neolithic to the Qing》,大英博物館,1995年,頁227,圖1;他在書中指出,在西周時期,鳥尾巴會被雕刻地較水平,看起來更像一條“魚”尾巴,這就是本拍品的情況。

A SMALL PALE CELADON JADE 'HUMAN FIGURE' ORNAMENT, HUANG, WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTYChina, 1100-771 BC. The arched ornament is neatly carved in relief depicting two human faces on both ends, with intertwining dragon bodies. The translucent stone is of a pale celadon tone with one larger area of creamy-white calcification as well as cloudy white inclusions and dark specks.Provenance: From the estate of Ivar Bjoernberg. One side with an old label, '76'. The low collector's number on the present lot indicates a rather early acquisition date of the present lot, given the commonly known size of Bjoernberg's complete collection, probably around 1980/90 or even earlier. Condition: Very good condition with ancient wear, tiny chips and nibbles which have smoothened over the centuries, signs of weathering and erosion. The surface of this jade feels remarkably soft and unctuous, a result of centuries of handling and appreciation, indicating an excavation that took place a long time ago.Weight: 23.3 g Dimensions: Length 8.8 cmExpert's note: The unusual motif on this ornament, depicting two human faces with intertwining dragon bodies, can be found on a small number of Western Zhou jades. The closest example is a jade huang with similar human-dragon motifs in the Palace Museum Collection, illustrated in Zhongguo yuqi quanji 2, Shang & Western Zhou, Shijiazhuang, 1993, plate 292. A rectangular jade ornament, in the Palace Museum Collection, bears a related single human-dragon motif and is illustrated ibidem, plate 280. Also compare a closely related but significantly more calcified jade huang from the Yangdetang collection, illustrated in Teng Shu-p'ing, Collectors' Exhibition of Archaic Chinese Jades, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1999, plate 129, and a related jade huang depicting two intertwining dragons with similarly combed hair, dating to the early Western Zhou period, excavated in Tengxian in Shandong province, and illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji 9, yuqi, Beijing, 1986, plate 83.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's Hong Kong, 29 November 2017, lot 2746 Price: HKD 7,060,000 or approx. A 'CHICKEN BONE' JADE 'KUI DRAGON' PLAQUE, LATE MING TO EARLY QING DYNASTYChina, 17th to 18th century. Of rectangular form, finely carved and reticulated with a central rectangular plaque framed by two confronting kui dragons to the top and two phoenixes to the bottom, their faces neatly incised with almond-shaped eyes. The opaque stone of creamy ivory tone with red alterations, pale celadon areas, and extensive veining.Provenance: British trade. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few small nicks and minuscule nibbling to exposed areas, the stone with natural fissures.Weight: 55.6 g Dimensions: Length 6.4 cmChicken bone is a term for a rare and highly coveted nephrite jade of an opaque creamy beige color, often with extensive dark veining, which was particularly valued between the later Ming and early Qing dynasties. It is also sometimes said to be 'burnt jade', which has an opaque chalky appearance, usually with minute cracks all over the surface. It is known that nephrite - when heated to about 1000 degrees Celsius in a dry atmosphere - breaks down into diopside, enstatite (a magnesium silicate) and some quartz. In an experiment in the Freer Gallery Laboratory, samples of blue-green and white nephrite were submitted to temperatures up to 1025 degrees Celsius, and both altered to an opaque chalky beige color with no change in the shape of the piece or the decoration of the surface. The chief mineral which resulted was diopside, and several nephrite jades in the Freer which appear to have been burnt also give a diopside x-ray diffraction pattern. Jadeite, when heated in a similar manner, behaves quite differently: it fuses to a glassy material, the surface smoothens out, and if the object is small enough, it bends out of shape. The specific chicken bone color pattern of the present bowl may have been produced either by nature, or by deliberately heating the nephrite in a workshop, or by accidental exposure to fire. The collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing, for example, contains numerous chicken bone jades that were burnt in fires which erupted at the palace over the centuries.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's London, 13 May 2016, lot 513Price: GBP 86,500 or approx. A FINE PALE CELADON AND CHESTNUT BROWN JADE 'MONKEYS AND PEACH' GROUP, 18TH CENTURYChina. Intricately and imaginatively depicted with an adult monkey gently embracing a young in its right arm, both holding a peach, the young further with a ruyi scepter in his left raised hand, the scepter suspending a long band with a jade chime, all naturalistically carved with wrinkled foreheads and the adult monkey with protruding spines finely detailed with incised hairs. The translucent stone of a pale celadon tone with areas of chestnut-brown and grayish white, interspersed with few dark speckles.Provenance: From the private collection of Anthony Gustav de Rothschild. De Rothschild inherited his father's passion for collecting, starting to collect Chinese jade and works of art after a trip to China in 1911. Most of his objects were assembled during the 1920s and 1930s. The present lot belongs to a group of important jades which Rothschild gifted to his eldest daughter Renee Louise Robeson (1927-2015) before he eventually donated the family home to charity. (2)This jade carving of monkeys exemplifies the masterful craftsmanship achieved in the jade ateliers during the 18th century. The craftsman would have assessed the unusual jade stone composed of the rare contrasting pale celadon and chestnut-brown tones, utilizing the fine natural material to create the exceptionally skillful carving.Homophones for monkey, hou, include the Chinese words for 'nobleman', 'high official', and 'descendants'. The monkey therefore represents the wish for the success of one's descendants. The representation of monkey and peach also relates to the legendary figure of Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, who became notorious for stealing the peaches of immortality. A PALE CELADON FIGURE OF A BOY WITH A HOBBY HORSE, 18TH CENTURYChina. Carved as a striding boy holding the reins of the hobby horse with one hand, the other holding a leafy lotus stem. The translucent stone of a pale celadon color with faint russet patches and veins, and cloudy white inclusions.Provenance: From the collection of the late Michael Sherrard CBE, QC, acquired before 2000 and thence by descent. Michael Sherrard (1928-2012) was an English barrister in fraud and company law who was considered one of the great recent influences on the legal profession. He was involved in numerous high-profile cases in both English and East Asian courts, particularly Hong Kong and Singapore. Together with Linda Goldman, he wrote a memoir titled “Wigs and Wherefores: A Biography of Michael Sherrard QC”. Sherrard was an enthusiastic collector of Chinese art, especially jade carvings.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, minuscule nibbling to the base, the lotus flower with a small chip. The stone with natural imperfections and fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks over time.Weight: 74.0 g Dimensions: Height 65 cmExquisitely modeled in the round to depict a boy astride a hobby horse, the reins of which he lovingly clutches whilst slinging stems of lotus over his shoulder, this carving captures the playful ease and charm of the subject. Images of boys playing with a hobby horse form part of the popular 'boys at play' and 'Hundred Boys' subjects that emerged during the Song dynasty. This theme is symbolic of the Confucian ideal for the education and advancement of many sons, a wish further emphasized by the lotus he carries which is a homophone of 'continuous' and creates the rebus 'May you continuously give birth to sons'. As the boy is depicted riding a hobby horse, this conveys the further wish for it to come quickly as 'to be on top of a horse' means 'immediately'.Literature comparison:Compare a related carved jade figure of a boy, but holding a rattle instead of a lotus stem, in the collection of the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, collection number BATEA 1218. It is sometimes referred to by the Chinese as 'the father of Chinese music' or 'the instrument of the sages'. Traditionally, the instrument was simply referred to as the 'qin' but by the twentieth century the term had come to be applied to many other musical instruments as well. Crafted from the distinctive deep green stone, they were characterised by intricate carvings that depicted human visages with exaggerated features, such as downturned mouths, almond-shaped eyes, and broad noses. The masks also incorporated serpentine imagery in the form of coiled snakes or serpent-like figures that surrounded the faces or extended from the top of the masks. It is believed that serpentine masks were utilised in ceremonial and ritual contexts, likely in conjunction with funerary practices or religious festivals, and were probably worn by priests or other elite members of society during these events. The masks also held symbolic value as status symbols, owing to their valuable materials and the skilled craftsmanship required to create them. The Olmec civilization has had a profound impact on the development of modern art, particularly during the early 20th century, when Western artists rediscovered the art of ancient cultures, including that of the Olmec. This renewed interest in Olmec art influenced the emergence of modernist art movements such as Cubism and Surrealism. Olmec sculptures' stylised, geometric forms, such as the iconic "colossal heads," served as sources of inspiration for artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore, while the Olmec's use of negative space and abstraction was influential in the development of modernist sculpture. In addition, the Olmec's fascination with the natural world, particularly the serpent, inspired Surrealist artists such as Salvador Dali and Max Ernst, who integrated serpent imagery into their works. The Olmec's use of jade and other precious materials also influenced modernist jewellery and decorative arts. Today, the Olmec's legacy remains a significant source of inspiration for contemporary artists who continue to draw on its bold forms and use of negative space.
