Inc.) was founded in 1919, a joint venture between Edmund Jaeger from Jaeger-LeCoultre and Cartier, with the intention of producing mechanisms exclusively for Cartier wrist and pocket watches. At the time, JLC were the leaders in innovative watch movement manufacturing.Cartier were jewellers rather than watchmakers, and although they worked with other movement manufacturers such as Vacheron & Constantin, Movado and Audemars Piguet, many of their premier items featured EWC movements, built at the Jaeger-LeCoultre factory in Le Sentier Switzerland.This is a particularly fine and rare example, featuring an extremely slim movement, even by today’s standards.Crystal - In good condition. A very, very minor grizzle at the edge between 11 and 12 o'clock, visible under 10x magnification.Dial - In good condition with no apparent damage or deterioration. Some very, very minor spotting under 10x magnification. Some very minor dust specks trapped under the crystal.Movement - Appears to be in working order but has not been tested for timekeeping. Crown engages and disengages as it should, and the hands move freely in both directions. Hallmarks clear and crisp.Case - Minor surface scratches commensurate with wear. Spring for the front cover a little tired and the front cover does not stay open at full 90 degree to the dial. release catch positive, but the plunger needs to be depressed to close the dial, rather than a traditional 'snap shut'.

In fact, Gay Frères are responsible for a number of iconic watch bracelets, having designed, in collaboration with the respective watch houses, Rolex’s Oyster bracelet, Audemar Piguet’s Royal Oak bracelet, and Patek Philippe’s Nautilus bracelet.Alongside its watch bracelets, the company has always produced jewellery, and has supplied to houses such as Van Cleef & Arpels, FRED, and Hermès, as well as selling under it's own name. Gay Frères designs of the 60s and 70s are particularly collectible, and appear on the market fairly infrequently. Audemars Piguet first introduced this reference 25572 to the market in 1983. It has the double calendar function for the date and day of the week. Due to the dial layout and with the sub dials positioned at a horizontal axis, these watches are now referred to by collectors as "The Owl". The executions of reference 25572 comes in two form types. The first type 1 layout shows the hands and hour markers having a slender stick form. The type 2 version like the present lot shows the hour and minute hands and hour markers of a rounded baton shape. At 36mm and only 7.5mm thick it retains the classic Royal Oak proportions and could be seen as a scaled down 5402, also taking on a number of the same design cues.
