Ivon Hitchens (British, 1893-1979)Forest: O Hurry to the Ragged Wood signed 'Hitchens' (lower right); further signed, inscribed and dated 'Forest. 'O hurry to the ragged wood,'/1971/by IVON HITCHENS/PETWORTH. SUSSEX.' (on a label attached to the stretcher)oil on canvas51.4 x 105.4 cm. (20 1/4 x 41 1/2 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Jonathan Clark & Co., LondonPrivate Collection, U.K.ExhibitedLondon, Waddington Galleries, Ivon Hitchens: Retrospective Exhibition, 16 May-9 June 1973, cat.no.30LiteratureAlan Bowness, Ivon Hitchens, Lund Humphries, London, 1973, p.112As he painted the present work, Hitchens approached his 80th year. He had enjoyed a long and lauded career and his position as one of Britain's dearest modern painters had been confirmed by a major retrospective staged at the Tate in 1963. He continued to paint with fervour into his final decade, with a fresh influence arising from the purchase of a house at Selsey Bill. This coastal property, approximately twenty miles south from his rambling twenty-four-acre woodland estate near Petworth, introduced a vibrancy to Hitchens' palette more riotous than employed in his painting hitherto. There are several themes which dominate the works from this period, among them a group of pictures which employ musical references. Hitchens had long used musical rhetoric to discuss painting, and as early as 1933 stated that he strived to paint the 'musical appearance of things'. In the later years a gramophone was positioned in the corner of his studio to play his wide and varied record collection as he worked (with opera being a particular favourite). His wife Mollie played piano beautifully, which could occasionally be heard from the house nearby. Although a longstanding influence for Hitchens, musical references became more direct in his late paintings, such as the series titled Boat and Foliage in Five Chords. A similar, although less prevalent, influence of this period can be traced to Hitchens's enjoyment of poetry. He kept a much-marked copy of Shelley by his bed and would quote Tennyson when the occasion called. The present work is one such example, taking its title from the first line of the final stanza of W.B. Yeats's 1904 poem The Ragged Wood. A tale of mismatched love, it concludes: O hurry to the ragged wood, for thereI will drive all those lovers out and cry O, my share of the world, O, yellow hair!No one has ever loved but you and I. Yeats's woodland setting will have likely appealed to Hitchens's sensibilities, and he painted another work by the title O Hurry Where by Water Among Trees, taken from the poem's first line.We are grateful to Peter Khoroche for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Tristram Hillier R.A. (British, 1905-1983)Selsey Bill signed 'Hillier' (lower left)oil on panel22.6 x 35.6 cm. (8 7/8 x 14 in.)Painted in 1945Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Arthur Tooth & Sons, London, 2 May 1948, where acquired by Colonel F. BarkerHenry Luce III and Claire Booth Luce, thence by descentPrivate Collection, Vermont, U.S.A.ExhibitedLondon, Arthur Tooth & Sons, Paintings by Tristram Hillier, 7 May-1 June 1946, cat.no.28The present work was included in Hillier's exhibition at Arthur Tooth & Son's Bruton Street gallery in summer of 1946. This exhibition, the artist's first with Tooth's, had been slated for 1940 but was delayed due to the war. Many of the works selected for inclusion had to be abandoned by Hillier as he fled from his Normandy studio. Subsequently, these paintings had to be rescued and transported to London at great pains, as it transpired just in time with troops ransacking the Hillier house not long after. The delay to the exhibition resulted in an opportunity for Hillier to showcase the scope of development across the years since his Lefevre exhibition of 1933. Together it grouped a select number of Surrealist compositions such as Variations on the Form of an Anchor (1939, Tate Gallery) with a larger number of dazzling continental scenes such as The Lighthouse (1939, sold in these rooms on 23 November 2016 for £106,250). Hillier also included several recent English scenes in the exhibition, such as the present work, The Forsaken Village (1944) and Lobster Pots (1945). Generally executed on a small scale and demonstrating finely laboured application, these views are all deserted, abandoned even, undoubtedly a reflection of the horrors which the continent had just witnessed. Hillier wrote of the Tooth show - 'My exhibition was as successful as I could have wished. All the pictures were sold, within a few days while the critics were in some cases complimentary and in others exceedingly abusive, so that their reactions were without exception gratifying' (Tristram Hillier, Leda and the Goose, Longmans, London, 1954, p.177).Colonel F. Barker, the works first owner, purchased several works by Hillier, including Étretat (1939), and Chapel at Zarza (1969, sold in these rooms on 22 November 2017).The Estate of Tristram Hillier is preparing a forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the Artist's paintings and would like to hear from owners of any works by Hillier. (50 x 60 1/4 in.)(unframed)Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Lemon Street Gallery, Truro, 2006, where acquired by the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.This work is drawn out in Hoyland's notebooks, and below it he writes 'Denis Bowen unsung hero' referencing the South African artist, gallery director and promoter of abstract art in Britain, and the title is likely a reference to Bowen's work which often featured moons and skyscapes with spheres. Hoyland painted other tributes to artists and friends, such as Souvenir for Patrick, (his friend Patrick Caulfield), Elegy for Terry (friend Terry Frost), Night Sky (for Vincent Van Gogh) and Master Weaver, Homage to Bryan Robertson. The Hoyland Estate are currently preparing the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the Artist's work and would like to hear from owners of any work by the Artist so that these can be included in this comprehensive catalogue. Lot 158

PANKHURST (EMMELINE)Autograph album containing the signatures of Emmeline Pankhurst ('Can man be free if woman be a slave?/ (Shelley)/ E. Pankhurst') and Ramsay Macdonald ('A man's a man for a' that/ J. Ramsay Macdonald') on the same page, together with leading members of the women's suffrage and socialist movement such as Ethel Annakin Snowden ('With kindest greetings/ Ethel Annakin Snowden'), Philip Snowden ('The man of independent mind is king of men'), social reformer and suffragist Isabella O. Ford, Nellie Alma Martel, Arthur Henderson, John J. Macpherson, John Hodge and others, c.68 leaves (34 blank), red calf gilt, worn, upper cover calf detached, loss to spine, small 8vo (100 x 160mm.), [c.1905-1906]Footnotes:'CAN MAN BE FREE IF WOMAN BE A SLAVE?': Album containing signatures of leading members of the women's suffrage, trade union and labour movements in Manchester collected by the daughter of Labour M.P. John Hodge. There is no ownership inscription in the album but internal evidence suggests it is likely to have belonged to Margaret Hodge, eldest daughter of Labour M.P. John Hodge (1855-1937). Hodge was an active supporter of the women's franchise movement and knew the leading lights of the WSPU in Manchester including the Pankhursts and Isabella Ford. In 1903 a deputation asked him him to introduce a women's franchise bill in parliament if he was successfully elected (see Reid, C. The Origins & Development of the Independent Labour Party in Manchester and Salford, 1880-1914, 1981, doctoral thesis online). Margaret's father's political connections would thus explain how she had access to the influential names represented here and she is known to have accompanied him to meetings, including to hear Churchill speak in July 1904 (Reid, p.907). According to the census, Margaret was 15 years old in 1901 and would therefore be around 20 or 21 when the book was signed, shortly after her father was elected M.P.Among the names gathered here are, notably, Emmeline Pankhurst, founder of the Women's Social and Political Union, who shares a page with future Prime Minister and then Secretary of the Labour Party Ramsay Macdonald, Ethel Snowden, a leading campaigner for women's suffrage and her husband Philip, the first Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer. Also included is Isabella Ormston Ford who was the first woman to speak at a Labour Representation Committee conference in 1903. The entries by the Snowdens and Isabella Ford are dated 20 February 1906, just five days after the Labour Representation Committee formally decided to adopt the name 'The Labour Party', and the day after the first march on the Commons organised by the WSPU and seen by Emmeline Pankhurst as the real beginning of the militant women's suffrage movement. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
