A good George III Mahogany bowfront Stick Barometer, signed J Ramsden, London, circa 1790, concealed mercury tube with a single silvered dial, signed, well figured trunk with urn shaped cistern cover, L 100 cm. Jesse Ramsden (b1731-d1800) is known to be one of the greatest instrument makers of all time. His outstanding invention was a dividing machine for accurate scale division and was credited with adapting the tripod as a carrying case for the mountain barometer. Mid-20th century mercury stick barometer and an early 20th century aneroid wheel barometer. Mahogany stick barometer with a broken pediment and brass finial, silvered register with engraved predictions and vernier, unenclosed bulb cistern tube with mercury present. Carved oak aneroid barometer with an 8” porcelain dial, predictions, and a boxed mercury thermometer above, steel indicating and recording hands within a brass bezel with a flat beveled glass.

Condition Report: - Please note that this lot is not suitable for our in-house postage service.We would recommend booking a collection slot for this lot or contacting Mailboxes Etc for postage of this lot, their details can be found on https://www.adampartridge.co.uk/services/transport/Meyer & Co barometer: the mercury tube wooden cap is missing the right-hand section, with a further split visible to the lower fixing screw, just to the right-hand side of the mercury tube. The retaining clip also appears to be broken. The Edwardian barometer: fading to the case, with losses to the finish visible throughout. Overall, both examples appear to be in ok condition.
A Victorian Anderson of Gravesend rosewood stick barometer, height 92cm A marine or travelling barometer without the gimbal fittings. Mercury level appears over-filled and unable to see exact level; vernier adjustment knob lacking; bone dial with two dark cracks; one securing pin lacking at dial; brass cistern cover modified. The cistern cover does fit the bottom of the barometer but doesn't stay in place when pushed.
A fine Regency mahogany cased stick barometer, by Charles Porta, London, circa 1810, with a silvered face, engraved scale from ‘Stormy’ to ‘Very Dry’, with sliding vernier scale, a thermometer offset to the side, and signed ‘Chas Porta, London’, in a case with ‘break arch’ pediment, the body with chequered inlays, over a turned reservoir cover. 98cm high (Care: Contains Mercury. Leave upright at all times)
