Pigeon breeding.- [Dinsdale (Joshua)] The Dove-Cote: or, the art of breeding pigeons, a poem, first edition, title with woodcut floral ornament, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initial, title with some staining and a small chip at foot, occasional spotting, lightly browned, 19th century morocco-backed marbled boards, spine gilt, rubbed, [Foxon D315], 8vo, Printed for Joseph Davidson, at the Angel, in the Poultry, 1740.⁂ A scarce poem which provides a practical guide to the housing, care, feeding and breeding of doves and pigeons. Attributed to Dinsdale by the conjunction of date, publisher, and subject. The Modern art of breeding bees, a poem, was published by Davidson in the same year with Dinsdale's name on the title (cf. Foxon). Provenance: Edward Hailstone (1818-90), Yorkshire bibliophile. 'In 1871 Hailstone moved from Horton to Walton Hall, near Wakefield, where he lived as a recluse, savouring his library, which occupied the whole of the upper floor' (ODNB) (circular red leather armorial bookplate).
Asian calligraphic manuscript.- Compilation of 43 calligraphic drawings in miniature Ghubari script, title with a prayer to the Prophet Muhammad within ruled border of yellow and yellow and black decoration in the Chinoiserie style at head (probably from a different work), 43 calligraphic drawings on 22 leaves, each within gold decorative Chinoiserie border (some incomplete), the first and last depicting a vase of flowers, others with one of the names of God, browned and stained, later limp cloth, stitched, 4to (295 x 211mm.), Probably China or S.E. Asia, 19th century.Saleroom notice: the text is printed not manuscript⁂ According to Sheila Blair, "Ghubar is derived from naskhi script, and its minuscule letters are usually less than 3 mm., often as small as 1.3 mm. Ghubar script is said to have been invented to write messages carried by pigeon post, but calligraphers in Iran came soon to use it in other ways, notably for amulets, talismans, and even entire copies of the Qur'an" see Islamic Calligraphy, Edinburgh, 2006, pp.259-260.

A George III Mahogany Bureau, late 18th century, the fall front enclosing a fitted interior of small drawers and pigeon holes around a central cupboard door, four graduated drawers below with later brasses and escutcheons, on bracket feet, 96cm by 51cm by 107cm CONDITION REPORT: Varnished finish. The left-hand side panel with some splits. The right-hand side panel also with some splits. The varnish has gone off and with a very small split visible on the right side of the fall. The interior with split/repair around the hinges and on the flat writing surface below the cupboard door. Section of timber replaced above the lock. Drawer fronts with faults to the cock beading and a large scuff to the bottom-second drawer which has been partly filled. Right-hand panel also split and with a large section of timber patched. Later brasses and escutcheons.
A George I Burr Yewwood Veneered and Mahogany Sided Secretaire Chest, early 18th century, the moulded top above a deep fall front drawer enclosing a fitted interior of small drawers and pigeon holes around a central cupboard door, three deep drawers below, on bracket feet, 96cm by 52cm by 104cm CONDITION REPORT: The timber is rather dry particularly to the top section which has various splits with some small veneer losses. Side panels are mahogany and the drawers are pine lined. The secretaire drawer with old repair to the cupboard door around the escutcheon. Some veneer missing to the front section above the left bracket foot and also above the right bracket foot. End panels also have some splits.

Cushioned leather and binding with heavy embossed design and gilt lettering, the album contains 12 fine plates of various famous historical battle scenes by Captain Bunnett, 30 x 23 cm.
