Captain Edward Cornish Henley, 2nd/4th Royal Hampshire Regiment, a group of six medals, comprising 1939-45 Star, The Africa Star, The Italy Star, 1939-1945 Defence Medal and 1939-1945 War Medal, and Territorial Efficiency Medal, George VI, dated 1950, together with two dog tags, cap badge, leather-covered swagger stick and an Elliott and Fry Ltd black and white studio photograph of Capt. E. C. Henley in uniform. Captain Henley (son of Major C. F. Henley) was killed in action by an artillery shell while conferring with another company commander during the attempted Crossing of the River Rapido at Monte Cassino, 12 May 1944. TEM confirmed London Gazette 21 June 1950 as Capt. (T. Maj.) E. C. Henley (943-12) (killed in action). This lot also includes some research papers and photograph and negatives of the Cassino Military Cemetery grave inscribed to Major E. C. Henley.
Four 19thC Brussels Lace Fans: the first with sixteen Mother-of-Pearl sticks and two guard sticks, intricately carved in light relief with foliate decoration and highlighted in gilt, with shaped gold coloured metal loop and cream silk tassel, contained within a cream silk-covered box marked 'Giovanni Gilardini, Portici 20 Settembre 85 Genova', one stick broken, 10in (25.5cm) long,17½in (44.5cm) span, together with another with fourteen Mother-of-Pearl sticks, one broken stick, and two guard sticks, intricately carved in light relief and pierced with romantic scenes of figures in costume, 11½in (29cm) long, 21in (53.5cm) span, and a third fan of similar size with fourteen Mother-of-Pearl sticks and two guard sticks, one guard stick broken, carved and pierced with foliate decoration highlighted in gold, with metal loop, and the fourth, of black silk gauze appliqued with Brussels lace and tiny sequins on sixteen Tortoiseshell sticks and two guard sticks, five sticks loose and five sticks broken (5)
A late 19th century Chinese ivory and satin asymmetric Fan, with eighteen plain sticks and two guards, each guard stick with a small oval carved cartouche, the cream satin leaf embroidered with birds, butterflies and foliage, 12in (30.5cm) long, 21¼in (54cm) span, repairs to metal swing loop and slight wear, together with fitted black lacquer box the hinged lid lined with padded and painted silk, together with a 19thC hand painted lace and ivory stick fan, the lace in poor condition, in fitted black lacquer box (4)
A 19thC Chinese Canton export Ivory Brisé Fan, with guardsticks carved in relief each side with figures, dragons, flowers and animals, the sixteen sticks pierced and intricately carved in low relief with a continuous scene depicting Chinese dignitaries, musicians, dragons, pagodas, willow trees etc. and a central vacant oval cartouche, 7¼in (18.5cm) long, 12¾in (32.5cm) span.Note: one stick missing from left of centre span
