His mother was Elizabeth Gibson, of the famous Saffron Walden Quaker banking family, and the Midgleys and Gibsons were connected by family ties and shared interests as well as religion. Arthur Midgley was one of those intriguing Victorian figures of a man of substantial independent means, well-travelled and well versed in science and the arts, without any profession, and given over to public service, philanthropy and good causes. Apart from his philanthropic work on a number of national charities, Arthur Midgley was a local Justice of the Peace, town councillor, Secretary of the Saffron Walden Hospital, a Poor Law Guardian, and Chairman of the Boys' British School Managers. He was also a prominent Quaker.
