'The Piping Fawn' a rare Carter Stabler & Adams Poole Pottery faience roundel designed by Phoebe Stabler, originally designed 1914, modelled in relief with a piping fawn, the rim a frieze of flowers and foliage, in colours painted Carter, Stabler & Adams Poole England to reverse, 38.5cm. diam. Provenance The Redstone Collection. Literature Designs in Modern Industry The Yearbook of the Design & Industries Association, 1922, page 55 for a comparable example illustrated. Jennifer Hawkins The Poole Potteries, Barrie & Hawkins, page 124 for an example of this plaque mounted on the outside wall of Stellawood house, John Adams house in Broadstone. Royal Doulton Blue Glaze Figure of The Madonna of The Square by Phoebe Stabler, a colour variation of this figure, which did not go into production, was made between 1928-1930, and shows the figure fully covered, including face and hands, in a French blue glaze; we believe the figure offered for a sale is a blue prototype glaze and that this figure may be the only one in this total blue colour to exist. Marked with impressed numbering 83 /7.27 and Royal Doulton to base (no HN number or reference to Phoebe Stabler). Mint condition.A point of reference:In November 2012 a Royal Doulton Spook figure of a similar blue prototype glaze, with a lustre finish, was sold at Gerrards Auction Rooms for £4250 plus premium. This event was televised by the BBC programme 'Flog It'.
