A George III inlaid mahogany spinet signed John Broadwood & Son, London The rectangular hinged cover with a fall front, 93cm keyboard above a signed panel John Broadwood & Son, London against a satinwood ground flanked by fret work panels above a moulded plinth, shaped apron raised upon tapering legs and spade feet with an incurved shelf complete with foot pedal, brass shoes and castors. 82x164x60cms. With a receipt from WF Greenwood & Sons, Harrogate 1954. (illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2322: The rectangular top hinged with two hinged front sections right hand side faded in relation to left hand side, some stain marks, surface scratching. Comes with a bill of sale 21.11.53 from W F Greenwood and Sons, Harrogate £450. Fret work inlay left and right hand side of John Broadwood plaque good condition. Stand would appear to be original to the top, would note the inlay around the top of the leg is a single piece of line inlay as apposed to the cabinet top is inlaid with ebony and boxwood line inlays. No breaks to legs, no visible worm, most of the notes play with the exception of about four, completely out of turn. Wires generally that some appear stretched, cabinet in good condition.
A matched Meissen set of the Five Senses 19th/20th century, after the models by Schönheit, each of a lady seated with various attributes, Sight with a mirror on her dressing table, Hearing playing a spinet, Smell lifting a flower to her nose from a basket beside her, Touch reaching out her hand to a bird in a cage, and Taste putting a pastry to her mouth from a table laden with food and drink, blue crossed swords marks, some faults, 13cm. A bentside spinet by Thomas Hancock, London, 1732, the casework veneered in walnut, the lid solid walnut with shaped and engraved brass strap hinges, mitred tail, the soundboard surround and jackrail veneered with walnut with ebony and holly stringing and ash crossbanding, the key well similarly veneered, the five octave keyboard, GG to g3, with arcaded ivory naturals and ebony and ivory skunk-tailed accidentals, with brass stringing, on later trestle stand with turned legs. Inscribed on the name batten Thomas Hancock London and on the GG key shaft 1732. Length 6ft 3?in, 192cm. Provenance The Trustees of the Lady Margaret Spicer's Deed of Settlement. Purchased by Christopher Hogwood at the Christie's sale on 8th May 1975 (lot 84). The Boalch3 entry erroneously states that the sale was at Sotheby's and places the date at 1723. It also confuses this instrument with another spinet by Thomas Hancock which was indeed sold by Sotheby's on 13th November 1987. English School circa 1790 Portrait of a boy, half length, wearing a green coat and white shirt, seated at a spinet, holding a music score bears initial lower right "B" (possibly for "Barton") oil on canvas 61 x 68cm (24 x 27in) Provenance: S. Lewis Esq., his Sale, London, Bonhams, 9 July 1992, lot 74, where acquired by the late owner. From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE The maker of the Spinet has been identified as Thomas Barton in the opinion of the late owner; the Concerto is believed to be by Thomas Arne. The present painting was used as a Christmas card by Christopher Hogwood. Relined. Old inscription on the stretcher "Lady Wade ?".
