The double paper leaf is simply painted with a couple in fine dress, seated on a rock in a rural setting, with two further perhaps more rural folk making conversation. Simple buildings with birds along the roofline are behind. The verso is plain save for a simple drawing of fencing and vegetation. Guard length 27cm (2). Fan 1 - The gilding is dull. Guard length 29cm; and A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with slender monture, the upper guards carved and pierced, the gorge more delicately, the double paper leaf with decoupage. The recto shows two couples cavorting in the countryside, next to a ruined building. The verso shows a simple rural scene. Guard length 28cm (4). Fan 1 - The silk leaf is splitting on some folds. Loss to one of the thumb guards. Fan 2 - Loss to one mop thumb guard. The leaf is splitting on several folds. The decoupage is generally sound save for one section top right next to the guard, patched from behind. The leaf is a little grubby. Fan 4 - The leaf has been shortened to the side and gorge sticks are missing. One guard has a replacement section at the top.

Lot 478

An Early 18th Century printed and hand coloured double paper leaf mounted on slender ivory sticks, a rural scene of daily life tending sheep and gathering produce. The intricately carved ivory monture is painted in a dull pale green, over which delicate painting and gilding is applied. The slender gorge sticks are in pairs and alternating with a single stick of different shape. The verso is relatively plain cream. Guard length 26cm. Repair to the upper guard with a brass plate. The gorge shows some loss to the ivory and at least two sticks have been reinforced from behind. Some splitting to the leaf and earlier repairs.

Lot 483

A Fine 18th Century Ivory or Bone Brisé Fan, painted in bright blues and pink, further embellished with applied gold foil in the shapes of tassels and flowers. A pretty maiden with delicate features is painted centrally, to her sides large urns of flowers are placed, with various swags and cornucopia filling the reserves. Twenty-six inside sticks and two guards. Tortoiseshell thumb guard. Guard length 21cm. Seemingly one stick missing as the “archway” over the maiden is not balanced, and her skirt is unfinished. Possibly a second stick missing to the left outer edge. Rubbing of paint to the lower guard. Some indication that this fan could be bone but hard to see with the painting. Ribbon sound.

Lot 485

An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the slender monture finely pierced, the gorge with the addition of a carved central cartouche with figures, the guards with gold foil showing through. The velum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is painted in bold colours with David and Abigail and two other gentlemen, outside ruins, a ruined tower in the distance. The reserves are delicately painted with small flowers along the top border and gilt highlights, the decoration becoming darker and stronger to the sides. The verso has some simple floral sprays in gold. Guard length 26.5cm. Together with a period mottled green fan tube. The leaf has had restoration, seen from the verso, and one gorge stick is not in the correct position. Some other folds are splitting and need attention. The colour is however very good and the leaf seems less rubbed than might have been expected.

The designs are bordered with very tiny sequins in gold and pale green, and flowers are outlined in metal thread embroidery. The verso is plain. Lot 489

An Early to Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the gorge and guards well carved and pierced, the gorge with figures and birds. The velum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is painted with a charming picture of a dog, chained to a tree stump, looking mightily guilty as its mistress admonishes it, presumably for having chased a bird which has escaped from a birdcage. Local country folk who appear to have been engaged in the rescue look on. Guard length 28cm. Some nicks to the top of folds. Some small holes along the bottom border of the leaf. One gorge stick has a chipped shoulder. Break/repair to the top quarter of the lower guard, which is also stuck to the first stick in.

Erminia, princess of Antioch, on horseback, disguised in the armour of the warrior Clorinda, seeking the warrior Tancred, passes a seated shepherd weaving a basket, two small children playing instruments and an older boy carrying a cane. The verso is plain. Guard length 27.5cm. A break to the upper section of the upper guard. A slight split to one gorge stick near the shoulder. The double paper leaf is quite darkly painted to the recto with a soldier and lady under a stone arch, small children, winged cherubs and a further lady to the sides. The cherubs are carrying armour, to the left a shield and to the right a helmet, most likely thus a depiction of Venus presenting arms to Aeneas. The verso is painted with the bold and vibrant flowers indicative of the period. Blue stone to the rivet. Guard length 26cm. Some wear to the gorge paint. Leaf quite rubbed. Some nicks to upper folds. Leaf shortened as both guards have the first stick in stuck to them.

Twenty-eight inner sticks and two guards. Guard length 21cm. Contained in a brown leather non-original fan box. One central stick detached/broken at the rivet end, the lower part mainly being present and perhaps previously restored. The painted ribbon is defective.
