In dark black fountain pen ink Orff has penned several bars of music, with words ('O Fortuna, velut luna') beneath, from O Fortuna, a movement in Orff's cantata Carmina Burina (1935-36). BOSCO JOHN: (1815-1888) Don Bosco. Italian Roman Catholic Priest, Educator and Writer. He developed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment, a method known as the Salesian Preventive System. Founder of the Salesians of Don Bosco. Canonized as a saint in 1934. Rare A.L.S., Sac.[erdote] Bosco Gio[vanni], one page, 8vo, Torino, 23rd July 1866, to Signore Cesare, in Italian. Bosco states in part `Elle è sempre un buon segretaro perchè scrive sempre cose buone utili vantaggiose. Grazie adunque della limosina che Maman si dispone di fare e fa in mille franchi per la costruzione del pulpito. Spero che Maria ausiliatrice non istarà in dietro a Maman in generosità´ (“He is always a good secretary because he always writes good, useful and advantageous things. Thanks, therefore, for the alms that Maman is about to make, and makes of an amount of a thousand francs for the construction of the pulpit. I hope that Mary help of Christians will not be behind Maman in generosity”) Further John Bosco states and amusingly comments referring to planets `Prima che termini questo mese porterò il mille franchi a sua casa come mi scrive e farò in modo di portare altrettanti napoleoni ma tutti col capo scoperto. Perché se portassi insiemi così quanta napoleoni col cappello in testa, forse metterebbero in combustione fin Giove, Saturno e Marte etc. Before the end of this month, I will bring the thousand francs to her as you write to me and I will make sure to bring as many Napoleons but all with their heads uncovered. Because if I was taking with me many Napoleons with hats on their heads, maybe they would set fire to Jupiter, Saturn and Mars etc. As soon as they will return, I hope to be able to personally revere them in Casale or Vignale. I assure you, however, that I recommend them all here, especially in the Holy Mass. May the grace of the Lord assist him.... - Amen”) Small overall minor age wear and creasing, otherwise G Countess Carlotta Callori di Vignale (1827-1911) one of the most important financial benefactors of Bosco´s projects. Bosco considered Countess Callori as his second-mother and often addressed to her as `Mia Buona Mamma´. In 1871 John Bosco founded a group of religious sisters to do for girls what the Salesians were doing for boys. They were called the ''Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.''
On Sharon Tate and her attempted assassination of Gerald R. Ford – ‘If I had wanted to kill the man, he’d be dead’ FROMME LYNETTE: (1948- ) American Criminal, a member of the infamous Manson Family who was imprisoned for her attempted assassination of American President Gerald R. Ford in 1975. An extraordinary, lengthy A.L., unsigned (although 'signed' L. Squeaky F. within the text), eight pages, 4to, n.p., 13th October n.y., to Charles Manson ('Dear Charlie'). Fromme writes to her friend following her appearance in a two-part television interview and states, in part, 'It wasn't bad at all. It was good. The next one of course may be. But this one I just talked about little life things and said well life & death merge in the universe when he asked about death - and after it was over they called me a scary little girl. And she seems so right & how could her values be distorted so much. I said where's Jerry Rubin after he told all the kids to kill their parents? Everyone shouted for Revolution - I made a fist (& this is what I was scared about) & said “Revolution was in the Tate house. Revolution is dead babies everywhere”. That could easily be misunderstood as we wanted that even tho if any one had eyes, I was starting to cry. The last thing I said in this part (he cut it) was: I want Manson heard. I was shot up from below. I look pale & a little fat around the cheeks & tired eyes - but not all that bad. Another thing I was wondering - I was still wearing my red hat. I do now not as often because I need a pin for it but is that alright? I don't know why I said the fist was in the Tate house & everybody ran from it. One finger was in the Tate house. I sure am relieved…..I guess you & Blue were right…..On the change of colors - I've still been red. I didn't want to give up green…..The news commentators, by the way, after interview said “Well it's surely something to make you question”. Tomorrow's will be all the bad stuff - the stuff about family show killing an old movie & us being like predators and that the Tate murder was “perfect”. That really upset the guy & rather than telling about the killing of earth I just said it needs to be explained by the whole family and I threw it back on family again because I felt it was too much at the time…..Today I was answering his questions about the past & he wanted to know how I feel now about what I've done. And I could've said all kinds of good things but I laughed & said “What have I done?” And he said about Pres[ident Ford] & I said I'll tell you this - If I had wanted to kill the man, he'd be dead. Then he asked if I regretted anything in my life & if I'd do the same if I had it to do over. I said that I'd be on the corner of Temple & Broadway. Does that tell people/kids to go there? I wasn't on top of my thoughts……And the worst part is when my mind was spinning to find some words to say much in a short time & he asked - do you ever doubt - and w/o a thought I answered “Oh I've had doubts all my life but….” & suddenly I snapped…..& I said oh no - & then he asked me the question again & I said “I know blab la bla”……Also I had big photos of you on my locker beside redwood trees and whales……And later he asked if I thought I was crazy & I said what kind of insane mind would create a giraffe & he didn't understand. And he asked if others here thought I was crazy and I could've said good things but I said no. And I said I don't care what they think. I was just told that Rolling Stone magazine has a hold of a manuscript I wrote about ranch and is asking my approval to publish…..I have had thoughts of both Rolling Stone & someone trying to sell portions of my book - just this week. And since I've been working on Ranch portion - especially - I may just go that way w/ stipulation I can make a book…..I got a letter from you today and I'm so happy to get this motion picture. The ones we had I don't have here. This is beautiful……I saw the second part of interview today, it wasn't bad. I forget the last thing they showed but when I said I respected respect & my family they showed film of us on the corner and with bald heads. Some not so good shots of you. But also the picture of you on locker with long hair & beard. I think the last thing I said today was people judge themselves. They mentioned the people's court today too. And showed film pictures of Blue…..I told B to get her tapes out - the ones she got 15 years for. They're good. The T.V. guy said for people to look & see if they can see what's going on in the unpredictable illogical mind of L. Squeaky F - I tried to change the name but didn't succeed…..The guy said - I can't see how all the life you're talking about has anything to do w/ murder - I don't understand…and I said - well let's find out. (I could've said - That's you if you don't - or that's how far my family could go - one way or the other). Anyway - I just got new letter from you…..Does it take me away from myself to be a spot in your thinking. I've wanted you to be free of me whoever me is - any b.s. competition etc. and I had a thought you could have a me & bee & all of us w/o the rest of the ego b.s. because you have what you want coming. The rest of us have made what we've made & have that coming but on the other side will we not know no end to the thought we once lived in? Oh - now you say that you do have us - like I thought. And you love your lonely. And I live with the fact that I let you be taken away…..You know I want you to stay and also to do as you want. I wonder how much we have to do with your feelings and if my will to stay changes anything. I don't want to play hopes - I see the ranch story can say a lot that is in each of us…..I hoped that you could have the earth at peace - and that no matter what happened to us you would have the kids & they'd have themselves. I have laughed sometimes because I know that you have so much good coming……It just doesn't keep me from knowing how rotten we've been as humans - & I think of what you said years ago - if ever there was a devil on the face of the earth, I am he/she it - something like that. I've got a lot to do now and trying to hook up with Blue. I wonder if you got gold letter and Indian letter. I'll tell him you can't write. You seen Nixon's man John Dean telling all their secrets for rolling stone magazine. He wrote & said Earl Butts said there's only 3 things black people want “tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit” Dean said Pat Boone was there too. Crazy huh - HUH I think you're angry when you say HUH to me. Always here's red & blue in the spectrum. I love and see to be the drawing in reflection. P.S. What if I call my book Charles Manson Died in Reform School. Or what about “I lived 3 years with a Dead Man”. Sounds familiar doesn't it - sure took me a long space in time to come to it. PS Can I call us all by our names…..My answer is yes.' A letter of interesting content and association. VG
FROMME LYNETTE: (1948- ) American Criminal, a member of the infamous Manson Family who was imprisoned for her attempted assassination of American President Gerald R. Ford in 1975. A.L.S., with her initial R ['Red' being her name within the Manson Family], four pages, 4to, n.p., n.d., to [Charles Manson]. Fromme writes a social letter to her friend, in part, 'Well first - let me say what I see - Everyone who thinks beyond this step is in a hurry. We work that way as humans and sometimes we can go pretty fast in tune but each has their own pace. Now about the Zee. She has good rhythm or pace, can handle a lot…..she's a lot like me. I also know that her being willing is not the only consideration - I don't like Mel much and I told him so with a smile, but for real. I said that you seem to like him and I'll go w/ your viewpoint any time but that you're the one who showed me about word as I learned it in myself……Almost everyone lies. You gotta lie to live out there…….[Mel] don't give a damn about you. If Zee hadn't got a loan from Grandma you wouldn't have Xmas boxes and you may not care about that but we do. Mel didn't care. He offered it, said he could send around Dec 15 and then waited til way after the boxes needed to be sent to send ½. I told him I wouldn't expect him to offer money unless he was willing to go without food & toothpaste to get it there. And I asked him how he'd feel if he was in prison and owed someone $ and his family didn't send it. So I'm prepared to deal with him but only on my own terms. And I would not have Zee dependent on him or anyone. In 6 mos she can have a sort of passport to get her places…..and things seem to be lining up nice for a trip to Ca…….she would only be an unwanted visitor in every place without her passport which is really her credibility in that world - a document that shows she started something & finished it…..she can get a job working with kids wherever she goes if she needs it and on her love…….Zee is straddling 2 worlds and she can handle it but like anyone she can use a face and she's been through all that school shit and made the list of top of the class and knows what she wants. I never met anyone like her…….If she's to see you she will know w/o a doubt and take each step on her own. If she questions, she'll sit down and ask herself and the truth will come……Holly (Bucky's “mom”) has given both her boys a lot of faith in themselves - doesn't push them. That's why her young fellow is still w/ her, she got a 30 yr. old guy, and they're going on what you left last time. He says I showed him contempt when I met him on corner and I can't remember him but he's got some spunk and some understanding also. I like what he says even when mad…..' In one of two postscripts Fromme also remarks 'I got mad that Mr. Raccus said he didn't mean to kill that chicken. If he didn't mean to he wouldn't have. He knows what he's doing'. Two small tears to the right edge of the second leaf, otherwise VG
SCHILLER FRIEDRICH: (1759-1805) German Poet, Philosopher and Playwright. An extremely rare fragment of an autograph manuscript, unsigned, two pages, slim oblong 12mo, n.p., n.d. (1804-05), in German. The text, apparently unpublished and with several corrections, is from Schiller's translation of Phedre and states, `O wird mir solcher Dank für meine Liebe? Verdammliches Verwegenes Erkühnen Freche That! Verdammliches Erkühnen! Und seiner frevelhaften wilden Lust zu büßen genug zu thun, Erlaubte sich der Freche gar Gewalt!´ further writing, to the verso, `Think of my Queen's complaints - O Lord! From a wicked love - all her hate arisen - Theseus´. Some light overall age wear and with very slightly irregularly trimmed edges, about G In the winter of 1804-05 Schiller was suffering from pain and spasms of pneumonia and the only literary work he could undertake was a translation of Jean Racine's dramatic tragedy Phedre, which had first been performed in 1677. The present fragment was one of a number excised from the original manuscript shorty after Schiller's death and presented to admirers as a keepsake of the poet.

Hart thanks his correspondent for a journal which he has found very interesting, further adding 'I hope your O[ld] C[heltonians] dinner was a success. It is only through the energy & zeal of you, two secretaries & Hunter that O.C's keep together at all'. In concluding Hart states that he would like if possible to go to Cheltenham on the 1st November. Rare. Some very minor, small traces of former mounting to the verso of the final page, otherwise VG Hart had been educated at Cheltenham College before being commissioned in the Royal Engineers.
