Hermann Max Pechstein (1881 Zwickau - 1955 Berlin) (F)'Schwermuth', Öl auf Leinwand, 65 cm x 65,5 cm, monogrammiert, 1910 datiert, verso signiert, 'Schwermuth' betitelt, mit Preisangabe 300 versehen, Leinwand leicht gewellt, partiell Farbabplatzer, partiell leicht craqueliert, Rückseite übertüncht mit weißer Farbe, verso partiell craqueliert, Farbabplatzer, kunsthistorisches Gutachten anbei, Literatur: WVZ. Soika 1910/71, mit farb. Abb. Hermann Max Pechstein (1881 Zwickau - 1955 Berlin) (F)'Schwermuth', oil on canvas, 65 cm x 65,5 cm, monogrammed, dated 1910, signed on the reverse, titled 'Schwermuth', with price 300, canvas slightly wavy, paint chipped in places, slightly craquelured in places, backside covered with white paint, verso partly craquelured, paint chipped, art-historical certificate enclosed, literature: WVZ. Soika 1910/71, with col. Fig. p. 283, Provenance: Probably Dr. Ludwig Schrader and Bettina Schrader-Eschershausen, Hamburg; private collection, Karlsruhe; private collection, Hanover. In a private collection in Hanover we discovered the painting "Schwermuth" by the well-known expressionist painter Hermann Max Pechstein, marked "whereabouts unknown" in the catalogue raisonné. It shows a centrally positioned young woman framing her head, which is tilted to the side, with her arms. She ties back her dark hair with a midnight blue scarf, which she lets fall over her shoulder. Her face is free, her eyelids are lowered and her lips are emphasised. Here, too, Pechstein applied his typical colour palette with a coarse brush. Except for the brown-reddish stripe on the right side of the picture, the foreground and background of the picture almost blend into each other with blue-greenish and ochre tones. Yet, on the one hand, he succeeds in enlivening the model by means of a moving ductus, and on the other hand, the picture's melancholy atmosphere is transferred to the viewer and casts a spell over him. The lady portrayed could be "Lotte" (Charlotte) Kaprolat (1893 - 1955), whom Pechstein met in 1908 in the studio of fellow artist Georg Kolbe and later married. It would be an early work of the love affair. The catalogue raisonné also includes the oil painting Schwermuth, 1910/ 71 and the comparative sketch of a postcard to Curt Glaser from 1912. These also correspond to the woodcut Schwermuth, 1912, which can be found in Günther Krüger's catalogue raisonné (under WVZ no. H 158). An art historical expert opinion is enclosed with the work.
