Ca. 1368-1644 AD, or later.A moulded terracotta figure depicting a rider on horseback, with the animal shown in a standing pose atop of a flat, integral base. The horse's neck stretches forward, and its tail is depicted in a loose, flowing manner. The animal's mane is neatly arranged and glazed in green, a popular color during the Ming period that was often used to indicate status and wealth. The horse's trappings, including the bridle, saddle blanket, and breeching, are all moulded in the round and colored in a green glaze. The rider is depicted wearing a cap and a green garment that is modeled with remarkable attention to detail. This figure is an example of mingqi, or tomb figurines, which were commonly used in the Ming Dynasty to provide the deceased with a retinue of servants, soldiers, and officials in the afterlife. Size: L:380mm / W:270mm ; 2.47kg Provenance: East Anglian private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.
