The Exceptionally Rare D.S.M. and two bars (both for North Russia) Group of 6 awarded to Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class James Paterson, Royal Navy, present aboard H.M.-25 during the attack upon Ostend, and also later in the various actions which took place on the Dvina River near Archangel in North Russia, where H.M.-25 engaged and sank the enemy gunboat Boguchi and attacked a number of batteries near Tulgas, prior to her eventual scuttling with the Allied withdrawal, this one of only two D.S.M. with two bar awards made in the Great War, comprising: Distinguished Service Medal, GVR, 2 clasps (269167. J. Paterson. C. E. R. A. 1Cl. H.M. Monitor, 25.); 1914-15 Star (269167 J. Paterson. C.E.R.A. 1., R. N.); British War and Victory Medals (269167 J. Paterson C.E.R.A. 1 R.N.), the latter with M.i.D.; Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (James Paterson, C.E.R.A. 2CL H.M.S. Seahorse.), and Russia, Cross of St George, 4th Class, in silver, numbered 248446, medals court-mounted for wear, lightly polished with a few contact marks, good very fine (6) NOTE: D.S.M.: London Gazette, 12 January 1916: ‘Belgian Coast operations’; D.S.M. (Bar): London Gazette, 12 December 1918: ‘White Sea Operations, Dvina & Vaga Rivers’; D.S.M. (2nd Bar): London Gazette, 12 December 1919: ‘for services in Russia, 1918, 1919’. Concerning the first D.S.M. award, Paterson and his vessel H.M.-25 are specially mentioned in Vice Admiral Reginald H S Bacon’s despatch of the 3rd of December, 1915, as follows: “On the 6th September I attacked Ostende with five monitors including General Craufurd (Commander E Altham R.N.) and “M.25” (Lieutenant-Commander B. H. Ramsay, R.N.), and damage was done to submarine workshops and harbour works. The enemy returned our fire with heavy guns of calibre probably larger than our own, and with considerable accuracy. Again the shooting on the part of our vessels was remarkably good, and the assistance rendered by the Auxiliary Craft most valuable.” Having taken part in these important operations on the Belgian coast, which also included an attack upon Zeebrugge, C.E.R.A. 1st Cl. Paterson was also involved in the action of the Dvina River near Archangel in North Russia . She was one of 5 such vessels used in this action, and using her 7.5-inch naval gun she quickly engaged and repelled the Bolshevik gun boats which had thus far hindered progress of the ground troops near the Dvina on the 26th and 28th of August, 1919. M-25 also was of much assistance in an attack upon enemy batteries near Tulgas, despite suffering some damage from a single direct hit and a number of casualties amongst her gun team, and she successfully sank the large gunboat Moguchi with two well-placed shells, as detailed in ‘Big Gun Monitors’ by Ian Buxton. Due to the falling level of the river soon after, both M-25 and M-27 returned to Archangel and scuttled on the 16th of September 1919, to prevent them falling into the hands of the Bolshevik forces. The original recommendation for Paterson’s first bar to the D.S.M. reads as follows: ‘In charge of Engine Room Department – kept machine in highest state of efficiency in Dvina River for 45 days during which time the ship was almost constantly at half an hours’ notice, & no opportunity for boiler cleaning. In every case, when negotiating the more difficult parts of the River Channel, [the] ship had to be steered by the screws, the rudder being useless in the basin (?). The slightest mistake in the handling of the engine would have entailed the loss of the monitor and the entire expedition.’ Paterson was later awarded another bar to his D.S.M. for services in White Russia, making his one of only two DSM & 2-bar awards were made during the entire Great War, the other being awarded to Deckhand L. Findlay, R.N.R. Paterson’s 2nd Bar recommendation reads as follows: ‘Was C.E.R.A. in charge of machinery of M.”25” during the winter and opening of the River Campaign in May 1919 – Relieved at the end of May 1919. He received a bar to his D.S.M. decoration for service in River Dwina, August to October 1918. Very much above average in ability and always ready with his machinery for any service. Looked after his machinery and department in the most efficient manner possible during winter. In action at River Front during May 1919. Very strongly recommended.’

WW2 RAF Historically Important Oslo Gestapo HQ Low Level Daylight Raid Pilot’s DSO., MBE., DFC & Bar AE. Group of Nine Medals. This outstanding grouping was awarded to Wing Commander Douglas Alfred George Parry who received an immediate DSO for the Oslo raid and the Bar to the DFC for a daylight attack on the Knepsack (Cologne) power station, where he found himself alone, to the delight of the German anti aircraft batteries. Comprising: Distinguished Service Order , Breast Badge of a Member of the British Empire, Distinguished Flying Cross (1941) & Bar, 1939/45 Star, Aircrew Europe Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, EIIR 1953 Coronation Medal, Air Efficiency Medal (GVIR) “ACT SQN LDR D.A.G. PARRY RAFVR”. Group remains mounted court style as originally worn ... Pilots Flying Log Book, this covering the period 8th April 1939 until 6th September 1944 ... Original British Passport when flying a BOAC Mosquito on the “Ball Bearing” Run to Sweden ... A folder of research etc. The Recommendation of the award of the Distinguished Service Order was raised on the 2nd October 1942. “On September 25th Squadron Leader Parry was detailed to lead 4 aircraft to attack the Gestapo Headquarters of the Quisling rally in Oslo Norway. It was a flight that required good leadership determination and accurate flying. Press reports and photographs have shown that the raid was a great success. The flight and actual attack was carried out from very low level, actually 660 miles had to be flown before the target was reached. Squadron Leader Parry led his flight straight at the target and himself scored direct hits on the centre building. Over the target the formation was attacked by 3 F.W. 190’s but in spite of this the attack was pressed home and by skilful flying and good evasive action the fighters were forced to break off the combat about 30 miles from the target. It was a difficult mission to bomb one set of buildings from roof-top height in the capital city of Norway but owing to the good and skilful leadership of this Officer it was carried out exactly to plan. Squadron Leader Parry has now completed 60 Operational flights and is a pilot of outstanding ability. Officer Commanding Comments. Strongly recommended for the award of the Distinguished Service Order. This operation was led with determination and efficiency, despite attacks by enemy aircraft on the run up to the target. Apart from this individual incident, Squadron Leader Parry has invariably shown determination on many sorties since Mosquitos commenced operations and he has been instrumental in maintaining a high standard of moral in the Squadron during a difficult period.” Recommendation for the Bar to the Distinguished Flying Cross was raised on the 28th August 1942. On the 25th August F/Lt Parry was detailed to attack Knepsack (Cologne) power station in daylight. The weather conditions at the time were almost clear sky, good visibility though some haze near the ground. The attack had to be made from low level to ensure sufficiently accurate bombing of the comparatively small target. In view of this it was decided that the whole operation should be carried out at low level. F/Lt Parry led two other aircraft which were detailed to attack targets in the same locality. One of these aircraft failed to return whilst the other attacked an alternative. Due partly to ground haze and partly a large number of insects sticking to the windscreen the pilots view ahead was restricted and conditions for low level flying were not easy. In spite of these difficulties and with the full knowledge that his reception from ground defences would be severe, the target was attacked with great determination and in the face of intense A.A, fire direct hits were scored. F/Lt Parry has now carried out 10 operational sorties during this, his second tour. Previously he had completed 43 sorties during his first tour for which he was given a non immediate award of the DFC. he has always displayed the greatest courage and Initiative. I strongly recommend the Immediate award of a Bar to the DFC.” Recommendation for the award of the DFC was raised on the 29th April 1941. Pilot Officer Parry has been carrying out operational flying by day and night in no. 110 (Hyderabad) Squadron since 19th July 1940. He is an extremely reliable pilot and he carries out his operational tasks in a resolute manner and with conspicuous success. Two thirds of his operational flying has been carried out on the same aircraft without sustaining any damage whatsoever by faulty handling, although the aircraft on many occasions has been badly hit by enemy fire. By his resolve and cheerful bearing, this volunteer reserve officer has been an example and inspiration to the other pilots in his Squadron and I can not speak to highly of his services. I recommend him in the strongest possible terms for the award for which he is now recommended for the second time. Wing Commander Douglas Alfred George Parry DSO., MBE., DFC & Bar, AE. was born in April 1915 he was was known to all as George, rummer has it that like “George” the aircraft automatic pilot, he always flew a steady course to and from the target. He joined the RAFVR starting pilot training at No.20 EFTS in April 1939. qualifying as a Pilot in July 1940 he was posted to 110 Squadron operating the Bristol Blenheim. It was here that he learnt his skill as a low level pilot, undertaking low level raids over occupied France and shipping. He was awarded the DFC in 1941 and at the end of his first tour volunteered to remain with the Squadron. In October 1941 he received a telephone call from an old Commanding Officer who was then with 105 Squadron. Parry was offered a posting to 105 Squadron and was to become one of the first operational pilots of the new “Wooden Wonder” the De Havilland Mosquito. In the following year he was involved in a number of low level operations in the new aircraft and in August 1942 flew a stripped out Mosquito “Airliner” in the colours of BOAC to Sweden carrying diplomatic mail and returning with Ball Bearings. During his time in Sweden he was ordered to carry at all times a flare pistol and if there was any chance of the “Mossie” being examined or stolen by the Germans he was to destroy it. The special British Passport used for these civilian run operations is included in the lot. Back with his unit in September 1942 he was briefed to lead his most daring operation to date. On the 25th September he was briefed to lead 4 aircraft in daylight to attack the Gestapo Headquarters in Oslo Norway. His task to destroy the building and all information on resistance units and second fold to destroy a parade being held by the pro Nazi Quisling. Reaching Oslo, the attack began a roof top height, the bombs fell on their targets with devastating results. However unknown to the RAF and our four Mosquitos, FW190 German fighter aircraft were taking part in a flypast over the Quisling Parade, the fighters attacked shooting down one Mosquito but the other three including Parry made their escape. He continued to participate in low level operations until 1943 when he was finely “screened” from Ops for a rest and it appears that he was then posted as an instructor and then Staff appointments. He remained with the RAF until 1947 and then joined Boulton Paul Company in Norwich. He kept his links with the RAFVR serving as CO of the 3620 (County of Norfolk) Fighter Control Unit and a CO of an Air Training Squadron. General - Thematics : MEDICAL AND HEALTH - 'Health' is a huge subject to collect and in all my 43 years full-time in philately this is the most extraordinary thematic health collection I have ever seen - an outstanding and extensive worldwide A-Z 'health' collection but going into fascinating depth way beyond most - such as Q. why would the collection include a mint Gandhi set including 10R? - Answer: Gandhi, whilst working in South Africa raised an Ambulance Corps at the outbreak of the Boer War. Does this serve to give a small flavour of this fascinating collection and the years of work and research that have gone into it? Neatly presented in sixteen quality albums, covering all aspects from Malaria, Aids, UNICEF, Red Cross, W.H.O., Family Planning, personalities incl. pioneers etc, with mint (large percentage is unmounted) and used stamps (incl. some imperf variants) spanning the early 1900's right through to the 1990's, plus masses of miniature sheets, and covers etc; to give a flavour, the collection includes Estonia 1920's imperf and perf sets, Denmark 1929 Cancer sets mint and used, Czechoslovakia 1926 Display set mint, 1884 three covers from Canada to Palermo with disinfected "slits", Malta 1841 and 1851 "Lazaret" disinfected cachets, Albania 1924 sets mint, India 1948 Gandhi set mint, 1849 Pavia disinfected cover, Solomon Islands 1938 "Send the Doctor" printed cover, Trinidad 1914 ¼d labels block of four mint, WW1 postcards ex. Salonica hospital, other Russian area cards from Nurses, and many other better pieces throughtout. A lifetimes work, beautifully displayed and most importantly written up - it would be an absolute joy for the right collector to take this collection to an even higher level, and unlike some subjects the scope is almost infinite to continue from this already significant base. (approx 9850 stamps, 470 miniature sheets and 235 covers or cards). Please note the whole collection may be viewed online; please ask UPA to email the Google Picassa link. OVERSEAS SHIPPING COST may exceed £100 but we will contribute the 1st £100 of shipping so the winning bidder just pays any difference.

- The subject of a five-page article in Mercedes Enthusiast magazine (June 2013 issue) - Treated to an engine overhaul, bare metal respray and re-trim in leather between 2002 and 2008 - Recent £6,000 expenditure on brakes, suspension, engine / gearbox mounts, re-chromed bumpers, fresh tyres and servicing etc. - 1 of 14,173 220SEb Coupes made. Fuel-injected 2195cc straight-six engine allied to four-speed manual transmission. Via the W111 'fintail' series of 1959, Mercedes continued its practice of offering special two-door Coupe or Roadster versions of its Saloon cars, and the 220SEB took this supreme elegance to a whole new level. Based on the flagship S-class W111 'fintail' Saloon, with its signature upright headlights and imposing traditional Mercedes-Benz grille, the Coupe comprised a light and airy pillarless glasshouse over a distinctive two-door body. The 220 Coupe was very well appointed inside, featuring Mercedes textured leather and wood trimmings. The model's 2195cc, SOHC engine employed mechanical fuel injection of the same type as the 'Pagoda' SLs - its 120bhp being sufficient to propel the car at up to 106mph. The suspension comprised wishbones and coil springs at the front and low-pivot swing-axles with radius arms and coil springs at the rear. The resulting ride was very statesmanlike. A total of some 14,173 220SEB Coupes were built between 1961 and 1965 when the run was terminated. 'AAP 122B' vacated the Stuttgart production line in 1964. Its Red two-door Coupe bodywork is complemented by Cream leather interior trim, ivory-coloured steering wheel and wool carpets, and a wood facia. In 2002 it was treated to a comprehensive engine overhaul by Top Marques; in 2005 it benefited from a full bare metal respray, and in 2008 the interior was completely refurbished. Having been garaged ever since, it is still classed by the vendor as having 'very good' bodywork, paintwork, interior, straight-six engine and manual four-speed gearbox. Nevertheless the underside has just received a repaint and protection against the elements, as well as a service and fresh MOT. Furthermore, £6,000 has been invested in the brakes, suspension, engine and gearbox mounts, rechroming, new tyres etc. The 220 is now offered complete with a selection of invoices, old MOTS and a copy of the Mercedes Enthusiast magazine in which 'AAP 122B' starred in 2013.
