Lot 120

Nameplate AMIE ex Industrial Locomotive. Standard Gauge Class H 0-4-0ST built by Manning Wardle No 1716 in 1907 and sent new to Staveley Iron & Coal Co. Ltd. where it worked for its lifetime. It was normally kept at Staveley Foundry. To Steel Breaking and Dismantling Co. Ltd., Chesterfield, for scrap in November 1960 where it was broken-up in 1961. Rectangular brass 25in x 6.75in, ex loco condition.

Industrial Nameplate BEXHILL. Ex Standard Gauge 0-6-0ST which was built by Manning Wardle as their No. 1365 in 1898. It originally worked for contractors H.M.Nowell and S.Pearson and Co. Ltd before going to the Ministry of Munitions at Darlington. In 1919 it was acquired by J.F.Wake, Dealers , of Darlington and was sold on to James Smith who owned an Ironworks at Hamworthy in Dorset. In about 1937 it moved to the British Sugar Corporation’s Factory at Sproughton just outside Ipswich and was scrapped there in 1952.

A small collection of ephemera relating to the Rhead family: comprising seven photographs of Frederick Alfred, Charlotte and Dollie Rhead, including other family members, a letter dated 7th April, 1906 from the Secretary of the `International Jury of the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition` to Harry Rhead of `Messrs Wardle & Co. awarding him a Bronze Medal Diploma`, an e.p.n.s. nurses buckle and belt, but comprising primarily of correspondence and diaries pertaining to the late Richard Harry Cronin Rhead and his mother Marie.*Provenance: From the Estate of Richard Harry Rhead Cronin, son of Marie Elizabeth Adolphine Rhead (sister to Charlotte Rhead)

*Biography. The Rheads were an old North Staffordshire family who had been connected with pottery production since the 18th century. Frederick Alfred Rhead [1856-1933] was to follow the family tradition of potting but combined it with that of artist and designer. At the age of thirteen he joined Mintons as an apprentice painter and a year later was assigned as an apprentice to Louis Solon, the leading exponent of the difficult and skillful technique of pate-sur-pate. Frederick worked for Solon until 1877 and the following year joined the Wedgwood factory. He also worked as a freelance for firms such as Pinder, Bourne and as art director for James Gildea, Brownfield`s and Wileman & Co. In 1912 he joined Wood & Sons and then in 1929 Cauldon Potteries which at that time was a conglomerate including Royal Crown Derby, Royal Worcester and Ridgways. Five of Frederick`s six children were involved in the pottery business, Frederick Hurten Rhead [1880-1942] and Charlotte [Lottie] Rhead [1885-1947] are probably the best known. Frederick Hurten worked for most of his life in the United States for firms including Tiltonville, Wheeling, The Weller Pottery, Roseville, his own firm Rhead Pottery and the Homer Laughlin China Company. Charlotte Rhead [1885-1947] started her career at Wardle & Co. in Hanley and it was here that she developed her skills as a tubeliner. She subsequently worked for Keeling & Co., T&R Boote and with her father at Wood and Sons. She is probably best known for her work at Burgess & Leigh [Burleigh Pottery] and A.G.Richardson [Crown Ducal]. PROVENANCE: The present collection is being sold on behalf of the Executors of the estate of the late Richard Harry Rhead Cronin. Frederick Alfred Rhead and his wife Adolphine had six children: Frederick, Henry, Marie, Charlotte, Catherine and Adolphine. Richard Harry Rhead Cronin was the son of Marie and therefore Charlotte Rhead`s nephew. A fine Frederick Alfred Rhead, probably for Minton, pate-sur-pate porcelain vase: of cylindrical form decorated with an angel holding aloft a large bowl with text below `And when the angel with his darker draught draws up to thee-take that and do not shrink` taken from verse 48 of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, signed F.A. Rhead, 30.5 cm. * Provenance: From the Estate of Richard Harry Rhead Cronin, son of Marie Elizabeth Adolphine Rhead (sister to Charlotte Rhead)

EARLY 20TH CENTURY SCHOOL The Coolgardie Oil on board Old label (certificate of discharge) on reverse 43 x 59cm Provenance Hose Rhodes Dickson, Isle of Wight, UK 31/03/11 lot 503 Letter dated 23rd April 1985 from the Lloyd’s Register of Shipping in London. Coolgardie. This vessel started life as BOTHWELL CASTLE. She was an iron screw steamer of 2542 tons gross (1653 tons net) built in 1881 by R. Dixon & Co of Middlesbrough. Her dimensions were: Length: 329.1 feet Breadth: 38.3 feet Depth: 26.0 feet Her original owners were T. Skinner & Co, but she was sold to Mc.Ilwraith, McEacharn & Co, Proprietary Ltd, who changed her name to COOLGARDIE in 1899. Her home port became Melbourne. In 1913 she was sold to W. Crosbie, in 1915 to W.J. Wardle, and in 1921 to Eastern Shipping Agents Ltd, her home port remaining Melbourne. She was broken up in 1922

Ltd, London 1908, in the classical style, the oval urn-shaped nozzles with detachable drip pans, above tapering stems, on oval filled bases, each engraved with inscription "Presented to the Officers 3rd (Militia) Durham Light Infantry by 2nd Lt. M.K. Wardle 1907/by Major & Hon. Lt Col. W/T/ Trotter, 1908', 12in. (30cms) high.

‘Honeysuckle’, an Arts & Crafts embroidered curtain or wall hanging by Morris & Co., designed by William Morris, worked by Jane and Jenny Morris, floss silk on printed linen, green cotton backed, remains of label verso, 267cm x 150cm. Exhibited: The first Arts and Crafts Exhibition, 1888; sent by May Morris to the British & Irish Arts & Crafts Exhibition, Paris 1914 (worn label stitched verso). Worksplate Manning Wardle & Co Ltd., 2044 Leeds England 1925. From the very last 0-4-0 Locomotive built by the company, originally sent to Robert Walker Trustees, South Ferriby. Oval brass approximately 11" x 6¼". Ex loco condition, one bolt hole enlarged when removed, doesn`t detract from this rare plate.

Lot 481

Industrial Nameplate VULCAN, with matching Worksplate Manning Wardle & Co 1577 Leeds 1902. Ex Class O 0-6-0ST, ex works on the 11th November 1902. Worked all its life at Acton Hall Colliery, Featherstone near Wakefied in Yorkshire wher it was also known as `Acton Hall No 4`. Scrapped on site by Wakefield Metal Trading Ltd on 10th January 1968. The nameplate is cast brass and measure 24" x 6½", red lettering on green ground, totally ex loco. The Worksplate is oval cast brass measuring approx 11" x 6¼", totally ex loco. A wonderful Industrial set, seldom on the market as such.

Worksplate Manning Wardle & Co Ltd., No 2000 Leeds 1921. Oval brass, approximately 11" x 6" also engraved `Rebuilt 1939 R. Stephenson & Hawthorns. The number `30` is clearly stamped on the rear of the plate. Ex 0-4-0ST used by the Central Electricity Generating Board at the Lister Drive Generating Station, Liverpool where it carried the Number 2. An extremely desirable plate indeed.

Elkington & Co. A Victorian silver gilt and champlêvé enamel 'Pompeian' dessert service designed by Auguste- Adolphe Willms, of three tazze enamelled in blue, red and black with anthemia, the corona on three scrolled guilloche supports, cavetto base with apron and paw feet, 20 & 40cm h, fully marked, maker's mark, Birmingham 1864, further marked 645 on the pair and 753 on the largest tazza and with PODR mark for 3 May 1862, 119ozs (3) The highly regarded French sculptor, A-A Willms (1827-1899) was hired by Elkington & Co to take charge of the firm's design studio. He left Paris for London during the Revolution of 1848, working for French emigree goldsmiths J-V Morel & Co. On returning to Paris, Willms worked for Christofle & Cie and F-D Froment-Meurice on designs for their exhibits at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. For Elkington, his 'Graeco Pompeian' Dessert Service, one of many of his works displayed on the firm's stand at the London International Exhibition in 1862, proved highly popular, leading to the award of the Exhibition Medal at the London International Exhibition of 1862. In particular, the lightness and originality of the strictly classical design provided Elkington with the ideal opportunity to display the Birmingham firm's mastery of the traditional skills of the goldsmith's art combined with its latest technical innovations such as electro-gilding and forming The Art Journal described the Service in glowing terms "A very notable feature in the contributions of Messrs Elkington was a magnificent Dessert Service, designed by A Willms, in the Pompeian style, and executed in silver, enriched with enamel and gold." An electroplated seven-piece example of the design was sold, Sotheby's, The Great Exhibitions Sale, 31 October 2006, lot 537. Literature: The Illustrated Catalogue of The International Exhibition 1862, vol 2, Class XXXIII, pp 7- 8; Waring (J B), Masterpieces of Industrial Art and Sculpture at the International Exhibition 1862, London 1863, vol 3, plt 211; The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue of The International Exhibition 1862, London 1863, p240; Wardle (P), Victorian Silver and Silver Plate, London 1963, Fig 11; Culme (J), Nineteenth Century Silver, London 1977, p205. ++In fine as new condition except :1) insignificant flat chip to the enamel on the vase shaped knop on the large tazza and2) lacking the rosettes from the scrolling supports. No regilding, wear or restoration.

Lot 434

Industrial Nameplate BIRKENHEAD ex Manning Wardle 1661 of 1909 scrapped in 1950. The plate was then transferred in 1951 onto Andrew Barclay 1355 ex 0-4-0ST with OC which was built on the 13th June 1914. Used first, before naming at James Kennedy & Co Bo'ness until 1951, then Joseph Perrin and Son at Birkenhead Docks where naming took place. Scrapped 1957.
