An Important Collection of 17 Period Articles Documenting the Discovery of DNA, An important collection of 14 papers documenting one of the most important scientific milestones of the twentieth century, recording the discovery of the molecular structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the early research that lead to its discovery as well as later papers on the DNA, the main component of chromosomes and the material that transfers genetic characteristics in all life forms. Forty years after Watson and Crick's discovery, so much of the basic understanding of medicine and disease has advanced to the molecular level that their paper may be considered the most significant single contribution to biology and medicine in the twentieth century" (One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine, p. 362). The double helix describing the molecular structure of DNA has not only reshaped biology, it has become a cultural icon, represented in sculpture, visual art, jewellery, and toys. In 1962, Watson, Crick, and Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material." By the early 1950s the DNA had become one of the most important questions in biology. Maurice Wilkins of King's College London and his colleague Rosalind Franklin were both working on DNA, with Franklin producing X-ray diffraction images of its structure. Wilkins also introduced his friend Francis Crick to the subject, and Crick and his partner James Watson began their own investigation at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, focusing on building molecular models. After one failed attempt in which they postulated a triple-helix structure, they were banned by the Cavendish from spending any additional time on the subject. But a year later, after seeing new X-ray diffraction images taken by Franklin (notably the famous 'Photo 51', which is reproduced in the third paper), they resumed their work and soon announced that not only had they discovered the double-helix structure of DNA, but even more importantly, that "the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material." 1.- A structure for deoxyribose acid, and Molecular structure of deoxypentose nucleic acids, and Molecular configuration in sodium thymonucleate. A particularly fine Second World War Mosquito navigator's D.F.M. group of four awarded to Pilot Officer L. J. Etheridge, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who completed 50 sorties over France, Holland and Germany in 1944-45, an action packed tour that included a brace of crash-landings back in England after damage sustained in action - once on one engine with a hung-up 500lb. bomb: so, too, the spectacular daylight raids on the S.S.-occupied Chateau de Fou in August 1944 and S.S. barracks at Arnhem in the following month Distinguished Flying Medal, G.VI.R. (1603309. F/Sgt. L. J. Etheridge. R.A.F.); 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; War Medal 1939-45, generally good very fine (4) £3,000-£4,000 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, March 2008. D.F.M. London Gazette 8 May 1945. The original recommendation states: 'Flight Sergeant Etheridge has completed 50 sorties with his pilot, Flight Lieutenant Gasson, including three daylight operations. This N.C.O. has proved himself to be an excellent operational Navigator. He has never failed to bring his pilot to the target area, often despite poor weather conditions and without navigational aids. Some of the sorties in which he was engaged involved very deep penetrations into enemy territory, where accurate navigation, without Gee facilities, was vital to the success of the missions. The results obtained by this Navigator and his pilot have been outstandingly good as the following examples will show. On the night of 6-7 August 1944, a moving light was attacked in France and due to the fact that the attack was pressed home to a low level the port engine was hit by a ricochet and caught fire at 1500 feet. The port propeller was feathered and the graviner switch operated. The return flight was made on one engine and Flight Sergeant Etheridge's accurate navigation brought them safely to England. It was found that height could not be maintained with the result that the English coast was crossed at 400 feet and a crash landing made at Ford. On the night of 4-5 October 1944, when carrying out a patrol over Holland and Germany, two trains were found in a railway station at Millingen, which were attacked with bombs and cannon. A large explosion followed the attack and later a fire started. During the same patrol a tug and six barges were found and successfully strafed. Flight Sergeant Etheridge also took part in the successful daylight operations against the chateau south of Chatellerault on 2nd August, trains at Chalons on 25 August 1944 and on the barracks at Arnhem on 17 September 1944. Flight Sergeant Etheridge possesses great determination and coolness in times of crisis. His fine offensive spirit, which is equal to that of his pilot, has gone to make an ideal Mosquito crew. In view of his fine operational record, I strongly recommend him for the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.' Laurence James Etheridge was born in Hampshire in January 1921. He commenced his operational career with 107 Squadron, a Mosquito unit of 2nd Tactical Air Force's 138 Wing, operating out of Lasham, in July 1944, when, with his New Zealander pilot, Flight Lieutenant L. Gasson, he completed an offensive patrol over Vire-Falaise-Trouville sector on the night of the 24th-25th. Indeed it was to prove the first of a spate of such patrols in support of the Allied landings, 107’s Mosquito VIs targeting enemy troops, transport and communications, often with great success, according to the Squadron's Operational Record Book (O.R.B.), by means of bombing and cannon fire delivered from altitudes as low as 500-1000 feet. Success was also dependent on a bright moon, a case in point being Etheridge's third sortie - against targets in the upper reaches of the Seine, from Rouen on the night of 30-31 July - when 107's Mosquitoes strafed and bombed a variety of trains, bridges, roads and in fact, any moving lights, but not without interference from the usual flak concentrations which had a habit of 'creeping up on the unwary'. Etheridge's next sortie was of the daylight variety, one of a series of famous strikes against the S.S. and Gestapo, in this case an attack on troops of the notorious 158th “Security” Regiment - who had recently murdered members of the S.A.S. - in the Chateau de Fou, south of Chatellerault on 2 August, a spectacular raid captured on camera, and one in which his aircraft, Mosquito A-NT. 136, formed part of the third wave - never the best place to be with aroused defences: ‘In the woods to the immediate south of the Chateau, one large explosion was seen after a cannon attack, possibly from motor transport. Bombs landed all round the Chateau but no direct hit was claimed. Strikes were obtained on the roof in a cannon attack and a small fire was seen to start inside. Aircraft ‘D’ sustained the loss of one engine over the target and crash landed at Thorney Island - crew unhurt. The trip back was uneventful except for a little flak soon after leaving the target, which was successfully avoided by all except F./O. Staple in Aircraft ‘J’ ... It is doubtful if the Chateau was entirely destroyed but troops possibly hiding in the woods would have been eliminated’ (107’s Squadron Operational Record Book refers). Two days later Etheridge was part of a Squadron effort to lend support to the Army in the Caen sector, when 'much activity was seen in the battle zone and flak was very considerable', while on the night of 6-7 August, as cited above, he and Gasson were compelled to return from France on one engine, the other having been set alight by a ricochet from their own low-level cannon-fire - not mentioned, however, is the fact they were carrying a hung-up 500lb. bomb as they made their crash landing at Ford in Sussex and that said bomb exploded just two minutes after they had scrambled clear of the wreckage. Notwithstanding such a close-call, both were back in action over France, chasing trains out of Paris, the very next night. So, too, on the 8th-9th, evidence indeed of 107's constant operational agenda, another three nights of successive operations taking place between the 12th-15th, in one of which further trains were shot up in the Falaise sector. And as if this "three-nighter" agenda were not punishing enough, Etheridge and Gasson were called upon to carry out two sorties on the night of 16th-17th, both of them strikes against barges on the Seine - such was the ferocity of the flak that neither could see the results of their attacks. Bad weather then having intervened, their next sortie was flown on the night of 23-24 August, on a line between Cap D'Antifer and Lens, another on the 24th-25th, and a daylight operation against railway targets at Chalons in the afternoon of the latter date - a spectacular mission in which a number of oil-trains were hit, exploding 'with a terrific mushroom of flame and black smoke', but a mission, too, in which most of the participating aircraft were also damaged by return fire: a vivid portrayal of 107’s Mosquito VIs on a low-level railway strike over France, by David Pentalnd, is available as a limited edition print from Cranston Fine Arts. The Squadron now having moved to Epinoy, France, September started with a deep penetration sortie into Holland and Germany on the night of the 5th-6th, severe jamming preventing the use of GEE and making Etheridge's navigation role all the more difficult, while on the 9th-10th eight of 107s aircraft destroyed a brace of ammunition trains between Metz and Morhange, taking it in turns to carry out devastating cannon and machine-gun attacks. A successful sortie to Holland followed on the night of the 11th-12th, a less successful one on the 13th-14th, while on the 17th Etheridge and Gasson, piloti...

Lovely manual gearbox C2 from 26-years ownership in fabulous condition and benefitting from an exceptional service history. The 993 was the final generation of the air-cooled 911, and as such will always have a special place in the affections of Porsche enthusiasts. It's also widely said to be the last of the 911s that were built whilst engineering integrity overruled accounting pressures at Porsche. 20 years on, it still looks modern - a truly timeless design. It was introduced in the autumn of 1994 and was claimed to be 80% new with more curvaceous bodywork and a number of new panels creating a much smoother and more integrated look, however, importantly, this new style was still every inch a 911 in the traditional manner, with the profiles of the doors and rear quarter windows remaining unchanged from earlier models. The biggest change under the skin of the new 911 - the 933 -  was the new multi-link rear suspension, giving greater driver confidence, less road noise and excellent ride quality. Designed to give a level of passive rear-wheel steering (the 'Weissach effect'), thus controlling the way the suspension behaved under cornering, braking and acceleration, it transformed the 911. It was also the first 911 to be equipped with power steering and an advanced ABS system. Utilising the same 3.6-litre engine as the 964, mated to a development of the worthy G50 gearbox, but now with six forward gears or the smooth Tiptronic automatic gearbox, the 993 from 1995 produced 272bhp enabling a top speed of over 150mph and acceleration to match.Silverstone Auctions are proud to offer this beautiful Carrera 2 that has a service record which is second to none with 19 stamps in the book with Official Porsche Dealers Reading (AFN) and Swindon. The story begins, however, when our vendor purchased the Porsche in July 1997 from Porsche Zentrum in Dusseldorf whilst working in Germany. A few months later, in September 1997, he returned to the UK bringing the Porsche with him consequently ensuring a continuity of maintenance that’s truly impressive over his 26 years of ownership.Finished in Polar Silver Metallic, it's fitted with the optional premium softer black leather interior which has been treated twice annually since 1997 and still looks perfect today. Factory-fitted options included 'Sports' suspension (10mm lower and slightly stiffer), automatic air-conditioning, electric heated and adjustable seats, a limited-slip differential, power steering, a Blaupunkt radio and CD player, onboard computer and 17’’ cup-design alloy wheels. For UK driving, it has twin rear fog lights and adjustable dipped beam.Part of the 911's perennial appeal is the purity of line of the early cars, often compromised by the later addition of protrusions, however, devoid of a sunroof, rear wash wipe and high-level brake light, the top line of this 993 is wind-tunnel perfect. The car's overall condition is exceptional and testament to our owners care and attention. There are a couple of very minor blemishes, commensurate with its 74,983 miles (120,572km) and it still rides on OE-fit Bridgestone Potenzas. The carpets have always had over mats and the interior is immaculate. The original speedometer (supplied with the car) was replaced with a newly manufactured Porsche unit in August 2021 with the mileage showing 115,304km and the new unit now reads 5,268km. It comes with its original Porsche box and the change is documented in the service record. In June 2022, the car toured Europe in a convoy of fellow Porsche enthusiasts and behaved perfectly, covering 2,200 trouble-free miles in two weeks. Subsequently, in August 2022, it was issued with a fresh MOT Certificate indicating 'no advisories'. Garaged and cosseted all of its life, this is a super example of the last of the air cooled 911s in exactly the specification you would want and, short of going back onto its German plate, it's about as original as you could hope to find.SpecificationMake: PORSCHEModel: 911 (993)Year: 1995Chassis Number: WP0ZZZ99ZSS314488Registration Number: M278 UDPTransmission: ManualEngine Number: M6405-635 Drive Side: Left-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 121000 KMMake: LHDClick here for more details and images

1961 Ducati 250cc Mach 1 Racing MotorcycleFrame no. DM250*81617Engine no. B74 X S 57.8•Neil Brailsford's first racing motorcycle•Engine extensively modified•Paraded at CRMC eventsNeil Brailsford first built this Ducati in 1967 using a 1961 Mach 1 engine and frame, and raced it in Bemsee, KRC, Newmarket and 'Lord of Lydden' events from 1967 to 1976. Sold in '76, the bike went into the private collection of Bill Rose of Bemsee. The Ducati stayed there unused for many years and was eventually sold in 2008 and started racing again in Classic events. In 2018 Neil was able to buy back what was his original race bike. Jerry Fiford (former many-time Bemsee Champion) had owned and ridden the Ducati for many years and its thanks to him that Neil was able to buy it back again. The machine has not been rebuilt, but rather it is just how Neil raced it in 1967 with the exception of the high-level exhaust to meet modern noise regulations. The Ducati Mach 1 engine was modified from the old hairpin-type valve springs to coil springs. The inlet tract has been bored to accept the new 32mm Amal Concentric Mark 1 carburettor, now rubber mounted. Twin-plug ignition has been fitted also. 1983 Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk. I Transmission: manualMileage:200044Launched in 1974, the Golf represented a complete break with Volkswagen tradition, yet it would prove as big a sales success as its Beetle predecessor. In GTi form the Golf has become one of the great icons of modern motoring, giving rise to an entirely new class of sporting saloon - the 'hot hatch' - in the process. First seen at the Frankfurt Show in September 1975, the GTi came with a 1.6 litre, fuel-injected, 110bhp engine which, in a car weighing a mere 846 kilos (1,861lbs) resulted in a performance package of a type not seen since the demise of the Mini Cooper 1275 S. Increasing competition from rival manufacturers prompted the introduction of a 1.8 litre GTi in 1982, and although maximum power increased only slightly to 114bhp there was a considerable improvement in mid-range acceleration.First registered on 12th April 1983, this lovely example of the original hot hatch has led a pampered life over the past few years that belie its mileage. Having only had three former keepers and forming part of two large collections in recent years, with low ownership it has had light use and always been dry stored indoors. The Lhasa Green paintwork presents well, and the interior is in remarkably good condition for a car of this age and mileage. Retaining its original 13€ nine slot alloy wheels, the car looks as it should. The supplied history file shows a history of good maintenance with 19 stamps shown in its original Volkswagen service book and a further three with well reputed Wagon Wheels as well as many other receipts and MoT test certificates. Now only for sale to make room for a new acquisition, the vendor reports the car to run and drive very well with its 1800cc engine revving away as freely as you would hope.Supplied with a V5C registration document, book pack, service book, MoT test certificates and other receipts. This entry level classic is ready to provide maximum bang for your buck thrills as well as holding its own at any classic car event.

1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Transmission: automaticMileage:65513The stylish Mercedes-Benz W113 was presented at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show and replaced both the expensive 300 SL and entry-level 190 SL with one medium-priced two-seat sports car. The SL was a huge success, with 48,912 sold in nine years, and is now considered a true masterpiece. The body combines the elegantly trim look of contemporary Mercedes saloons with a simple grille derived from the 300 SL. Béla Barényi conceived the patented concave hardtop, soon called the 'Pagoda.' Like the best designs, the W113 has proven to be timeless in its appeal. We are pleased to offer this superb low mileage, two owner from new example which is an original and rare 'California Coupé', with the single bench seat as designated by option '417' on its factory record.Originally purchased in July 1969 by its first owner, a Mr. Luigi Bresciani an Italian ice cream manufacturer who ordered the Mercedes as a retirement present to himself. Interestingly Mr. Besciani ordered the Pagoda in U.K. right hand drive specification but had it delivered to his Italian residence. Later in 1972 he returned to England to join his family bringing the Pagoda with him. The Pagoda remained his pride and joy until 1982 when at the age of 80 he found his health failing and with great reluctance arranged for the car to be sold. At this stage, the car had covered some 51,000 miles. Our vendor acquired the vehicle at this time and carried out various maintenance work to ensure the car was ready for further use. The Mercedes was enjoyed for a further 8,000 miles and was taken around the country as well as on the continent.Offered from over four decades of single ownership, this superb example has covered a mere 65,513 miles and has had just two owners from new. Accompanying the Pagoda is a sizeable history file with many documents, sundry bills, service records, MoT test certificates, and even the March 1983, edition of Classic and Sports which the car featured in!Having been dry stored since the current vendors purchase in 1982, this Mercedes was last MoT'd in the early 2000's and has been used sparingly since. Presented in very good, preserved condition the paintwork retains a deep shine and shows little sign of age as does the interior and chrome work. The vendor reports that the car was working as it should when it was parked up in the garage some years ago, however it has not been started in recent times and as such some general recommissioning is required before use. Having covered little mileage from new and with a superb two owner history this example represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire an ever-desirable right hand drive 280 SL Pagoda. We expect this wonderful example to be keenly contested at auction.

1965 Triumph TR4A IRS (Surrey Top) Transmission: manualMileage:146405Produced between 1961 and 1967, the Triumph TR4 combined a new, modern, and aggressive body design by famed Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti, with the basic chassis of the previous TR3A. The TR4 also improved passenger comfort with wind-up windows, face-level ventilation, and an optional hardtop. When equipped with the optional overdrive, the TR4 was good for a top speed of almost 110mph. Following on from the TR4, the new TR4A was phased in smoothly at the beginning of 1965 and introduced an all-new independent rear suspension system (IRS), which provided exceptional rear wheel camber control with excellent wheel travel while softer springs improved the ride quality. The press were happy to see an all-independent car, and Triumph were pleased to be the first British car manufacturer to have all-independent suspensions under every car in their line-up. At the Sebring 12 Hours in 1966, ample proof of the validity of the IRS was provided when three IRS equipped TR4As achieved a remarkable 1-2-3 class victory. This 1965 Triumph TR4A IRS with the 'Surrey Top' was purchased by the current owner's husband in October 1991, he acquired it from the previous owner who brought it in 1977. In the 1980's the car was stripped and repainted in the original colour of Azure Blue. Since 1991, the car has been fully maintained, including in 1992 when it was fitted with a modified cylinder head. In 2018, this TR4A was sent to marque specialists Rees Brothers, Aldershot for a major overhaul which cost in the region of £20,000. Fitted with a black interior, this Triumph TR4A IRS is supplied with a V5C registration document, the original owner's handbook and a file containing old V5 registration documents, old MoT test certificates, invoices and photographs from the 2018 overhaul and older invoices going back to 1991. This is a good, useable example with the rare 'Surrey Top' that requires cosmetic restoration to the bodywork to bring it back to show standard.

(1322017) (11) (†)Gilt automat “Türmchenuhr” with strike on bell, alarm and moving figures with hunting themeHeight: 44 cm.Base width: 27 cm.Depth: 23 cm.Probably Augsburg, ca. 1630.Fire-gilt bronze, iron, steel, silver, and silver plating. The structure is tower-shaped, as are several famous Augsburg examples, on an ebonized base and a further gilt-base decorated with floral reliefs surmounted by a rectangular tower. The corners are decorated with pilasters with volute capitals and tall bases with prominent diamond rustication. The top-most part tapers upwards and is divided into three parts: it starts with an openwork cornice revealing two bells on the inside. There are four pyramid-shaped attachments at the corners, with balusters in between that surround the round, two-tiered top part. The first level reveals cast silver figurines in the openings that circle when the clock chimes: a deer pursued by an archer accompanied by dogs. Next to it on either side are two small dogs, which rise at the chime of the bell. The upper part is shaped like a round pavilion with a revolving human figure with deer antlers inside. This is Actaeon, the mythical hunter who was transformed into a stag by the hunting goddess Diana. The arched, openwork calotte at the top of the dome is surmounted by a three-dimensional gilt-figure of the god Hermes with winged petasos hat and winged shoes. All four sides of the tower housing are decorated with fine engravings with c-shaped arches, leaf volutes and flowers and set with round dials or function displays: On the front the primary dial with a framed numeral ring, silvered (dark patina) as a 24-hour chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and 5-minute interval display. Alarm dial, labelled in Latin for sunrise, noon, and sunset. The three hands are blued.Subdials on the sides show the last struck quarter hours and hours. On the reverse another 24-hour chapter ring, also enclosing a gilt volvelle, showing the phases of the moon, further with a diagram of the Ptolemaic planetary aspects; the alarm dial with 24-hour indication and Latin terms for sunrise, noon, sunset and night. Spindle movement in iron and cut iron, spring mechanisms in polished steel. Spring winding by key. The side walls can be removed, allowing access to the movement and the springs. The hourly striking mechanism is connected to the hunting figures of the top part, which circle to the right. The quarter beat is also connected to the two dogs sitting outside the pavilion, who rise up and back down on each strike. This sophisticated mechanism presents a lively spectacle, corresponding to a figural carillon. The Augsburg clockmaker Matthias Greylach created an example that is very similar to the present clock, at least in terms of the clock's structure. Chéri Samba (Congolese, born 1956)Je suis un Rebelle, 1999 signed and dated 'Chéri Samba/1999' (lower right)acrylic and glitter on canvas 114 x 145cm (44 7/8 x 57 1/16in).(unframed)Footnotes:ProvenanceAcquired from the artist by the current owner, 2007;A private collection. The writing to the lower left translates to:I am a rebel It's curious to see that most humans' hearths are on the left side. May be they are weak or corrupted. Few people' hearths are on the right side. May be they are messiah. Mine is nor on the right, not on the left, even not centered. I am a rebel. Remember Turkia, Chili, Rwanda in 1994... ?Resonating artists oeuvre, the current work displays the exorbitant and critical qualities that are the defining elements of Cheri Sambas work. Motivated to depict the socio-political issues faced in his home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo from the 1980's, Samba often presents self portraits such as this one, contextualising himself in his position of his societal constraints. Having begun his career in illustrating advertisements Mbuta-Masunda Studio, before setting up his own artist's studio, graphic text would continue to play a significant role to the artist's work as a display of social and political narratives. This motif would contribute to his defining style that would be coined as Zairian Popular Paining. The purpose of text and speech bubbles within his work was to enable a level of accessibility for the viewer, heightening their sense of relatability. 'I had noticed that people in the street would walk by paintings, glance at them and keep going. I thought that if I added a bit of text, people would have to stop and take time to read it, to get more into the painting and admire it. That's what I called the 'Samba signature'.' (Cheri Samba)In regards to the present lot, Je suis un Rebelle, Cheri Samba remarked that he 'wanted to remind people that so far nothing has changed. You still have the dominated and the dominant. We pretend to fight terrorism, but it's still there. Rebels are traitors who manipulate and harm people. It is basically a power struggle and I'm not only talking about Congo. I had a problem once, because of a painting where somebody thought I had portrayed them. So they hassled me. Although I am not the type of rebel I just described, I chose to use myself as a model to avoid running the same risk again.'BibliographyA. An unusual Second War A.F.C. group of six awarded to Flight Lieutenant The Reverend Canon C. E. Young, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, late Army Service Corps and Royal Flying Corps, who flew operationally in R.E. 8s and Bristol Fighters of No. 9 Squadron in the Great War: Headmaster of Rossall School by the renewal of hostilities, he quickly returned to uniform and ‘despite his age’, was decorated for his fine work as a Flying Instructor Air Force Cross, G.VI.R., reverse officially dated ‘1943’, with Royal Mint case of issue; 1914-15 Star (2 Lieut. C. E. Young, A.S.C.); British War and Victory Medals (Lieut. C. E. Young, R.A.F.); Defence and War Medals 1939-45, mounted for display in a fine-quality glazed display frame, generally very fine and better (6) £3,000-£4,000 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, June 2012. A.F.C. London Gazette 1 January 1943. The original recommendation states: ‘This officer was Headmaster of Rossall School and, in response to a call for experienced personnel, volunteered for flying instructor duties in July 1940, being commissioned on 5 July 1940. He performed his duties with great efficiency but in July 1942, at the request of the Board of Directors of the School, he resigned his commission to return to his headmastership. At the same time he volunteered to give his services in any capacity during the August vacation. Flying Officer Young, despite his age, has an exceptional record of devoted service with a high number of flying hours and has at all times been a source of inspiration to the instructors and pupils alike.’ The Reverend Canon Charles Edgar Young was born in Bristol in 1897, the son of a Professor of Chemistry, and was educated at Castle Park Prep School, Dublin, and Charterhouse. Commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps shortly after the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he went out to France in the following year, but subsequently transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and qualified for his aviator’s certificate (No. 4809) in June 1917. Posted to No. 9 Squadron that August, he flew numerous bombing, photographic and artillery-spotting sorties throughout the Third battle of Ypres, and beyond, as well as carrying out low-level strafing of enemy troops and trenches. This was the most costly period of No. 9’s operational career: in August alone, 24 aircrew were lost to enemy action, among them one of Young’s early Observers, Second Lieutenant F. J. A. Wodehouse; indeed Squadron records reveal frequent interception by enemy aircraft, Young driving off one enemy aircraft at 6,000 feet over Pilckem on 11 September 1917, and a large two-seater during an artillery observation patrol on 25 January 1918. But he came through unscathed and ended the War as a flying instructor back in the U.K. Having then attended Exeter College, Oxford, Young taught Classics at Fettes School up until 1929, when he was appointed Headmaster of Lincoln School and, after fulfilling that role with great success, he was invited to take over the helm at Rossall. Here, as made clear by accompanying obituaries, he was responsible for saving the school from closure in the wake of the depression in the 1930s and, with the exception of his wartime exploits as a flying instructor, remained in charge for 20 years. In the interim, Young had been ordained and on retiring from Rossall he became vicar of Thornthwaite-with-Braithwaite in the Lakelands. He died in 1977. Sold with a large quantity of research, including a photocopy of the recipient’s Flying Log Book for the period May to August 1917, the original of which forms part of the Imperial War Museum’ s collection; and various photographic images of the recipient.

AN ARCHAIC YELLOW & RUSSET JADE DRAGON PENDANT, EASTERN ZHOU DYNASTYOpinion: The quality of this example is perhaps most visible when images of the right and left sides are viewed simultaneously, because only then it becomes apparent how much care was given by the craftsman to ensure that the spiral c-scroll clouds were laid out in an identical fashion. The quality is further personified by the rare color of the jade and the magnificent polish.China, 6th-4th century BC. Carved in the form of a sinuous dragon, with head turned looking back, the s-shaped body with spirals carved in relief. The translucent stone of a fine yellow tone with russet shadings at the edges.Provenance: Collection of Pierre Lallier. Pierre Lallier (1946-2021) was a master printer, having run the famous Atelier Georges Leblanc since 1968. He was also a passionate scholar and committed private collector, spending nearly half a century of his life building his private collection. He started at the age of 12, perusing the Parisian flea markets with his father, extensively researching every piece of interest, while also confirming its dating and provenance. He loved his objects, cherished them, and never wanted to part with them.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few minuscule nicks, some of which have smoothened over time. Natural inclusions and fissures.Weight: 21.9 gDimensions: Length 8 cmJade, known as the 'Stone of Heaven', represents wisdom, beauty, courage, and perfection. This combined with the powerful iconography of the dragon, creates a strong symbol of luck and good fortune. Jades in this form have a long tradition of being used as ritualistic objects, in particular tokens of rank and symbolic aids for the celestial journey thought to be undertaken by the dead. In the Zhou dynasty, the number of ritualistic jades increased significantly in burial sites, as multiple plaques, pendants, and beads were draped over the face and body of the deceased.Literature comparison: Refer to Michael Gulbenkian's article Archaic Jades, Arts of Asia, May-June 1983, where the carved c-scroll cloud motif is used as a methodology to date archaic jades.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2017, lot 2719Price: HKD 1,860,000 or approx. Particular attention should be paid to the depiction of the lower jaw and snout of the dragon as they are executed in the same manner. While the primary color of the stone is of a different hue, the Christie's pendant also has an attractive russet tinge around the outer edges, possibly signifying that both these 'pendants' were carved from pebbles just slightly larger than their finished size.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 2 December 2021, lot 2702Price: HKD 687,500 or approx. EUR 82,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing.Description: A group of three jade dragon form pendants, late Spring and Autumn period, circa 570-476 BCExpert remark: The first pendant in the lot is part of a closely related group of archaic jades that includes our pendant. While the color of the chosen stone is just as attractive, there is a clear demarcation between the two pieces. Christie's carving is clearly a work of art, but it is not accompanied by the same level of quality or beauty as our pendant. It is also worth noting the placement and number of suspension apertures on each of the three Christie's pendants. Looking at the multiple examples simultaneously shows that these are later-added features, as they are either off-center or through part of the carved design, and so these features should not be taken into account when assessing such 'pendants' as this was not their original function.

Pair of frames Carlos III; XVIII century.Carved and gilded wood. The gilding has some leaps in the gilding.Provenance: private collection conceived from the 70's between London and Madrid.Measurements: 18 x 13 x 2 cm (x2).It should be noted that in 18th century Spain there was a great evolution, from an ordinary piece of furniture around 1700, within a very conservative panorama, to a splendid piece of furniture, of great quality and artistic personality, at the end of the century. The change came with Charles III (queen between 1759 and 1788), when he was faced with the need to furnish the new palace. At that time, the level of demand and quality of the furnishings increased considerably. This led to an extraordinary improvement in the second half of the 18th century. Charles III saw the last stage of Rococo furniture, a type of furniture which, unlike in the rest of Europe, took Italy rather than France as its point of reference.

1994 Bentley Continental R Transmission: automaticMileage:24500Since 1921, the Bentley name has remained synonymous with prestige, performance and luxury. The 'Continental' designation recalls the Bentley Continental of the post-war period. The 'R' resonates to the R-Type Bentleys from the 1950s as well as the Turbo R of the 1980s. Bentley's 1980s resurgence relied exclusively on models whose basic architecture was shared with other Rolls-Royce models however; the Bentley Continental R was unique to the Bentley marque. Despite the need to incorporate non-traditional features such as doors recessed into the roof, the result looked every bit a Bentley, albeit one restated for the 1990s. Needless to say, the performance was outstanding, the combination of the Turbo R engine in the new wind-cheating shape cutting the 0-60mph time to under six seconds and boosting a top speed in excess of 150mph.This regal Bentley example is offered in Mica Red with Sandstone leather and the cockpit of this Continental R is an area of beauty with walnut wood and gauges featuring highly. Boasting just five owners from new, the first two were brothers and the car was reportedly driven mostly by a family chauffer. The previous owner bought this exquisite example in 2006 and described the car as part of the family and the present owner has kept it in dry store and cherished it, only using it sparingly. Originally registered on 23rd March 1994, this Continental R has been cared for by Bentley and Rolls-Royce specialists, the comprehensively stamped service booklet shows a very good level of maintenance performed by all previous keepers, this is combined with every MoT test certificate which can be accounted for. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a current MoT test certificate valid until November 2023 together with a comprehensive service history including 20 service stamps which is practically a service being carried out every 1,000 miles! These Bentley’s are magnificent vehicles to drive and this example offers outstanding value for such a low mileage example in wonderful condition.

1965 Amphicar 770 Transmission: manualMileage:14620The Amphicar is an amphibious vehicle, designed by Hans Trippel and manufactured by the Quandt Group in Lübeck and Berlin-Borsigwalde. The Amphicar was designed to be marketed and sold in the USA; compared to most boats or cars, its performance was modest, resulting in less than 4,000 being produced between 1961 and 1968. Nevertheless, it is still among the most successful amphibious civilian vehicles of all time and is still often prized and preserved as a novelty collectible automobile today. From the front the appearance of the under-surface is slightly pointed and sharply cut away; the wheels are set low, ensuring that the vehicle stands well above ground level when on dry land. Front and rear bumpers are placed low on the body panels and the water propulsion is provided by twin propellers mounted under the rear bumper. Power was supplied by the 1147cc engine from the Triumph Herald; the Amphicar engine had a power output of 43hp. Referred to as the ‘Model 770’, the Amphicar could achieve speeds of seven knots in the water and 70mph on land. This left hand drive example was made for the European market and has been retained in a private collection for over 20 years. Believed to be one of only eight Amphicars in the UK, it was restored a number of years ago and is finished in Eau-De-Nil with a white vinyl roof and black interior. We are advised by the vendor that this Amphicar 770 should arrive at auction with a new battery and in running order, however it will require further restoration especially to the rear of the car where a few leaks have been detected. It was used to tow the under-16 Namibian Ski Champion as part of a publicity campaign 10 years ago. The vehicle was first registered on 11th January 1965 and is supplied with the original buff logbook, together with some previous MoT test certificates (the last one expired in 2004) and some interesting newspaper articles featuring LMV 7C. These immensely entertaining car/boats are hard to find and generate huge interest on land or water. One Amphicar owner was quoted saying ‘We like to think of it as the fastest car on the water and the fastest boat on the road.’ The ideal viewing platform for next year’s Henley Regatta!

Standard MkII 998cc Austin Cooper prepared in the 1980s for club rallying. From long-term ownership and no longer active but would make a great sprint/hill climb/fun road car.Making its debut in 1961, the giant-slaying Mini Cooper went on to become one of the most successful competition cars of all time, literally running rings around far bigger and more potent opponents as a result of its incredible handling. The original 997cc long-stroke engine was supplanted in 1964 with the 998cc unit offering 55bhp and the twin SUs and close-ratio gearbox made for a very successful formula. A major revamp occurred in 1967 with the introduction of the MkII with a larger rear window and a different grille amongst a raft of other changes. Some 16,000 MKII Coopers were sold before production came to an end in 1969 and survivors are increasingly prized by collectors.Built on the 3rd of July 1968, JDR 612F was originally a standard 998cc Austin Cooper MkII finished in white with a black roof. At some point in its early life, one of its owners had decided that the call of motorsport could not be ignored and JDR was prepared for its next role as a rally car.We are not sure whether it was gradually developed over a period of time or was prepared initially as an homage to the mid-1960s ‘Works’ cars but it certainly looks the part now. Traditionally finished in Tartan Red with an Old English White roof, the little car sits well on chunky 10” Minilites popping out from black extended arches and sports a heavy duty sump-guard, Cooper’S’ twin tanks with quick-fillers, a quartet of Lucas spot/fog lights, a roof-mounted hand-operated spotlight, bonnet and boot straps and much more. There are some cheeky Cooper S badges on the boot and bonnet but, sadly, it’s not a 1275.Apart from the full roll-cage, a new dashboard panel and a hand-held extinguisher, the interior is basically standard and equipped with the normal working tools of a navigators life, internal fuses, map reading light, multiple stop watches and a Halda Twinmaster. It was owned and rallied by navigator, Nigel Chetwynd, and driven by his friend, Peter Barker, during the late 80s and early 90s with much success including an outright win in the Cumbria Classic in 1990 and second in class on the Solway Rally (There will be some press cuttings from that period with the car).JDR has been owned since 2005 by a father and daughter and is on offer from their private Mini Collection. We understand that it's been well-maintained during their ownership and has been out from time to time on road rallies and regularity runs. Our vendor has fitted rear lights and a rear screen from a Mk I Cooper further enhancing its ‘factory’ look. The car has a very strong shell and drives extremely well and, as an entry-level rally car represents great value for money, although the currency of the safety equipment (cage, belts, extinguisher etc.) would have to be established.Or perhaps just use it for fun days out, regularity events or the odd club sprint. Versatile little Cooper with a really great ‘look’.    SpecificationMake: AUSTINModel: MINI MKIIYear: 1968Chassis Number: CA2SB1150782ARegistration Number: JDR 612FTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 9FDSAH35094Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 15648 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images

A perfect entry-level racer, built to extremely high standards without ever turning a wheel in anger and offered at No Reserve.First released in 1982, with the final car running off the production line in 1994, the BMW E30’s shape has aged undeniably well, with a seemingly universal appreciation of the design. As a race car the E30 in M3 guise has seen countless victories across the board in BTCC, DTM and rallying. With M3 prices soaring in recent years to over £50,000, with exceptional examples selling in excess of £100,000 for both race cars and their road-going counterparts, it seems more and more sensible to build a non-M3 variant into a track focussed car, to be owned, enjoyed and driven for a mere fraction of the cost of its glamorous sibling.Whilst some race cars are built on a shoestring, this 1989 320i sits on the other end of the spectrum and has been subject to a fabulous, no expense spared, ground-up build by Graves Motorsport. The cars wholesome beginnings stem from our vendor wanting something to race with his son, and for it to be ‘the best car on the grid’, and the E30 was the chosen candidate. The car was to be built to the specific regulations of the intended 2019 BMW Production Cup Championship, and logic dictated taking the car to Graves Motorsport as they have a great track record with overall wins in both this championship and others. However, upon the cars completion, COVID hit, and even though it was ready to race, circumstances had changed and it unfortunately never turned a wheel in anger on track and has simply seen a few shakedown miles on public roads.Originally a non-sunroof, 318i coupé, the car benefits from an engine upgrade to the 2-litre M20B20 with all belts and hoses changed upon installation, along with an uprated radiator. It's equipped with Gaz coil-over suspension, a Z3 short-shifter, Miltek exhaust system, poly-bushed suspension, Toyo Triple Eights all-round, welded-in cage, a Motordrive bucket seat and a plumbed-in fire extinguisher.Eligible for the Kumho BMW Championship and 750 Motor Club races amongst others, it would be great to see this E30 raced competitively or enjoyed as the perfect fast road/track day toy that you could happily drive to and from any circuit in full confidence. With the build cost in excess of £30,000, and offered at No Reserve, this fabulous looking E30 is ready and raring to go.SpecificationMake: BMWModel: E30 320I RACE CARYear: 1990Chassis Number: WBAAB22030EE55564Registration Number: H324 MEFTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 22384902Drive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: WhiteClick here for more details and images

**Please note the car is not currently UK Registered, however a backdated NOVA has been applied for and is in progress with the information on its 2015/16 import to the UK, no taxes are due to be paid by the buyer.**A masterpiece of an homologation special, this is one of 20 built to 350bhp S specification, featuring improved air flow and an exceptionally rare ‘Rally Spec’ transmission and has covered just 1,932km (1,200 miles) from new. Ask any rally fan to name their favourite era and chances are that the wild Group B years will be at the top of most people’s list. It was a time of uncompromising and completely unhinged machinery, with designers and engineers really pushing the envelope when it came to interpreting the rules and endowing these four-wheel-drive turbocharged monsters with the maximum possible performance. Perhaps the wildest of them all was Ford’s RS200 and where the Audi Quattro, Peugeot 205 T16 and even the Lancia Delta S4 were very obviously derived from their more mundane production cousins, Ford took a different route, designing and building a Group B car that looked – and drove – like no other Ford before or since.Ford had, of course, been part of the rallying furniture ever since the rear-drive Escort made its debut, but as the WRC entered the Group B era, it found itself without a machine to compete at this level. Unusually for Ford, the solution proved elusive and, with the Escort RS1700T failing miserably, they were forced to return to the drawing board and start all over again. The result was the RS200. Produced by Ford Motorsport in Boreham from 1984-1986, the plastic-fibreglass composite body was designed by Filippo Sapino of Ghia Design Studio and, unusually, the bodywork for the majority of cars was entrusted to Reliant of Shenstone, a company who knew a fair bit about building fibreglass cars. The chassis engineering was looked after by F1 gurus, Tony Southgate and John Wheeler. Naturally, four-wheel-drive was essential, and it was built around a space-frame chassis, Kevlar bodywork, and a potent mid-mounted engine courtesy of well-proven race engine builder, Brian Hart. Add to this an innovative front-mounted gearbox for better weight distribution and balance, plus a variable torque-split differential from Ferguson, and you have a serious rally car. The RS200’s mid-mounted engine was a development of the RS1700T, but capacity was increased to 1,803cc with a bore and stroke of 86.0 and 77.62mm respectively. It featured Ford/Bosch injection and, with an 8.2:1 compression ratio allied with a Garrett turbocharger in road-going trim, it developed 246bhp at 6,500-7,000rpm and a maximum torque output of 215lb/ft at 4,000-5,000rpm. The rally cars had significantly more to play with – 444bhp at a screaming 8,000rpm and 361lb/ft at 5,500rpm.Ford had now become ‘late starters' and were effectively three years behind, but it finally looked like they had a winning package after Kalle Grundell came home third in the Swedish Rally of 1986. However, the fickle finger of fate was soon to be pointed at Group B and, after a series of tragedies with both drivers and spectators being killed, it became obvious that 600bhp, lightweight rally cars being threaded at three-figure speeds through banks of standing spectators was not the way forward, and the decision was taken by the FIA to pull the plug on Group B at the end of the 1986 season. As a result, after just one year in competition, it was all over for the RS200 so it never got to show off its full potential, however, despite being pushed off the WRC stage, the RS200 was hugely competitive and experienced great success elsewhere in the hands of Stig Blomqvist, Malcolm Wilson, Mark Rennison and Mark Lovell, who clinched the British Rally Championship with his RS200 and more success in Rallycross, taking victories across Europe and winning back-to-back championships in the British Rallycross Championship in 1987 and 1988 with Mark Rennison.FIA Homologation Rules for Group B required the construction of at least 200 road-legal vehicles, however, the demise of Group B meant that only 144 were completed. Of these, 20 were sold to Canadian Murray DeWert who's plan was to develop them further and create "the best RS200s ever". Subsequently known as the RS200 S they were fitted with several upgrades including electric windows, a more comfortable Tickford interior, improved air flow and ducting, air intakes - often referred to as ‘ears’- above the doors at the back of the roof as per the competition cars and, importantly, an increase in power from 250bhp to 350bhp. Make no mistake, the RS200 S was blisteringly fast, with 0-60 taking just 3.8s.Believed to have been the 16th RS200 S, this example is #164 and was first delivered to West German dealer, Stefan Schollwoek in left-hand drive with a rally specification dog-clutch selector, which allows the driver to control the four-wheel-drive torque split with a secondary gearstick. Schollwoek purchased four examples of the RS200 S,  #111, #137, #153 and #164, the latter being sold to a German collector who registered it in Germany under a company named ‘Primrose’. We understand from the Ferrari-trained mechanic employed to look after the cars, Giovanni Petrozziello, that #164 had entered the collection in the early 1990s. Our vendor purchased the car to add to their outstanding collection in 2015, but never registered it here in the UK. However, the vendor has always ensured it was kept in good running and driving order. The history file is fairly bare, as is to be expected of a car that has only covered 1,932km since new, but it does include a copy of the German registration document, a brief summary and photographs of the car prior to our vendor's purchase, and original additional support pads for the seats. It's presented in remarkably original and very good condition throughout and retains the correct grey trim with red Recaro sports seats and matching red leather steering wheel. As one of only 20 of these bespoke S models and with just 1,200 gentle miles covered in the last 35 years, #164 would certainly occupy pride of place in any exclusive collection of RS Fords and, should its next owner choose to use the car on the road, they would enjoy a seriously quick, totally competent, lightweight sports car that appears relatively civilised, however, underneath that gleaming Diamond White paintwork, its DNA is undoubtedly pure 'Group B'.  SpecificationMake: FORDModel: RS200 SYear: 1986Chassis Number: SFACXXBJ2CGL00164Registration Number: TBCTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Left-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 1932 KMMake: LHDInterior Colour: Grey/RedClick here for more details and images

Presenting in exceptional condition, this Tommykaira R-S is a unicorn of the JDM world and one of just 35 Tommykaira R34s ever produced. Generating some 435bhp from the uprated RB26 DETT, this car is a fabulous look-back at the pinnacle of Japanese tuning houses in their prime. The car culture in Japan is globally renowned for its passion for modification, enthusiasm for all cars, and unbridled ability to push the boat out. Throughout the 1990s, the tuner culture truly exploded in the Japanese car world with, now infamous, garages, workshops and brands popping up and growing notoriety such as Smokey Nagata’s ‘Top Secret’, Akira Nakai’s ‘RWB’, and brands/factions such as Nismo, Blitz, HKS and others. One of these brands was Tommykaira.Originally founded in 1986 as Tomita Yume Koujou, Tommykaira is a Japanese car tuning and manufacturing company headquartered in Minami-ku, Kyoto and named after its two founders, Yoshikazu Tomita and Kikuo Kaira. Several of its cars have appeared in both the Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport racing simulation video game series which boosted their popularity and awareness of the brand.Tommykaira tuned, modified and then re-branded cars as if they were manufactured by the company itself, with the permission of the parent manufacturers, much like the German counterparts of Ruf and Gemballa do with Porsches. A Subaru Impreza was re-branded as Tommykaira M20b, a Nissan 350Z as a Tommykaira Z, and the most notorious JDM car of all, the Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R was offered in three guises, the Tommykaira R, R-S or RZ featuring different levels of aggression, styling and power, the R being entry level, the R-S the mid-range, most balanced option and the RZ the most aggressive. The R34 GT-R's popularity was rocketed by an appearance in "The Fast and the Furious" franchise that led to an explosion in global popularity for the R34 GT-R. Indeed, the late Paul Walker drove an R34 GT-R in '2 Fast 2 Furious', enhancing its almost cult status. But it was in the 'real' world where the R34 GT-R V-Spec would cement its reputation. Described by Evo Magazine as "A warrior-class performer" in its 2007 road test, where a standard R34 GT-R was pitted against the likes of a McLaren F1, Pagani Zonda, Ferrari F40 and Bugatti Veyron, the GT-R's reputation as a class-act remained intact. The R33 GT-R was a good car, but many found it to be too bulky in design and too heavy to be a worthy successor to the R32 GT-R, which the R34 sought to rectify, and did so with flying colours. Released with a shorter, sharper design and the performance to match, it’s safe to say the bite truly matches the bark. For a car released in 1999, the R34 came crammed full of technology including a 5.8" LCD multifunction display in the dashboard, showing seven different live readings of engine and vehicle statistics such as boost pressure, oil/water temperature and throttle percentage amongst others. It arrived with aggressive new styling, a stiffer bodyshell and a reworked version of the bulletproof and highly modifiable RB26DETT twin-turbo, inline-six mated to an all-new Getrag 6-speed gearbox and transfer case. The electronically controlled Super HICAS rear-wheel steering system was retained. Unlike some other performance cars of the 1990s, Nissan did not neglect the braking system and fitted Brembo brakes with 300mm vented discs, although Tommykaira did upgrade these further to match the power increase. The example offered here is a V-Spec JDM-delivered car and is one of just 522 produced in GV1, Pearl Black, out of a production run of 11,578 cars. Importantly, this was one of the very select cars that Tommykaira got their hands on. Tommykaira built three variations of the R34, the entry level R with 375bhp, the R-S with 435bhp and a host of mechanical upgrades and the hardcore RZ with over 500bhp. Tommykaira upgrades were both mechanical and cosmetic with a view to improving and refining the already outstanding R34 GTR, seeking to make it faster, better to drive and overall improved on both road and track without compromising comfort. On the mechanical side, we have Nissan’s legendary 2.6-litre twin-turbo engine now producing 435bhp thanks to its N1 Turbos, Tommykaira remapped ECU, stainless-steel Tommykaira exhaust system, uprated radiator, oil cooler, intercooler, turbine kit and air filters. The driving experience is enhanced with uprated Bilstein gas-filled shock absorbers, 25mm lowering springs, upgraded front tension rods, a strut-brace and a twin-plate cutch. Cosmetically, the R-S model features an exclusive mesh grille, front bumper, front spoiler, side skirts, rear bumper, rear valance and diffusers, as well as an adjustable alloy GT wing and more Tommykaira emblems than you can shake a stick at. Step foot near this car and you’ll have no doubt who built it and why.It rides on its original lightweight, and recently refurbished (costing £460 from Platinum Alloys), 19-inch, six-spoke Tommykaira ‘Pro R’ magnesium wheels finished in gold and wrapped in Bridgestone Potenzas all-round, with massive AP Racing six-piston callipers and discs on the front with two-piston callipers on the back, meaning this JDM hero stops as fast as it accelerates. The interior also saw sympathetic upgrades featuring exclusive Tommykaira sports seats with red embroidered Tommykaira emblems, a black leather-trimmed centre armrest, handbrake grip and steering wheel with red contrast stitching, and light gold trim inserts. Additionally, there are bespoke Tommykaira floor mats, gear knob, foot rest, tinted windows, automatic climate control, a Clarion infotainment system with satellite navigation, a multifunctional display (MFD), electrically adjustable mirrors and a fabulous Tommykaira aluminium faced digital speedometer with a peak torque and a shift light.Within the history file there is a good summary of its owners in Japan, its auction report including photos prior to export, and a good amount of Japanese history. It was most recently serviced on 24th August 2022 by Abbey Motorsport costing £827 including all fluids changed and a fresh MOT despite only covering just over 1,000km since its last service. In 2019 Abbey Motorsport carried out another service including changing the timing belt, fitting a custom-made radiator and a new battery with the invoice totalling £1,951. The history file also contains a big section of OEM/OEM+ parts bought from either Nissan directly or from Japan and Authenticity Certificates on the Tommykaira parts as well as the original Tommykaira Sales Brochure. It will be supplied with a custom Tommykaira car cover, jack kit and spare wheel.Imported in 2016 and owned by our vendor since then, this utterly stunning Tommykaira R-S has covered just 76,727km (47,675 miles) from new and presents in outstanding condition, testament to our vendor who has kept it in dry storage whenever not in use and never allowed it to see the dreaded UK salt, thus ensuring its all-round stunning condition. This represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a phenomenally rare example of arguably the fastest appreciating modern-classic in the fastest appreciating sector of the market which showcases just how capable these Japanese tuning houses were at building phenomenal cars for both road and track. With the USA market just 1-2 years away for a lot of GT-Rs, it could be an outstandingly smart investment that can also be enjoyed in the meantime.SpecificationMake: NISSANClick here for more details and images

A genuine, UK-supplied, right-hand drive, 2.4T raced extensively since the late eighties and benefitting from massive expenditure over the years including a Bob Watson 2.7, 250bhp, RSR-spec, MFI power unit. A superb, quick, great handling early 911 racer/road car offering great value for money. The first of countless upgrades to the perennial 911 came in 1966, two years after production had commenced, with the introduction of the 911S. Easily distinguishable by its stylish Fuchs five-spoked alloy wheels, the 'S' featured a heavily revised engine producing 160bhp. In 1967, the 911T (Touring) was introduced as a new base model, initially with the 2.0-litre engine in 110bhp form before gaining the 2.2-litre unit along with the rest of the range in 1969, at which point the 911's wheelbase had been extended by 57mm to tame the occasionally wayward handling. By this time, the models on offer had stabilised at three: the entry-level 911T, middle-ranking 911E and top-of-the-range 911S, all of which were available as either a closed coupé or Targa convertible. With the 2.2-litre engine's arrival, a common type of cylinder head was adopted, the differing power outputs being determined principally by valve timing rather than valve sizes as had been the case hitherto. In 1972 all 911 variants received the 2,341cc (nominally 2.4-litre) unit, which in 'T' specification produced a maximum of 130bhp, the same output as the original 911 of 1963.According to its accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this smart, original right-hand drive 911T was completed on 01/02/1972, finished in silver metallic (8080) with a black leatherette/Dogtooth inserts interior and optioned with sport seats, rear wiper and tinted windows before being despatched to Porsche Cars GB and subsequently UK-registered as PGC 689K.David Lees, one of the previous keepers of the T, successfully raced a 911E for Parr Motorsport (47 KOC) and some time later was looking for another one and that search resulted in PGC 689K, then a road car, being selected. It was subsequently built up to race spec and he continued racing this car successfully for Parr Motorsport with many wins and a significant second place in a big grid at the 1989 PCGB Party. David Lees duly retired and Parrs rebuilt the car for Rupert Bullock (there is a detailed invoice for £23,000 in the file) who very quickly passed it on to Liam Dowling over in Ireland who again had great success with PGC (lots of further detail in the file). During his ownership, the legendary Bob Watson was commissioned to rebuild the engine to 2.7 RSR-spec (over £20,000 in the 1990s!) and, running mechanical fuel-injection, the Dyno report in the file indicates an impressive output of just over 250bhp; very competitive in 911 club racing. The nicely bound history file contains dozens of photographs of the car at various circuits/events throughout the period, lots of invoices for parts and works completed, correspondence and a fairly comprehensive list of previous keepers. More recently, it has benefited from all new brakes, an engine/fuel injection service, new clutch just fitted at Pro 9, new Rennsport Recaros and the rare 7/8" Fuchs alloys have been refurbished. There are a couple of recent invoices from Stuttgart Classica totalling around £7,000.Now on the button, this fabulous 911 with its huge history is on the market for the first time in a while. It's a fast, early UK-RHD 911 in a great colour, offering a powerful RSR-spec engine with great handling and, in the right hands, will continue to be competitive for years to come. It appears very attractively guided considering its specification and provenance and we welcome and encourage you to come along to Race Retro and have a look for yourself.      SpecificationMake: PORSCHEModel: 911T 2.4Year: 1972Chassis Number: 9112500845Registration Number: PGC 689KTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 6220842Drive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images

The outstanding and rare Great War ‘immediate’ M.C., immediate ‘V.C. action’ D.F.C. and Waziristan 1925 M.I.D. group of seven awarded to Group Captain J. A. G. Haslam, Royal Air Force and Royal Field Artillery - ‘Freddie’ West’s Observer in 8 Squadron for both awards including the D.F.C. action, for which West was awarded the Victoria Cross, and during which epic engagement both airmen were wounded Military Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued; Distinguished Flying Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued; British War and Victory Medals (Lieut. J. A. G. Haslam. R.A.F.); India General Service 1908-35, 1 clasp, Waziristan 1925, with M.I.D. oak leaves (F/L. J. A. G. Haslam. R.A.F.); Defence and War Medals 1939-45, mounted on card for display, lightly polished, generally very fine (7) £10,000-£15,000 --- M.C. London Gazette 26 July 1918 (jointly listed with his pilot, Lieutenant F. M. F. West): ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. While on patrol, he, with another officer, observed fifteen motor lorries. As these could not be engaged by artillery by zone call, these officers flew 8,000 yards over the enemy lines, at a height of 3,800 feet, in the face of strong opposition from the ground, and dropped four bombs, obtaining direct hits on the lorries and doing considerable damage to their personnel. They then proceeded to attack them with machine-gun fire as they sought cover. A fortnight later they carried out, at a height of 150 feet, a reconnaissance of their corps front, on which an attack was expected. Despite the fact that the clouds were at 200 feet, and there was a thick mist, they obtained most valuable information. During this flight they directed and located the fire of our artillery on a concentration of enemy infantry. Throughout the operations their work in co-operation with our artillery was always of the greatest value, and their enterprise in attacking enemy troops and transport with bombs and machine-gun fire was splendid.’ The original recommendation states: ‘For conspicuous bravery and devotion in carrying out low reconnaissances, and in co-operation with our artillery. While on patrol near Wiencourt L’Equipee on the morning of April 22nd, 1918, they observed fifteen motor lorries on the Guillancourt Road. As these could not be engaged by our artillery by zone call, they flew 8,000 yards over the enemy lines at a height of 3,800 feet, in the face of strong opposition from the ground, and dropped four bombs, obtaining direct hits on the lorries and doing considerable damage to their personnel. They then proceeded to attack them with machine gun fire as they sought cover. On April 5th, 1918, they carried out, at a height of 150 feet, a reconnaissance of their Corps front, on which an attack was thought to be about to be made. Despite the fact that the clouds were at 200 feet, and there was a thick mist, they obtained most valuable information. During this flight they located and directed the fire of our Artillery on a concentration of enemy infantry East of Morlancourt. Their work in co-operation with our artillery has always been of the greatest value, and their enterprise in attacking enemy troops and transport with bombs and machine gun fire, hard to surpass.’ D.F.C. London Gazette 3 December 1918: ‘On 10th August this officer performed a very gallant action. While carrying out a contact patrol he was attacked by seven enemy scouts. Although wounded in the leg at the outset of the engagement, Lt. Haslam, with rare courage and determination, continued to serve his machine gun. One of the enemy aeroplanes was driven down, and the remainder dispersed.’ The original recommendation states: ‘For courage and determination in the face of a vastly superior force of enemy aircraft. On August 10th, 1918, while carrying out a Contact Patrol Reconnaissance for our Tanks, he and his pilot were attacked near Roye by seven enemy scouts. Lieut. Haslam, although wounded in the leg at the outset of the combat, continued to serve his machine gun, with the result that one of the enemy machines went down with its engine damaged, and the remainder were driven off. Throughout the days of the 8th, 9th and 10th of August, 1918, he carried out work of sterling value while on Contact Patrol, and his pluck in maintaining the fight on the 10th, after being wounded, is worthy of high praise.’ Haslam’s pilot, ‘Freddie’ West, was awarded the Victoria Cross for the above action. His award appeared in the London Gazette 8 November 1918, thus: ‘In recognition of his outstanding bravery during aerial combat. Captain West, while engaging hostile troops at a low altitude far over the enemy lines, was attacked by seven enemy aircraft. Early in the engagement one of his legs was partially severed by an explosive bullet, and fell powerless into the controls, rendering the machine for the time unmanageable. Lifting his disabled leg, he regained control of the machine, and, although wounded in the other leg, he, with surpassing bravery and devotion to duty, manoeuvred his machine so skilfully that his observer was enabled to get several good bursts into the enemy machines, which drove them away. Captain West then, with rare courage and determination, desperately wounded as he was, brought his machine over our lines and landed safely. Exhausted by his exertions, he fainted, but on regaining consciousness insisted on writing his report.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 20 November 1925 (Waziristan). James Alexander Gordon ‘Alec’ Haslam was the son of Mr and Mrs J. B. Haslam of 3 Bilton Road, Rugby, and was born in September 1896. He was educated at Rugby, and was awarded an exhibition at Corpus Christi, Cambridge - but in 1915 he opted to enter the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. Haslam was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery in February 1916, and served with the 125th Brigade, R.F.A. in the French theatre of war. Securing a secondment to the flying service in 1918, he trained as an observer and was posted to 8 Squadron (F.K.8’s) in Spring of that year. Haslam was crewed up with Lieutenant F. M. F. West as his pilot, the latter’s biography Winged Diplomat gives the following: ‘I had one unfailing source of uplift at this time, in the shape of my new observer, Lt. James [sic] Haslam. He was seconded from the Royal Artillery and was invaluable on artillery reconnaissance and range-spotting. He was finally allotted to me personally, and it was a comforting thought, when up above the lines with shrapnel flying around and enemy aircraft in the offing, that he was behind me. Haslam had been a Rugby scholar at Cambridge. Silent and shy, he oozed scholarship although he tried to hide it beneath a cloak of simplicity. He had been doing brilliantly at Cambridge and hoped to return there.’ The pair immediately hit it off in the air, and were to survive many scrapes together as Chaz Bowyer relates in For Valour - the Air VC’s: ‘A particularly dangerous low-level sortie for West and Haslam came on 23 April [sic], when they set out to bomb a concentration of German transport well behind the enemy lines. Reaching their objective, the F.K.8 crew made an accurate bombing run and then strafed the target from near zero height before turning for home. As they reached the front line again their aircraft was hit repeatedly by an intense barrage of ground fire, suffering hits in its engine and having an aileron shot away. By skill and good judgement, West scraped across the Allied front lines and accomplished a safe landing only 100 yards west of the trenches. Th...
