HISTORICAL: A rare pair of Staffordshire Pottery Camel Riders: Sir Richard & Lady Isobel Burton, circa 1861, each riding a camel, he with a green bonnet cap, both painted in colours, 22cm high (2) Refer: 'Staffordshire Portrait Figures' by P D Gordon Pugh, page C292/93, figure 279/280. The Burton's are notable 19th century explorers in Africa and sought the source of the river Nile. She is notable as the fist white woman to do so in Africa. The male figure has a chip to his nose and the camel he is on has a chip above right eye. The female figure has a firing fault to face and head scarf and the camel she is on has firing crack on tail.
THEATRE: A splendid Staffordshire Pottery Theatrical Figurine, modelled as a Lady and Gallant aboard a Horse Headed Ship, he standing in blue tunic with a plaid scarf, she beside him, the elegant craft upon a waved base, 23.5cm The cataloguer was unable to locate a source for this piece, however it is likely to represent two named Victorian opera singers in a staged production. Perhaps it represents Frederic & Mabel aboard HMS Pinafore from The Pirates of Penzance, first staged in 1879. A previous catalogue suggests this may represent the Lifeboat heroine Grace Darling.

A Hermes 'Grands Fonds' Silk Scarf, designed by Annie Faivre, 32ins square, in silvered frame and glazed, and a Hermes scarf box Provenance: Kings Gallery, 28 Palace Street, Canterbury, Kent CT1 2DZ This scarf has not been inspected out of the frame. It appears to be in good condition with no obvious damage/loss. It is difficult to see the edges as the scarf is tightly framed. It is not possible for us to comment on the reverse of this scarf as it is framed. The box has wear to all edges and corners, creasing and marks to the lid and two pieces of clear sticky tape to base. The leaflet is in good condition with very slight wear to page corners. Prospective buyers are advised to inspect all images carefully prior to bidding as these images form part of the condition report.

His work has been exhibited at many shows including the Geffrye Museum, London, Retrospective at Leeds City Art Gallery and at the Graves Art Gallery. In 1977 the BBC Arena Programme made a film about his work and a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Sutton has received several commissions, including the design for two tapestries at West Dean College, a London Transport Soho Poster, and a set of new stamps for the Post Office in 1987. Sutton was elected a Royal Academician in 1988 and lives and works in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
