Brian Arthur Stenson Barnes was born on 19th November 1925 in Peshawar, Pakistan. The son of Air Vice Marshall William Edward and Kathleen Barnes. Barnes was educated at Downside Abbey, located in Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset. After attending Sandhurst, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant into the Irish Guards (LG 22.11.1944). His service number was 330889. He saw service in Palestine from 1947 to 1948 as a Captain with the 1st Bn and was awarded a GSM clasp Palestine 1945 to 48. In 1965 while serving in Borneo, attached to the 2nd Bn The Parachute Regiment, Barnes was Mentioned in Despatches, announced in the London Gazette on 14th December 1965. Barnes served in Dhofar and was awarded the Sultan of Oman's ' Sultan's Distinguished Service Medal.' 'Lieutenant Colonel Barnes raised the Desert Regiment, trained it to a sound operational standard in only 14 months, and commanded it successfully for eight months in Dhofar. Throughout his time in Dhofar, Colonel Barnes led by example with strong and determined leadership. Wherever his men were operating he went, never hesitating, to share their dangers, driving along roads and tracks susceptible to mining, carrying out hazardous flights and landings to be with them. He carefully preserved his resources in flying hours and used the maximum number of men offensively against the rebels. These efforts resulted in fifteen rebels reported killed, and a larger number reported wounded. He proved himself a bold and resolute leader, an inspiration to his officers and men, calm and with common sense, a fine trainer, and an able administrator. I recommend that his leadership and devotion to duty in raising, training, and finally commanding his battalion on operations be recognised by the award of the Distinguished Service Medal' Lieutenant Colonel Barnes passed away in 2004.

Lot 689

UK-supplied in the rare colour of Jet Black and presented in a simply stunning condition with bookpacks and historic DVLC paperwork. Unrepeatable - Offered Without Reserve.Conceived as a comfortable and long-legged Grand Routier, rather than an out-and-out sports car like the preceding E-Type, the XJ-S made use of the Jaguar XJ6/XJ12 saloon platform and running gear. Shorter in the wheelbase than its saloon siblings, the XJ-S debuted as a V12-powered Coupe. It was not until 1988 that a full convertible became available, however, and it was a marvel of engineering. It is fair to say that Jaguar took their time to perfect the convertible mechanism and such was its durability it was adopted by Aston Martin for the DB7 Volante. The 5.3 V12 Convertible produced between 1988 and 1991 is acknowledged as the XJ-S Convertible in its purest form.To the enthusiast, a car’s history is as important as its condition and we are grateful to the nephew of the first owner of this exceptional motorcar for providing the story as to why it was never registered. The car, finished in rare Jet Black, was bought new by Mr David William Jewett in 1989. Mr Jewett had a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cambridge and, whilst lecturing at Seale Hayne Agricultural College in Newton Abbott, restored and sold tractors on the side. His reputation was such that he acted as a consultant for both Massey Ferguson and Marshall Tractors.Taking delivery of the car from Jaguar main dealers H. A. Fox of Plymouth and with the new decade dawning, Mr Jewett decided to wait until 1990 to register the car on a 'G' plate, however, a major heart attack delayed the process. On the 13th September 1991, Jaguar Cars Limited prompted him to register it by supplying the accompanying application for a “Licence for a New Motor Vehicle and Declaration for Registration” together with a compliment slip signed by the regional sales manager David Stevens. Mr Jewett chose not to register the car and instead enjoyed it as a work of art, regularly starting and running the car up to temperature around his property. Mr Jewett’s nephew facilitated the sale of the car in 2009 with 73 miles on the odometer, four years later Mr Jewett passed away, and we are told he would’ve loved the attention this car is now receiving. The car remains unregistered to this day and the odometer shows just 100 miles. Bearing trade plates, the car clicked over to 100 miles on the journey from the local Jaguar main dealer following a service to the MOT testing station, who provided an advisory-free Certificate valid until 8th August 2023. It's presented to auction in a condition, as you can imagine, that is unrepeatable and ready for the road, the jack and cased tool kit is present. The green Jaguar wallet contains the handbooks and the service book is stamped and signed by supplying dealer H. A. Fox, made out to Mr Jewett and stickered with the car’s chassis and engine numbers. Included too is the main dealer service receipt dated 8th August 2022, the aforementioned registration application, corresponding Jaguar compliment slip, two cased cassettes and the spare key.SpecificationMake: JAGUARModel: XJSYear: 1990Chassis Number: SAJJNADW3DB164522Registration Number: TBATransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: 8S070090SADrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 100 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: CreamClick here for more details and images

FORSTER (E.M.)A late nineteenth century Arts and Crafts ebonised 'Morris' adjustable-back reclining armchair, designed by Philip Webb and possibly made by Morris, Faulkner & Co/Morris & Co. formerly in the possession of E.M. Forster, the arched arms with bobbin turned spindles, the legs united by bobbin turned stretchers, arms and loose cushions upholstered in later Morris & Co 'Seaweed' design fabric, 97cm high x 68cm wide x 79cm deepFootnotes:FORSTER'S MORRIS & CO. RECLINING ARMCHAIR FROM HIS ROOMS AT KING'S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE.In his biography, Nick Furbank gives a detailed description of Forster's rooms when he first knew him early in 1947, a few months after Forster's arrival in Cambridge: '...The first thing that caught one's eye in the room was the mantelpiece, designed by his father, an elaborate oaken structure... in front stood a long sofa with a padded rail, rather shabby, flanked by two William Morris armchairs, also shabby, and swathed in knitted shawls...' (Furbank, P.N., E.M. Forster: A Life, 1977, p.291). Callers would usually find Forster '...in the further armchair, a shawl over his knees if it were winter, and letters, opened and unopened, strewn in quantities around him... He would throw himself back in his chair, in rather a sack-like way, and address himself benevolently, with an air of leisure, to conversation...' (ibid, p.292). Our chair can clearly be seen in several photographs of Forster in his rooms at Cambridge, published both in Furbank and in Wendy Moffat's E.M. Forster, A New Life, London, 2010. A photograph showing the armchair in situ and dated in pencil on the reverse by Furbank ('1947') is included in the lot.A similar example of this chair is held in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum (CIRC.250&A/1toB/1-1961), whose catalogue notes that the design originated in the late Georgian period and was discovered by Warrington Taylor, business manager of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. in a Sussex carpenter's workshop in 1866. The design was developed by Philip Webb for manufacture and produced by the firm from about 1869. It became one of the firm's most popular designs and was available in black, as here, in line with contemporary 'aesthetic' taste, or mahogany with a choice of upholstery in 'Utrecht Velvet' (costing 10 guineas in 1912) or chintz (at 8 guineas), most likely the original fabric. Nick Furbank and the present owner both had the chair re-upholstered in more recent times.Provenance: E.M. Forster (1879-1970); P.N. ('Nick') Furbank (1920-2014); his friend and executor Dr W.R. Owens, the present owner (see adjacent lots). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
