AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY PALE OAK, WALNUT, ROSEWOOD AND SATINWOOD STRUNG WHITEHURST OF DERBY EIGHT DAY LONGCASE CLOCK, the broken swan neck pediment with brass rosettes on ring turned columns, arched door enclosing a painted 31cm dial with makers name to the arch, Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and date dials, gilt floral spandrels, the trunk door with shaped top flanked by reeded quarter columns, plinth base on bracket feet, with pendulum and two weights, height approximately 217cm (condition: some patches of paint loss to the dial and cracking, side section of a foot loose)info/condition: No.6208, we think it is likely that the movement and case began life together, the painted dial has a number of patches of losses around 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock, at 1,2,4 and 5 o'clock, also near seconds dial and in just above the dial some patches of staining to case, some veneer missing to hood door and inlay missing

A George II mahogany longcase clock, 27cm brass dial, inscribed Hindley, York, Roman and Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, twin winding holes, 8-day movement striking on a bell, the arch applied with a lotus boss on a moss velvet ground, the hood with dentil cornice and brass capped reeded Corinthian columns, arched rectangular door to waist, plinth base, 218cm high, c.1740Henry Hindley (1701-1771) was born at Wigan, apprenticed to his father 1715-1721 before setting up in Wigan where he worked until 1731, when he moved to York to take over his father's practice there. An important clock and watchmaker, he was a friend of John Whitehurst FRS, the inventor of an improved wheel-cutting engine and made the clock for the Minster at York in 1750. He also made a regulator with pin wheel escapement. A number of apprentices are recorded as having been articled to him. He was succeeded by his son, Joseph (1728-1774).Loomes, B. J. Pattinson/Repton, 96.5cm high.John Whitehurst II (1761-1834) was apprenticed in Congleton to his father James and succeeded to the firm started in Derby by his famous uncle, John Whirtehurst FRS (1713-1788). His son John (1788-1855) was apprenticed to him 1802-1809 after which he joined his father in business, their products thereafter being signed Whitehurst & Son/Derby and numbered from a year or so later, suggesting this instrument was made c. 1809/1810.Revd. John Pattinson was vicar of Repton from 1804. Dr. J C Cox, writing in 1878 of an ancient stone under the tower of the church, 'It will scarcely be credited that a late incumbent (Rev. John Pattinson) had it taken away and cut and dressed to form a door-step for the parsonage dairy!'.

VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Whitehurst clock - Two weights present but no pendulum. No number evident. Surface wear and dings as expected. Not running. Movement appears complete (see images). Other clock has wear and tear, with later electric movement (not working).

A large early 19th century mahogany barometer, by Whitehurst & Sons, Derby, with crossbanded boxwood and ebony strung case. Height 110 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The barometer appears to be in working order. The swans neck pediment is in good condition. The back of the piece is all original with the correct hinges and clips. One hinge has been moved. The sides of the barometer are in good condition with no issues. The polish to the front of the case is a little marked, scratched and scuffed in places but again there are no losses to the veneers or stringing. The very bottom of the barometer case has a flat rectangular section of ebonised wood. There is a loss to the bottom left hand corner of this moulding. All brasswork is original but has lost much of its original finish. The adjusting knob is original. The silvering to the thermometer is perishing in places. The silvering to the dial is generally good with only minor rubbed areas. The brass bezel and glass are original and in good condition.

Good mahogany eight day longcase clock, the 12" silvered square dial signed Whitehurst & Son, Derby, with subsidiary seconds dial, the case of flame mahogany with rounded arched long door flanked by canted corners and the hood surmounted by a triangular pediment, 82" high (large wooden rod pendulum with calibration nut and pair of original weights indistinctly stamped, possibly IW or 18) This clock is also sold with the book by Maxwell Craven - John Whitehurst of Derby (Clockmaker & Scientist 1713-88) *The back of the dial is engraved with the date 1818 and the initials I.W. in a small triangle (for John Whitehurst). The movement has shouldered plates with rounded edges and baluster pillars. The back cock is of typical Whitehurst design

Whitehurst Interest - a George III longcase clock movement, 33.5cm arched enamel dial inscribed Smith, Alfreton, Roman and subsidiary Arabic numerals, the arch painted with a girl and her dog, batwing paterae to spandrels, 30-hour mechanism countwheel striking on a bell, marked WW to edge, ringed pillars, 46cm high, c.1800 Benjamin Smith II was b. c. 1744 and apprenticed to his father Benjamin Smith I (1721-1774), succeeding him in 12774. He was twice married and retired in 1807 selling his stick-in-trade to John Platts of Alfreton. Many of his long case movements appear to have been supplied from the Derby workshop of John Whitehurst I & II, these invariably being marked on the lower edge of the plates WW as here.

The red card cover shows a taped on label along the spine with the film’s title, and a cut-out window on the front revealing the working title 'Fengriffen'. THE SWEENEY (TV 1975-1978) (TV) - Annotated Episode Scripts and Ephemera A set of production materials from the 1970s crime television series The Sweeney. This set consists of two episode scripts used by assistant director Derek Whitehurst, featuring handwritten annotations throughout. Displayed in an orange ring binder folder, the episode script for 'Big Brother' is printed on 70 white A4 plus pages with pink-coloured revisions. The second episode script for 'Thin Ice' is presented in a yellow ring binder folder, printed on 72 white A4 plus pages with green coloured revisions. Accompanying them are cast lists, handwritten shooting schedules, location lists and newspaper clippings, along with two books – an annual with a dedication to Whitehurst and an episode storybook. TREASURE ISLAND (1950) (1950) - Production-Used Script A script from Byron Haskin’s live-action Disney adventure film Treasure Island (1950). The script was assigned to Derek Whitehurst, who served as an uncredited clapper boy on the production. It contains 167 printed 10" x 8" pages, including green and blue-coloured revisions, bound with metal staples. The white card cover displays the film’s title handwritten in blue ink across the front covered by clear tape. Accompanying the script is a folded, black-and-white double-page clipping from the publication 'Illustrated', dated 10 December 1949. Signs of production use and age are evident on the script, including the cover page coming away from the body of the script where the metal staples have corroded, tape stains and worn edges. FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL (1974) - Contract and Ephemera Peter Cushing’s personal note, contract and ephemera from Terence Fisher’s Hammer horror Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell. The personal note is handwritten on white card by Cushing, who played Baron Frankenstein, to assistant director Derek Whitehurst. Accompanying the note is an A4 copy of Cushing’s contract(unsigned) with Hammer Film Productions, a magazine clipping from the film and a letter from a crew member to Whitehurst detailing cast requirements for a scene in the TV episode 'Somewhere in a Crowd’ from the series Journey to the Unknown. This set is comprised of two scripts and an array of production paperwork and printed materials, including a Bray Studios brochure, four Hammer Production unit lists, shooting schedules, memos, progress reports, breakdowns, cast lists and a Scars of Dracula photograph. CONDITION REPORT: Lot 668 - Hood restored and altered, frieze panel below cornice replaced, glass panel replaced.Single finger movement appears to have been restored and mounts on later board, door mounted on later hinges, lock replaced.
