Merrythought - A boxed Limited Edition by Licence Merrythought 'Rupert Bear'. The hand made, jointed white mohair bear with plush body, stands approx. 47cms tall, wears a red jersey and yellow and black stripped trousers and matching scarf, with white viny boots,appears to be in Excellent condition overall. Rupert has a Merrythought swing label attached to him, together with a certificate stating that he is number 39 of an 'edition of licence' - the certificate is detached from the swing label. Rupert is housed in an Excellent box with a Very Good clear plastic lid with a minor tear to one corner. Rupert also comes with his original outer packaging box which appears in Good - Very Good dusty condition with general age and storage wear. The lot also contains a factory sealed 'Rupert's Adventure Book' 1940 facsimile edition which appears Mint.(2) (This does not constitute a guarantee)

A fine late 19th century hand-decorated Continental bust - girl wearing a gilt-highlighted cloche decorated with flowerheads in the Elizabethan style; her jacket with a yellow draped scarf with roses in high relief; on gilded shaped socle, blue printed mark to underside (15cm high)Condition Report: The vertical feather is clearly missing from the underside of the applied cross-shaped mauve flower to her left-hand side. There appear to be blemishes and discolouration to the left hand cheek, some rubbing of gilding through handling etc. Also - minor extremities to flower edges etc. otherwise in reasonable condition.

Burgess (Thornton W.). Lightfoot the Deer, 1st edition, Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1921, 8 colour plates by Harrison Cady, including frontispiece, front free endpaper with authorial inscription in ink, original blue cloth, spine slightly toned and rubbed at ends, colour illustration mounted on upper cover, 8vo, together with a typed letter signed from Thornton Burgess to Mr. Whittemore dated June 21 1954, thanking him for his letter, saying "The news that Reddy Fox will never catch Peter Rabbit in my stories seems to have travelled fast all over the country", and expressing his amusement that a passing comment he made in a television interview was newsworthy, going on to mention the enclosing of a photograph as requested, 1 leaf headed paper, 8vo, and Cady (Harrison, 1877-1970), Peter Rabbit, pen & ink on paper, depicting a rabbit wearing trousers and braces, and a striped scarf, sitting on a bank and conversing with a bird perched on the branch of a tree, captioned to lower margin 'Peter pricked up his long ears. "Why are you glad[?"] he asked.', signed lower right, small brown spot, sheet size 19.2 x 15.5cm (7.5 x 6ins), mountedQty: (3)Footnote: Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Eileen Tenney a friend of my friend, Lightfoot the Deer. Because I love him I hope you will and that is why it gives me great pleasure to sign my name as your friend, Thornton W. Burgess, signed at Springfield, April 21, 1921." The original illustration by Harrison Cady is for Burgess Bedtime Story published in the New York Herald Tribune in 1949. Cady's 'Peter Rabbit' comic strip was launched by the newspaper in 1920, and the artist continued to write and draw the strip for the next three decades.

Early 20th Century Costume and Accessories, comprising a black crepe sleeveless full length evening dress with sequin decoration and cut out back; black lace mounted dress with beaded under dress, long sleeves with later chiffon cuffs and hem; white lace blouse with three quarter length sleeves and high neck; green floral chiffon scarf with fringed trim; double fox stole (5)Condition report: Beaded evening dress in overall good condition, few marks to the hem and wear to the decroation under the arms. Lace dress - a few minor losses to the beadwork on the underdress and significant wear to the lace under both arms, and another hole by the hip. Lace blouse possibly missing some buttons at the bottom, slight discolouration undert the arms and a couple of other small marks. Scarf appears generally ok. Fox stole, with damage and repair needed to lining.
