A DOCUMENTARY GEORGE III BRASS TIPSTAFF with open crown finial, engraved John Floud Aug 1792 John Nares Dec 1795 William BrodyieNov 1796 Worship St [London], ring turned ebony handle and brass end, 37.5cm The Worship St Shoreditch Public Office opened in 1792. The three men whose names are engraved on the present tipstaff were successive Captains, the first holder of the office being John Floud. John Nares was promoted to Bow St in 1807 where he remained until 1816. William Brodie served at Worship St, from 1796 to 1801. In 1748 the author Henry Fielding was appointed Chief Magistrate for Westminster and established the first force of paid constables at Bow St. Each of the seven Public Offices established in 1792 had three Magistrates for six Constables, one of the latter being appointed Captain. ++In good condition considering the long use in service and age. Some of the engraving slightly faint from wear but all legible, some polish residues but undamaged
