A late 19th/early 20th century Swiss ‘’Black Forest’’ carved wood hall stand, the mother bear depicted wrapped around the base of the tree, and a bear cub playing in the branches, the base incorporating a stick well, 216cm high**conditionreport**There is some minor wear and losses to the surface finish of the wood. There are also some minor contraction cracks where the wood has dried out as well as some damage to the shoulder of the larger bear. Most of the joints are loose and somewhat ill-fitting. There is also other scuff marks and historic wear through use. The end of one of the branches is broken and a section is missing. MARITIME INTEREST: AN AMERICAN MARINE IVORY 'WHALER'S' WALKING CANEMid 19th Century The sectional shaft with baleen spacers, mother-of-pearl terminal and lanyard apertures, with inscription reading 'This Whaling Stick WAS MADE BY B. MEIN. on board the Ship Fabius, Capt.n Chase, while cruising on the Coast of Peru ON A WHALING VOYAGE it contains 14 teeth taken out by himself and captured in the boat which he belonged to', 87cm longThe Fabius was a whaling vessel from Nantucket, Massachusetts, and likely sailed between 12th July 1840 and 6th April 184, captained by Frederick B. Chase (1795-1873). ('Catalogue of Nantucket Whalers And Their Voyages From 1815 to 1870' by Hussey & Robinsons publishers 1876). It was possibly on this voyage, undertaken to collect valuable Sperm whale oil, that the stick was constructed, a typical project undertaken by whalers to utilise the less valuable whale bone and ivory. Captain Chase is listed as being interred in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Nantucket.
