On the processes of colour photography LUMIERE AUGUSTE: (1862-1954) French Inventor who, with his brother Louis, were the first filmmakers in history, creating moving pictures in 1895. A good A.L.S., Augte. Lumiere, four pages, 8vo, Lyon, 19th January 1894, to [Gaston Tissandier], in French. Lumiere announces 'We are embarrassed to have sent you our request for two copies of "La Nature". We should have contacted the printer and not caused you any inconvenience, but since the fault is ours we must present our apologies and our deepest thanks' and continues 'We are very hard-pressed to give you any information about colour photography by the interference method other than that which has already been published either by Mr. Lippmann or by ourselves in the Photogazette of 25th May 1893', further explaining 'Changes made recently to the process described relate only to the nature and intensity of the pigments used to increase the sensitivity of silver bromide to less refractive rays, or indeed….to the colour of the screen destined to absorb overly active radiations. The great difficulty, as you know, consists of the creation and orthochromatisation of the sensitive preparation; whereby on carrying out the operation twice in conditions as identical as possible, one does not obtain….silver salt, in the two cases, of the same sensitivity to various coloured rays; such that the screen and the sensitivity must vary somewhat; hence the impossibility in which we find ourselves, being unable to be precise. These differences in the results are the subject of our research and when we have determined their causes it will be possible to be more specific'. Lumiere concludes by thanking his correspondent for their interest in the work of himself and his brother. A letter of excellent content relating to the pioneering work the Lumiere brothers conducted into colour photography. A few tape stains, most predominantly to the first page, only very slightly affecting the date and not the main body of text or signature, otherwise VG Gaston Tissandier (1843-1899) French Aviator and Chemist. In parallel with their cinema work, the Lumiere brothers experimented with colour photography. As illustrated in the present letter, they worked on a number of colour photographic processes in the 1890s including the Lippmann process (interference heliochromy) and their own 'bichromated glue' process. In 1903 the Lumiere's patented a colour photographic process, the 'Autochrome Lumiere'. Edmund Oscar von Lippmann (1857-1940) German Chemist.
