J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "West Virginia Locomotive" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States West Virginia Commemorative Cover postmarked January 29, 1995. West Virginia's introduction to rail transportation was the result of an expansion of the Virginia Central Railroad. The Civil War had halted the progress of the railway to the point that Virginia Central workers were forced to pull up portions of their own track to obtain supplies for the maintenance of other sections. However, by 1865 the entire line was back in service. Three years later, the Virginia Central merged with the Covington & Ohio, becoming the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad (C&O). In 1869 it came under the control of California railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington, builder of both the Central Pacific and Southern Pacific lines. On January 29, 1873, the route from Richmond, Virginia, to the Ohio River (near the West Virginia/Kentucky border) was completed. The western terminus of this route was the newly-formed city of Huntington, named for its founder. During West Virginia's early years of statehood, this railway provided one of the biggest boons to the state's economy. It prompted the mining of coal from the lower walls of the mineral-rich canyon it traversed and ended a century-long search for a more accessible route across southern West Virginia. Pictured on this handsome artwork is C&O engine No. 204. This 2-8-0, known as a "Consolidation" type, was built by Richmond Locomotive in 1890. Ivo Hauptmann 1960, ungerahmt. - Landschafts-, Stilleben- und Figurenmaler, Sohn des Nobelpreisträgers Gerhart Hauptmann. H. begann sein Studium 1903 an der Académie Julian in Paris, wo er auch die Ateliers von Maillol, Bonnard, Denis und Vuillard besuchte. Er setzte seinen Unterricht an der Kunstschule Lewin-Funcke in Berlin fort, sein Lehrer dort war L. Corinth. 1904-08 folgte ein Studium an der Weimarer Akademie bei H. Olde sowie als Meisterschüler von L. von Hofmann. Dort schloß er Freundschaft mit H. Arp, H. van de Velde und E. Munch; O. Mueller kannte er bereits aus Dresden. 1909-12 war er wiederum in Paris und freundete sich mit P. Signac an, mit dem zusammen er 1911 auch beim Salon des Indépendants ausstellte. H. lebte in der Folge abwechselnd in Hamburg, Dresden und Berlin, wo er zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der Freien Sezession gehörte. Nachdem er sich endgültig in Hamburg niedergelassen hatte, trat er 1927 auch der dortigen Sezession bei. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg war H. Dozent an der Landeskunstschule in Hamburg, zudem bis 1965 Vizepräsident der Freien Akademie der Künste. Hettner und wurde Meisterschüler von O. Kokoschka. Zusammen mit Hilde Goldschmidt studierte er 1926/27 an der Académie Colarossi in Paris. Auf eine Reise in die USA folgten längere Studienaufenthalte in Paris, Italien und München. Nach dem Krieg, in dem er fast sein gesamtes Oeuvre verlor, ließ er sich in St. Peter-Ording an der Nordsee nieder. 1949-51 unterrichtete er am von A. Fiedler in Hamburg gegründeten 'Baukreis'. 1971 wurde er zum Professor ernannt, im selben Jahr erfolgte die Gründung der F.-K.-Gotsch-Stiftung.
