Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "Lightning/Golden Age of Sail" Titled lower left. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Golden Age of Sail Collection Lightning porcelain plate. Pounding feet shook the rigging as agile men leaped for the high yards. White sails fell in ordered folds to tauten in the morning wind, curving between the golden yards. Fore-and-afters sang aloft with a jangle of hanks. The main deck swarmed with hearty sailors heaving and hauling as yellow cordage snaked through a hundred blocks. Such were the sights and sounds as the Lightning began another race against time. Crafted and designed by renowned shipwright Donald McKay, the Lightning held the distinction of being the first American-made ship built for the English merchant marine. With decidedly concave lines, the Lightning was sharper than any clipper before her. This ship was built for speed. On her maiden voyage in 1854, the Lightning astounded the maritime world by traveling 436 miles in only 24 hours. This world record made the Lightning the swiftest ship that ever sailed the seas. No other ship of the time could come within 100 miles of her mark. Not until some 30 years later did another ship break her record, and it was powered by steam. Image Size: 22.5 x 25.5 in. Overall Size: 25 x 27 in. Unframed. (B07008)
