A fine exhibition quality model of the British Railways Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 Tender Locomotive No 92220 Evening Star , professionally built to an exceptionally high standard by Mr Ron Martin of Bristol and completed in 1992 after five years of work. Research involved fifteen trips to see the original engine - nearly two thousand photographs were taken in the course of preparing drawings, the client's brief was to create the finest model possible of the last steam locomotive built by British Railways. The locomotive fitted with a Kingswood silver soldered copper boiler with four element radiant super-heater, 90 psi working pressure and twin injectors fitted. Finely detailed cab, prototypically authentic including scale backhead fittings, twin water gauges with linked shutoff valves, pressure & vacuum gauges with BR(W) detailing to the face, lever-operated sliding firehole doors with drop plate, glazed windows with hinged armrests, wooden crew seat and leather padded driver s seat with kit locker beneath, planked cab floor. Vacuum brake and blower valves on stand beside driver's seat, screw reverser with calibrated cut off indicator. Chassis features cast iron cylinders with piston valves operated by Walschaert's gear, steam-operated drain cocks, finely finished and fluted motionwork, lubrication by a pair of replica Wakefield lubricators with sight level glasses. Axles run on roller bearings with working leaf springs. A BR1-G type 5000 gallon six wheel tender with finely riveted tank, fitted folding side doors, hand brake, water pick up control to working water scoop with security chain on the operating handle and counterbalanced weigh-shaft which allowed the fireman to raise and lower the heavy scoop quickly at speed, latched door fittings, steps, hand rails, lamp irons, rear ladder, leaf spring suspension, couplings, connection hoses and vacuum hoses. The model is finely finished in British Railways green livery, hand lined and signwritten including cabside numbers and British Railways emblem on the tender. Smoke deflectors carry the Evening Star nameplate, along with dedication plates commemorating the original locomotive s naming by K.W.C.Grand of the British Transport Commission. Smokebox carries Pines Express headboard and 82F shed plate, detailed rivet-work, fitted steps, hand rails, coupling and vacuum hoses. Length 260 cm Cab width 35 cm Boiler History: Full boiler history and paperwork will be available for inspection at the auction rooms. Kingswood Boiler No. KB94013 with certificated history from 1994 to current day. Steam test certificate valid to the 21st of March 2016. Hydraulic test certificate valid to the 19th of July 2018. Whilst the engine has spent much of its life on display, it was built as a running model and has proved a fine performer on the track - its last outing was in July of this year at the Echills Wood Railway's "Standard Gauge Weekend" event. Built as one of a legendary pair, her sister locomotive is in a private collection in Switzerland. * The British Railways BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 is a class of steam locomotive designed for British Railways by Robert Riddles. The Class 9F was the last in a series of standardized locomotive classes designed for British Railways during the 1950s, and was intended for use on fast, heavy freight trains over long distances. It was one of the most powerful steam locomotive types ever constructed in Britain, and successfully performed its intended duties. The class earned a nickname of 'Spaceships', due to its size and shape. At various times during the 1950s the 9Fs worked passenger trains with great success, indicating the versatility of the design, sometimes considered to represent the ultimate in British steam development. Several experimental variants were constructed in an effort to reduce costs and maintenance, although these met with varying degrees of success. The total number built was 251, production being shared between Swindon (53) and Crewe Works (198). The last of the class, 92220 Evening Star , was the final steam locomotive to be built by British Railways, in 1960. Withdrawals began in 1964, with the final locomotives removed from service in 1968. Several examples have survived into the preservation era in varying states of repair, including Evening Star .
Victoria, crown, 1844, star edge stops, error edge: double struck inscription (one inverted), young head l., rev. crowned shield of arms within wreath (S.3882; ESC.280), ex ring mount, pierced on edge, fine This is a very unusual 1844 crown that has the lettered edge processed twice - once the right way up and then turned over and stamped again. The Royal Mint has commented: 'With crowns of this date, our practice was to roll in the letters of the edge inscription at the blank stage, before striking. In the case of this particular coin, it seems likely that for some reason the blank went through the edge-lettering process twice before being fed into the coining press and being struck by the dies.' This type of error has never been seen or recorded on any other denomination where the edge lettering has been through the process twice, let alone with lettering being both upright and then inverted, taking error edges to an entirely new level. This piece is probably unique.

PATTON GEORGE S.: (1885-1945) American General of World War II. T.L.S., G S Patton Jr., one page, 4to, APO 403, 27th June 1944, to Miss Mary Jane Krieger ('My dear Mary Jane'). Patton thanks his correspondent for her letter and postcard and continues 'I appreciate your offer of candy and when we get some place where we are settled long enough to eat it, I will let you know. Anyway, I am deeply grateful to you for thinking of it.' VG Mary Jane Krieger (d.1982) American Telephone Operator who corresponded with Patton during World War II. Indeed, Martin Blumenson states in The Patton Papers 1940-1945 that Krieger was one of the last four people to whom Patton wrote a letter, on 8th December 1945, before his untimely death. Patton was, in fact, in England at the time of writing the present letter. On the day before, 26th June, Patton recorded in his diary that he had been to Cornwall with General Dwight D. Eisenhower inspecting various units. Having observed Eisenhower's techniques in addressing the soldiers, Patton remarked 'A Commander cannot command and be on the same level...I try to arouse fighting emotion.'

The officer was in company with a part of the 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment which had been dropped on the Catania Plain in Sicily, to secure the high ground South of the River Simeto. On two occasions this officer led small parties to deal with enemy machine-gun positions that were menacing the Battalion’s flank, on each occasion he succeeded in capturing the machine guns and killing or capturing the crews. Later this officer single-handed captured an enemy howitzer together with ammunition, and himself organised a gun crew from the men of the battalion and directed the fire from this weapon on to the enemy. Throughout the action he displayed great courage under heavy fire and complete contempt for danger.’ Territorial Efficiency Decoration: London Gazette: 25 February 1955. STANLEY CHARLES “BOMBS” PANTER, born in Warwickshire on 5 September 1909, joined the 9th (2nd City of London) Royal Fusiliers as a private soldier just before the outbreak of War in August, 1939, having previously been an active member of the Territorial unit based in Balham High Road, Tooting, South London. He fought in France and Belgium, was evacuated and granted an emergency commission as 2nd Lieutenant on 28 December 1940. In late 1941 Panter volunteered for the 1st Parachute Brigade shortly after its formation, and by July 1942 he was commanding an experimental airborne platoon nicknamed “Panter’s Pirates” before a formal transfer to the Parachute Regiment is recorded as having taken place on 1 August. He served in Tunisia, including Medjez El Bab, and as part of Operation Torch led a successful operational jump with parachute mortars over Tunis in December, 1942 (when he seems to have gained the sobriquet ‘Bombs’ for the first time). He was in Italy from September 1943 to 1 May 1944 before dropping with the A Company in Sicily (Operation Husky), and was awarded an immediate M.C. for Catania Plain. Panter landed near Arnhem on the afternoon of Sunday 17 September 1944 as T/Capt., Officer Commanding Support Company, 2nd Parachute Battalion and was closely involved in the capture and defence of the Arnhem Road Bridge under Frost, based at “Company HQ” to the north of the bridge where they held out until capture by the Germans on Thursday 21st. As Panter was wounded he was sent to a makeshift hospital but succeeded in obtaining boots and a revolver, and walked out of the building during Allied shellfire on the night of the 21st. Unluckily he did not get far, walking straight into a German patrol beside the river, and he was recaptured. Like many Arnhem prisoners he was sent initially to Stalag XIIA at Limburg before transfer to Oflag 79 (Brunswick), via Oflag XIIB; Oflag 79 was as it happened the former home of a German parachute regiment and was to be liberated by the U.S. Ninth Army on 12 April 1945. After the war Panter served with the Territorial Army until 1959, receiving the Territorial Efficiency Decoration in 1955, and he also joined the City of London Special Constabulary. He evidently wore an unofficial bar to his M.C. for Arnhem but it should be reiterated that although he was recommended for this by his unit it was not confirmed at Divisional - or, perhaps, ‘suits’ - level. Stan Panter died 0n 20 April, 1968.
Registration : tbc Chassis Number : SCAZD42A0FCX10104 Engine Number : 10104 Odometer reading : 69,992 miles Estimate : £26,000 - £35,000 A term in both French and Italian for a coastal road, the name 'Corniche' was registered by Rolls-Royce in the 1930's yet was only designated to a production model in 1971 after which time the Mulliner Park Ward customisations to coupé and convertible Silver Shadow limousine, took this name. The Coachwork was designed by John Polwhele Blatchley and is characterised in particular by the uplifted waistline above the rear wheel-arches. When launched in 1971, the Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible was the most expensive British car on the market. The introduction of features such as rack-and-pinion steering, rubber bumpers and bi-level air conditioning resulted in demarcation of the production as 'Series II' from 1977 onwards before the name changed to 'Corniche II' in 1986 for the US market following further modifications. Most sources indicate that 3,224 Corniche Convertibles were built of which 2,006 were Series II cars. Rolls-Royce had varying degrees of success with export sales and very roughly 25-30% of Series II cars would have been sold to export markets. Our example is a lefthand drive, Series II, delivered new by Marty Motors Corp, New York on 30th January 1985. Specified with Royal Blue coachwork with tan hide Connelly leather interior and Tan Everflex electric convertible roof. The original owners wallet, with delivery card, remains with the vehicle along with owner's manual, audio guide, warranty pamphlets and service booklet (with stamped entries in New York, Palm Beach, Florida and Maryland). The Rolls-Royce master key is also present. It was privately imported to the UK last year and has been subject to work on the suspension and overhaul of the braking system by an independent specialist who for many years worked on the Corniche whilst at HR Owen, Western Avenue, London at the time when Rolls-Royce was still manufacturing the Corniche and selling many from that flagship dealership. This most elegant low-mileage example is beautifully poised and reported by the private owner to drive majestically. The car is presented in good order throughout and with eight months MoT test certificate, is ready to be enjoyed straight away for continental top-down motoring. Interested parties should note that the current number plate is to be retained and a new aged-related plate issued instead.
