YXG 775Chassis no. 276655Odometer Reading: TBAMoT Expiry: Exempt *A rare Seven derivative*VSCC dated*New tyres One of the rarer Seven versions, this APD tourer is a 1933/1934 model that wasn't road-registered until 1937, the trade vendor reports. It is said to have patinated (but charm-inducing) two-tone blue and black paint, the engine bay clean and tidy. The interior is a mix of original and later, the seat backs described as original and the bases recovered while the soft top (coming with side screens) is said to be good. Interesting Seven model that is described as being in running condition, the engine starting instantly and pulling well, while the two-tone paint adds to the charm. Ideal entry level VSCC motoring. The Property of Robbie Coltrane1964 Jaguar Mk2 3.4-Litre SaloonRegistration no. HOO 449BChassis no. 164567DNOdometer Reading: 40,009MoT Expiry: 17/04/2020*Features mechanical upgrades*Engine re-built in 2002*Good bodyworkSitting between the entry-level 2.4 and the range-topping 3.8 many Jaguar cognescenti regard the 3.4 as the best of the trio, its mix of handling and performance not being bettered by the bigger-engined model. Noted actor Robbie Coltrane bought this manual gearbox model from Bonhams in 1998 and during his 22 years' ownership it has enjoyed some sensible modifications including upgraded brakes and steering, as well as a five-speed manual gearbox. Marque specialists Vicarage re-built the engine in 2002 following an engine fire (recorded as a Category C) while two years ago Alyth Restorations carried out £32,000-worth of work. It should be noted that a 240 dashboard is fitted featuring the sliding choke control. It starts and runs well, the running gear is said to be in generally good order, as are the electrics. Bodywork, paint and wheels remain in very good condition. Interior-wise the seats are in good fettle while door cards, dashboard and headlining offer scope for some improvement if required. Market readjustment has seen 'Mk2' values becoming more sensible and these models are once again temptingly priced, as this desirable-specification 3.4 shows. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 70/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. The health and safety of both our customers and team remains the utmost priority, we are therefore operating to strict COVID-19 guidelines and full instructions will be given when making your appointment. First registered in the UK on 17th May 1995 in Graphite Mica with Grey Saville hide Dating from 1995, this 4-litre car features 'Celebration' bumpers and a revised interior On offer from an eclectic collection made up of Jaguars, Aston Martins and Bentleys Previous MOTs, service receipts and a signed declaration corroborates the mileage of c17,000 The car will benefit from a fresh MOT and further detailing prior to the sale Conceived as a comfortable and long-legged Grand Routier, rather than an out-and-out sports car like the preceding E-Type, the XJ-S made use of the Jaguar XJ6/XJ12 saloon platform and running gear. Shorter in the wheelbase than its saloon siblings, the XJS debuted as a V12-powered Coupe, with six-cylinder and soft-top versions following in the 1980s. The XJS had a lot to live up to and comparisons to its iconic predecessor are dismissed with today's hindsight as being unfair. Jaguar appears to have been quite long-sighted with their ambitions for the model as nippy, impractical British sports cars were difficult to sell during the 1980s, Aston Martin's V8 coupe catered for the very wealthy and the Lotus Esprit was perceived as the chariot of choice for the nimble-footed Yuppie. The XJS, however, was the perfect car for the successful gentleman of a certain age wanting a stylish, comfortable sports coupe that cut a dash and its general level of comfort and lightness of controls made it particularly popular with women. By the time production ceased in 1996, 115,413 coupes, cabriolets and convertibles had found homes. Jaguar launched a faintly re-styled XJS in 1991 sporting wrap-around rear lights, improved interior, new five-spoke alloy wheels and chrome inserts to the upper part of the bumpers. Two engines were made available, the 6.0-litre V12 and the silky smooth AJ6-derived 4.0-litre. From 1993, the XJS was produced with colour-coded bumpers and these pre-1996 cars are often mistakenly called Celebration models due to being near identical to the final run of the model formally entitled the 'Celebration'. These earlier cars are often described as the 'Facelift 1.5', featuring five-spoke alloys and leather-covered gear selectors but none of the XK8 prototype electrics fitted in the later Celebration cars. This exceptional motor car is finished in Graphite Mica with a Grey Saville hide interior and was first registered on the 17th May 1995. It was delivered in right-hand drive with a kilometre per hour speedometer and it's believed that it was a cancelled overseas order and that Jaguar Cars Ltd was the first keeper. In 2013 Silverstone Auctions sold the car, our vendor at the time having owned it since 1996. The speedometer was documented as being changed at 4,911 kilometres (3,050 miles) for a correct UK unit which was showing 14,620miles at the time of cataloguing or circa 17,000 miles combined. The history file contains previous MOTs detailing the mileage, main dealer service receipts and a signed declaration from a previous owner stating such. The vendor informs us that the paint is original and that the car will be detailed and MOT'd for the sale. The XJS has finally come of age with low mileage and original cars becoming harder to find. With hindsight, it's generally felt that cars from the mid-1990s are the most desirable and we are really pleased, once again, to offer this exceptional example. Jung on Einstein´s Theory of Relativity and belief in God  JUNG CARL: (1875-1961) Swiss Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist who founded analytical psychology. An interesting T.L.S., C.G. Jung, one page, 4to, Zurich, 4th March 1954, on his personal printed stationery, to Henri Corbiere, in French. Jung responds to his correspondent´s questions and refers to Albert Einstein,  stating `Because Mr. Einstein is a top-level Physician and Mathematician, I do not consider myself competent at all to judge him within his own field. No sense that I repeat the general opinion about him. You had better ask his closer colleagues,  for example Prof. Dr. P. Scherrer… Prof. Dr. Peter Preiswerk –Vischer… Prof. Dr. W. Pauli...´ further adding `I met Mr. Einstein when he was in Zurich; I had the great luck of discussing with him the origins of his theory of relativity. Because I am not a Physician, or Mathematician, I wasn´t able to follow the evolution of his mathematical theory which seems to me too difficult to understand.´ Jung concludes with an important observation on Einstein´s religious beliefs, `I do not know if it is true that Mr. Einstein said he could not believe that God was playing dice at the time he created the world…´ With some very minor creasing to the edges, otherwise VG £4000-6000

V-2 ROCKET: A small archive or original typed documents (some carbon copies, others mimeographed) relating to Nazi Germany's development of the V-2 rocket, the world's first long-range guided ballistic missile, thirty pages, mainly 4to, n.p. (Headquarters S), October 1944 - January 1945, some stamped as Top Secret, in German. 'Accompanied by a complete English translation' . The documents include Test Reports containing various technical data relating to trials of vertical launches to 65 km in clear skies ('for observation and filming of possible in-flight break-up during ascent phase), trials of accelerometers, pyrotechnic ignition, generator batteries and fibreglass protection, further detailing results and observations including the application of new non-flammable yellow paint to aid visual tracking, satisfactory control and radio systems etc., concluding that the 'device cleared for firing' and in another test stating that the rocket had insufficient thrust and after 155 seconds of flight it was 'seen to fall into a transverse altitude' and at 210 seconds (approximately 52 km altitude) the rocket oscillated severely, turning 'into a narrow corkscrew-like twisting motion' and that, at about the same time, 'the yellow paint began to turn a sludgy brown' and at 271 seconds the rocket was 'no longer behaving abnormally' and 'exploded in bright flames'; a summary of a Rocket School's training stating, in part, 'There being no experience in deployment of the A4 [the technical name of the V-2, i.e. Aggregat 4] and the technology being highly advanced, the training was at first purely technical in conception. At HAP 11 [Heimat Artillery Park 11, Karlshagen, Pomerania] it was done in such a way that the engineers working there also acted as teachers on a first course that trained specialists for the first launch batteries' further stating that the original plan could not be implemented because a concentration of specialist rocket force manpower at HAP 11 was undesirable on account of the possibility of aerial attack and therefore the Headquarters were moved to Koszalin, providing a table of organisation to include administrative staff, specialists including a counterespionage officer, guard platoon troops, armourers, orderlies, cooks and instructors etc., and concluding 'the staffing envisaged is necessary for the provision of the courses…..special importance is accorded to training the rising generation as officers, NCOs and men for the rocket forces. Any reduction in the establishment here proposed would endanger the success of the planned training'; a Map Exercise prepared by Education Staff in preparation for the deployment of a long-range rocket and detailing the enemy's situation as having 'assembled strong land forces in Southern Sweden with numerous warships and transports off the south coast, in preparation for landing on German Baltic coast' and the enemy's air situation as growing in superiority with heavy bomb attacks on Kolberg and Koszalin and 'many low-flying planes which….have attacked two of our supply trucks'; and a Field Report statement by Specialist Officer Metzler, dated 20th January 1945 and stating, in part, 'The undersigned was posted on attachment to Techn. Combat Unit, Commissioner for Special Assignment (Army) at the start of the deployment of the V-2 weapon in early September 1944….where he provided engineering services until the termination of the attachment in mid-January 1945…..The undersigned joined the battery at Haarzuilens…..the firing position was located in a suburb of Den Haag, where the battery executed the double launch that fired the first two rockets on London. The battery was withdrawn from Holland in mid-September on account of the English airborne landing at Arnhem, moving to a firing position…..of Westphalia to bombard targets Liege and Antwerp…..Firing suffered at first from the well-known teething problems. Supply left much to be desired……as a result, firing operations were at first very slow…..Night operations were particularly inefficient…..With systematic training, manning changes and exercises, firing operations have now been brought to a very high level of competence…..The normal time to prepare a device for firing, from the start to launch, is on average around 90 minutes……Firing was in general hardly affected by enemy action, though some delays to work and firing on account of the presence of enemy aircraft had to be accepted. During deployment in Holland, the firing position only once suffered a daylight attack by low flying planes using on-board armament….Changes of position were thus frequently ordered while deployed in Holland. In Westphalia, whose landscape is dotted with many wooded copses, no change of position proved necessary. The battery fired for two months from the same position without ever being discovered by the frequent spotter planes', continuing to detail various problems and difficulties in the launches of V-2 rockets including the failure of the Volkswagen motor in starting, inadequate power supply, loose fitting valves and pumps, leaks, incorrect or incomplete wiring systems, faulty circuits, combustion chamber explosions etc., and also commenting on training 'Observation of a well-functioning firing platoon reveals that the steps of the launch operation follow each other like clockwork…..the whole platoon being fused together into a single working unit in which each individual does what is necessary for the rapid execution of the operation, either on his own initiative or at most in response to a codeword…..' Some of the documents bear pencil and ink annotations and corrections. Some extensive age wear, including tears, areas of paper loss, staining and some evidence of singing caused by previous fire damage. Only FR, Qty. £3000-4000

Ltd., 1888', suspended from five bars detailing the teams awards from the season, with pin clip clasp to the reverse, in nine carat gold, 39mm high overall Note: Considered Celtic's annus mirabilis, the 1966/67 season will forever go down as the finest in the club’s history. In this famously successful season, the team reigned victorious in every competition they entered: the Glasgow Cup, the Scottish League Cup, the Scottish Cup, the Scottish League and of course, the European Cup. In the process, the Scottish side scored a world record total of 196 goals across all competitions. Celtic legend Stevie Chalmers (1935 – 2019) was an integral part of this team. The first in a season of victories, Celtic won the Scottish League Cup on 29 October 1966. The final was contested between Celtic and their Old Firm rivals, Rangers, for a third consecutive season. Celtic won 1-0 to lift the cup at Hampden Park, with Bobby Lennox scoring the only goal. Celtic won the Glasgow Cup one week later on 7 November 1966 at Celtic Park. Celtic had already dispatched their Old Firm rivals in the first round with an emphatic 4-0 victory at Ibrox. This was the first of three 4-0 victories on the road to the trophy, defeating Queen’s Park and then Partick in the final, Chalmers scoring the opener. They then went on to win the Scottish Cup on 29 April 1967. After what had been a fairly straightforward route, Celtic defeated Aberdeen 2-0 at Hampden in the final. This match achieved the record attendance of the season for Celtic F.C., with a turnout of over 126,000 fans. Celtic would then go on to clinch the Scottish First Division on 6 May 1967, becoming the reigning champions for a second season running. Despite Celtic’s resounding successes across other competitions (having even remained undefeated in the league bar two matches), this would go down to the wire, with them having gone toe to toe with their city rivals, Rangers F.C. It wasn’t until the penultimate game of the season that Celtic would emerge victorious, with the invaluable point secured from a 2-2 draw at Ibrox ensuring they could no longer be caught. Later in May, Celtic emerged the first British club to win the European Cup, doing so ‘in the heat of Lisbon’ on 25 May 1967. It was the first time Celtic had qualified for the tournament, the road to Lisbon starting with comfortable victories against F.C. Zurich (5-0 agg.) and Nantes (6-2 agg.). The quarter final in March was a more fiercely contested affair, with Celtic facing the Yugoslavian champions Vojvodina. Celtic lost the first leg away in Novi Sad (1-0), with the return leg in Glasgow being a similar affair, Vojvodina defending resolutely throughout. Celtic would level the tie on aggregate with a second half goal from Chalmers, and went on to emerge victorious when Captain Billy McNeill headed in a goal in the final minutes of the game. The first leg of the semi-finals against Czechoslovakian side Dukla Prague saw Celtic win 3-1. For the second leg, manager Jock Stein instructed the squad to play in a defensive formation, this differing from their usual attacking style. These tactics worked well for the side, securing a 0-0 draw to progress to the final. The final of the European Cup was contested at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon. Things didn’t start out to plan for the Celts, as they conceded a penalty kick after Jim Craig brought down Renato Cappellini in the box within seven minutes of the game. After converting the spot kick, the Italians would revert to their typical defensive formation, which saw them play eleven men behind the ball. This was the antithesis of Celtic’s forward playing style, who then ‘went out to attack’. Of their thirty-nine shots, twenty were saved and nineteen were off target. On the 63rd minute, their perseverance would prove fruitful when Tommy Gemmell fired home for an equaliser. With minutes left to spare, the ball fell again to Gemmell who would play on Bobby Murdoch whose long range effort was resolutely fired home by Stevie Chalmers, the most important goal in the history of the club. This win cemented the legendary status of the Celtic side, the Lisbon Lions, in British footballing history. Up until this point, every winner of the European Cup since its inception in 1955 had been either Spanish, Portuguese or Italian. Upon their return to Glasgow, the Lisbon Lions were each presented with a unique medal commemorating the season’s successes. Together, the six represent the most significant Celtic F.C. medal group ever to come at auction, and one of the most significant in footballing history. The European Cup Medals of fellow footballing legends have achieved impressive auction results in the past. In 2010, George Best's single European Cup winner's medal from 1968 sold at auction for £156,000. In 2015, Kenny Dalglish reportedly sold his 1984 European Cup winner's medal for £165,000.

Lot 480

Early 13th century AD. An iron longsword of Oakeshott's Type XIIIA, cross style 1, pommel type H; a 'Bastard' sword (sword that can also be used with two hands), with long tapering blade, cutting edges running nearly parallel to the tip; just below the hilt, before the edges begin their virtual straight running to the point, the blade is swelling slightly in width; the narrow fullers extended for two-thirds of its length; the lower guard is simple and straight; the grip is longer than usual of type XIII allowing for the off-hand to be used for extra leverage and power; the pommel is highly decorated with two different inlays, from one side a circular space divided in eight sections, the other side with a possible heraldic symbol, representing a triangular shield decorated with embossed annulets surmounting a kantharos from which water is springing; both images are inscribed inside a golden circle; some corrosions on the lower edges but no evidence of traces of fighting nicks, both cutting edges are well preserved; German or English manufacture. See Petersen, J., De Norske Vikingsverd, Oslo, 1919; Shetelig, H., Scandinavian Archaeology, Oxford, 1937; Oakeshott, E.,The archaeology of the weapons, arms and armours from Prehistory to the age of Chivalry, Woodbridge, 1960 (1999); Oakeshott, E., The sword in the Age of the Chivalry, Woodbridge, 1964 (1994); Oakeshott, E., Records of the Medieval Sword, Woodbridge, 1991; the sword, belongs to the type of 'war sword' and finds a good correspondence with various swords of the first half of the 14th century, like some specimens preserved in the Museum Art Gallery of Glasgow (Oakeshott, 1991, pp.103 n.7; 105, nn.10-11); for what concern the cross-guard, it is of a simple and obvious form, a straight bar tapering slightly toward the ends; first found in Viking graves of the 10th century (s. Shetelig, 1937), and called by the Vikings Gaddhjalt (Spike-Hilt, s. Petersen, 1919), it was still in use in the Renaissance (Oakeshott, 1994, p.113 and plates IC, 6A and 46B), generally square in section, it may sometimes be circular, or in rare, late cases octagonal; pommel forms vary very often on the survival specimens, though the wheel shape from H to K predominate; crosses both on surviving example and those shown in the art are nearly always straight, generally of type 1 or 2; there are some excellent pictures of these swords in an English manuscript of the early years of the fourteenth century (B.M. MS. Roy. 19.B.XV, an Apocalypse of St. John (Oakeshott, 1994, fig.89-90); nearly every German military tomb effigy of the period between about 1280-1350 AD has one of these big swords and several are shown on English effigies, as for instance at Astbury in Cheshire; one very good example on an English tomb is difficult to see—a little mounted figure high up on the canopy of Edmund Crouchback's tomb in Westminster Abbey; Edmund was the Earl of Lancaster, second son of Henry III, and died in 1296. It is possible to see it if you climb up into the Islip Chapel in the North Choir aisle, for this is raised about 30 ft. above the level of the floor; look across the aisle over the parapet of the chapel which spans the arch containing it and there is this small knight with a great war sword girt to his waist (Oakeshott,1994, fig.92); another of an earlier date is to be found in an admirable little drawing of a knight fighting a giant upon a page of a small Psalter made for the eldest son of Edward I of England, Alphonso, who died in 1284 (Oakeshott, 1994, fig.91"). 1.3 kg, 1.03m (40 1/2").From an important private family collection of arms and armour; acquired on the European art market in the 1980s, and thence by descent; accompanied by an academic report by military specialist Dr Raffaele D'Amato.A long double-handed sword, Oakeshott type XIIIa; the most beautiful element of this sword is its decorative pommel, of type H in the Oakeshott classification (Oakeshott, 1994, p.95"). This is one of the commonest of all medieval pommels, where the edges of the disc are chamfered off on each face, giving a low prominence on either side, the inner, flat faces being about a quarter less in diameter than the outer rim. It is found on swords of every type from the 10th century until the early 15th century AD, and after three-quarters of a century of apparent unpopularity it appears again, rarely, between c.1500-1525. What is extraordinary is not the pommel in itself, but the inlaid decoration over it. The shield with annulets ('little rings' in heraldry) visible on one side is a common charge, which may allude to the custom of the prelates to receive their investiture per baculum et annulum i.e. 'by rod and by ring', and can also be described as a roundel that has been 'voided' (ie. with its centre cut out"). In medieval English heraldry, annulets could represent a fifth son. The shield is surmounted by a pot from which water is springing, an obvious connection with the biblical passage: 'Jesus answered: Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life'' (John, IV,13-14"). The solar disc on the other side of the pommel evokes Christ's ancient monogram. These references to Christian symbolism suggest that the owner of the sword was an clergyman, maybe the fifth son of an aristocratic English family.Fine condition. Very rare.

Proust tries to meet urgently his correspondent and states `I have allowed myself to make you call at home…They responded that you were at Madame de St Marceaux´s home. If by any chance between 9h1/2 and midnight you walk by close to my home (102 B[oulevar]d Hausmann, 2nd level without entresol, (two levels in total) it would be priceless for me if before sending my letter related to my book I could get your advice on the terms.´ and further saying `I am telling you what it is about in order that you do not think it is a honour affair..´ folded, otherwise VG £4000-6000

Lot 577

CHAVEZ HUGO: (1954-2013) President of Venezuela 1999-2013. An excellent content T.L.S., H. Chavez, five pages, folio, Yare, 6th February 1993, on his personal printed stationery, to Bolivarian Lieutenant Luis Chacon Roa, in Spanish. The typed document bears to the upper right corner an attractive colourful logo of the MBR200 Revolutionary Bolivarian movement. Chavez reports on his unsuccessful coup d´état against the government of President Carlos Andres Perez in 1992, for which he was imprisoned and states in part `The first matter you mention is the one of the video. I have traced the provenance, even to Peru, because as you know my military honour and loyalty are at stake. There are so many contradictions listening to our compatriots´ reports that I often doubt if we will ever know the “true-truth”. I am convinced that it was an anarchic decision taken by a very small group of civilians who managed to manipulate the situation taking advantage of military command failures..´ further explaining how and when he decided to lead the coup d´état `In November Rojas and his group started putting strong pressure from Caracas, pushing us to go ahead with the plan “Ezequiel Zamora”, arguing that it was the right moment, but the truth is that it wasn´t so. Although conditions and social temperature of the country were at the maximum level, on the military side we were having problems….I made a mistake, one of the many I have made in my life. I gave in to the pressure and after a midnight meeting in a night bar in Cagua, in presence of Ronald, Rojas, Suarez and Freites, I accepted to launch the coup on the date they proposed, 16th December…Human weaknesses!´ Chavez reports on the reasons of the coup failure, with lengthy and interesting detailed explanations about their plans, their logistics problems, unexpected mistakes, lack of military support at the last minute and his final decision `Today, tomorrow and always, I think that my decision under such and same circumstances would always be the same. I will never regret it, with deep pain and realizing that all the plan was collapsing, I gave that military honour order learned “PABELLONES…ARMEN”. A letter of extraordinary historical content. Very small overall minor age wear, with few small stains, otherwise VG £600-900 The letter is written from Yare, where Chavez was arrested and imprisoned after his coup attempt on 4th February 1992.The MBR-200 was the clandestine Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement founded in the early 80´s by Hugo Chavez and his former couple Herma Marksman, a History teacher, inspired by Ezequiel Zamora (1817-1860) Venezuelan leader of the federalists, Simon Bolivar (1783-1830) Venezuela´s Liberator, and Simon Rodriguez (1769-1854) Venezuelan Philosopher and Bolivar´s mentor, who were known as the “Three Roots of the Tree”.With provenance from the private collection of Herma Marksman. Herma Marksman: (1949- ) born of a peasant woman and a German immigrant she was in her 30s when she met the future Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, who was then married and in his twenties. She became his mistress. They both were students of socialism and idealistic and she helped him in his academic studies. After the failed 1992 coup attempt Chavez left both his first wife and mistress. Marksman will later repudiate Chavez, and described his government as imposing a "fascist dictatorship". She has written several essays and a book titled El Otro Chávez, "The other Chavez", describing her relationship with him.

Maeterlinck responds to his correspondent and refers to the interesting anthology work received from him and states `The selection done, as far as I can judge according to the poets who I know, seems very well done in my opinion..´ further saying that he only misses `..several parts of “La chanson d´Eve” (“Eve´s Song”), or “Entrevision” by Charles van Lerberghe who I consider the most perfect poet of the last twenty years. His verses would have increased the level of today´s poetry, which between you and I, we must admit is quite low..´ Together with Georgette Leblanc-Maeterlinck (1869-1941) French Soprano, Actress and author.
