Timo Sarpaneva (Finnish 1926-2006) for Iittala Large "Orchid (Orkidea)" Vase Designed 1953, production mid-1950s, steam-blown and polished clear glass, signed Tapio Wirkkala 3568. 26cm high The William "Bill" Davies Collection of Scandinavian Glass. Timo Sarpaneva designed the "Orkidea" vase for the 1954 edition of the Milan Trienniale of Design of where it won the Grand Prix, encapuslating his and wider interest at the time in exploring organic, asymmetrical forms. Bill Davies led a very successful career as an architect, primarily working in his native Wales, with his most celebrated project being the Plas Menai complex situated on the Menai Strait which serves as the National Watersports Centre for Wales and has been awarded Grade II and II* status - it was described as 'arguably the most admired and influential building completed in Wales in the last quarter of the twentieth century’ by Professor Richard Weston*. Bill was also commissioned for architectural work by Cardiff University and indeed served as a Lecturer in Design at the institution, playing a major part in developing the course into one of the highest rated in the United Kingdom.His major inspirations were the celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the leading Finnish designer Alvar Aalto: from this stemmed Bill's enthusiasm for all aspects of mid-century design with the glass of Scandinavia becoming his particular passion, or rather, obsession. An Orrefors Glass Vase by Vicke Lindstrand, stylised with Art Deco figures, signed and dated 30', 5.5ins highThere is no obvious signs of discolouration and the glass stands well. There is slight scratching to the base, three very small chips to three different 'corners' on the rim, as well as one light chip to one of the sides of the vertical panels.
Scandinavian glassware to include: a Vicke Lindstrand for Kosta Boda Tree Birds vase, etched marks to base (H 11cm); two Riihimaen Lasi Oy tapering vases, one in green (H 22.5cm) and one in yellow (H 16cm), both with etched marks to base; an Arabia for Marimekko blue glass tea light holder in box (H 6cm). Together with four other mid-century glass vases, three of which are probably unmarked Riihimaen pieces, and a leaf shaped glass bowl, all unmarked. (9)

LARS SESTERVIK; a hand-blown multicoloured studio glass vase, from the Lindshammar Glassworks Sweden, signed and dated 2000, to base, approx. 19 x 26cm.Condition Report: - Lars Sestervik is one of Sweden’s most internationally recognized designers, and has been rewarded for his work with both the Norwegian Design Prize, 1988/1989, and Vicke Lindstrand prize 1997. He is regarded as an artist with a great diversity and ever-changing design.This piece was hand blown in Lindshammar Glassworks. This glassworks was founded in 1905 by Robert Rentsch, a German glassblower who had worked at Pukeberg and Kosta. Anton Petersson bought the glassworks in 1916 and modernized it. He was succeeded in 1949 by his son Eric Hovhammar, who completely rebuilt the factory.Art glass production only started in 1949, with the arrival of Gunnar Ander. Some of the designers that worked at Lindshammar were Christer Sjogren, Tom Moller, Gosta Sigvard, Sigvard Bernadotte, Catharina Aselius-Lidbeck, Matz Borgstrom, Erik Hoglund (freelance from 1978-1981), Lillemor Bokstrom. Bosse Falk, Maud Gjeruldsen Bugge, Lena Hannson, Lars Sestervik and Sofia Wiberg.
