An early 19th century Anglo-Scottish lady's commonplace book, compiled and curated by Maria Duff, inscribed with various MSS, including select passages of Lord Byron's oeuvres, further Romantic verse, prose and maxims, select passages and original compositions, unusual early Shakespearean cartoon of stick figures: Shakespeare Illustrated, Nos. 1 and 2, 1822, illustrated with contemporaneous engravings, etchings and chromolithographs, comprising some caricatures, portraits, Picturesque British topography and sentimental scenes, one page with dried foliage specimen, embossed paper fancies and further amusements, recto of blue endpaper applied with a rectangular paper framed embossed by Dobbs with roses and thistles and inscribed in ink MS with verse on the pleasures and tribulations of life, the verso of the endpaper inscribed MHS to Maria Duff, August 1822, within a cut pink paper garland of flowers and laurels, later presentation inscription, full Regency oxblood morocco binding, gilt-embossed with foliate fillet and tendrils, Gothick tracery, the spine with alternating foliate bosses within raised bands, gilt-edged leaves, tall 4toProvenance: almost certainly the same Maria Duff (b. 1796), daughter of Maj.-Gen. Patrick "Tiger" Duff of Carnousie, who married Francis Garden-Campbell, 7th of Troup and of Glenlyon (1793-1826) on September 25th 1822 at St Marylebone, London. The date of 1822 at the beginning of her commonplace book could very well indicate that the volume was a gift and companion for her on reaching the maturity of a wife and leaving girlhood behind. A year after her widowhood the then Mrs. Maria Garden-Campbell married, as her second husband, James Ramsay (b. 1797), the second son of John and Mary Ramsay of Barra, at Westminster on August 13th 1827.
A late Victorian/early Edwardian silver-mounted ebony officer's sword stick, 69cm blade, domed silver pommel inscribed RBF, Guards Club, [London], 87cm long overall, silver maker's mark JD, London, rubbed date letter, c. 1900 Condition Report: Light dents, wear, scratches to pommel but not affecting inscription. The shaft and blade good. Probable replacement brass walking tip.
An Edwardian gentleman's horn and bamboo sword stick, 72cm pointed cylindrical blade, crook-shaped horn handle with yellow metal mounts chased with foliate scrolls, 88cm long overall, c. 1910; an early 20th century British Colonial military pith helmet, stamped 162 WD O with department arrow, c. 1930 (2) Condition Report: The sword stick with rusted blade, loss to mounts & tip, some scratches and stable splits to bamboo; the pith helmet in fair condition with some fading, broken leather strap and signs of light wear.
Militaria - an Elizabeth II silver-mounted and bridle leather officer's swagger stick, the spherical pommel grip cast with the military insignia of the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own), silver tip, 63cm long, the mounts probably by F Narborough, Birmingham 1955 Condition Report: Overall fair given age and nature of use. The pommel grip with wear, including dents, scratches, tarnishing and occasional stable split. The tip with similar wear.
An unusual 7mm walking cane 'blow' gun, bamboo clad brass barrel, the brass top unscrewing to reveal a rubber padded mouth piece, the upper section of the stick holding a captive shuttle which, it appears, must be propelled forward by the user's breath until the fixed firing pin protrudes into the rear of the chamber, London Company proof marks, 87 cm (34 in.)
A set of four George III silver candlesticks, John Schofield, London 1783, with beaded borders, 28.5 high approximately 2110gm Condition Report: The candlesticks are numbered by notches in the bottom edge of the socket part of the drip tray which correspond to engraved lines in the upper part of the nozzle. There may be a second numbering system, crude lines scratched in the underside of the sticks, these numbers do not correspond to those on the sconces/drip trays.Each drip tray has scratches to the upper surface, they are quite bad particularly to 3 and 4 where the scratches can be seen ghosted under the trays. Trays 1-3 have lion passant and maker only, tray 4 has lion passant only. There are a few minor dents here and there to the sticks. Each has faintly inscribed numbers to the outer edge for the foot (scratchweight?) Each hallmarked to inner edge of foot, marks crisp. Each has a crudely scratched line(s) under l-llll. Stick 1 has two circular marks to outswept section beneath nozzle. Stick 3 has a bulge under the bottom knop where it has been pushed down on. Stick 4 has slight bend to rim of nozzle, small bend to foot rim and the whole stick leans a bit, from bottom knop where there must be a small bend. There are no crests or armorials.
A pair of silver candlesticks, Thomas Bradbury, London, 1919 with decorative capitals and swags on square bases with beaded borders, 26cm high Condition Report: 1456:This is a matched pair, one London 1919, one Sheffield 1919.The London stick has a few dents and is slightly leaning as a consequence. Otherwise condition in line with age and usage.
