R.A.F. POLISH SQUADRON 303 SIGNED BOOK & ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS An astounding signed book: 'Squadron 303 The Polish Fighter Squadron with the R.A.F.', signed on the front flyleaf by twenty-one members of the famous squadron, extra-illustrated with 12 original photographs of squadron members, their aircraft, ground crews, etc. The book was written by Arkady Fiedler (1894-1985), a noted Polish writer and traveler who had joined the Polish Army at the outbreak of war. The book, 116pp. 8vo., was published in London by Peter Davies in August, 1942 and offers descriptions of the brave feats of various Polish members (their names changed) of 303 Squadron during the crucial Battle of Britain in late 1940. The book, bound in blue cloth, is complete with a slightly worn illustrated dust jacket. The front flyleaf is signed exclusively by Polish members of the R.A.F. and includes: JOZEF OSTROWSKI, 305 Sqn., later Polish liaison officer to RAF Fighter Command; ZYGMUNT WODECKI (b. 1909), 303 Squadron doctor; P/O LONGIN MAJEWSKI, (July 1941), Victoria Cross; P/O BRONISLAW KLOSIN (April 1941), P/O STANISLAW SOCHA (1942), Victoria Cross; ANTONI PULCZYNSKI (1914-1944), KIA; F/O STANISLAW PODOBINSKI (1943), KIA Dec. 4, 1943; F/O GUSTAW GWIZDALSKI (1897-1978); W/O M. WOJCIECHOWSKI (August 1940); F/L STEFAN BARAN (March 1942), P/O CZESLAW MROCZYK (July 1942), Victoria Cross, D.F.C.; F/O ANTONI GLOWACKI (November 1941), Victoria Cross, D.F.C., D.F.M.; P/O JERZY PALUSINSKI (August 1940), Victoria Medal; P/O BOLESLAW DROBINSKI (March 1941), Victoria Cross, D.F.C.; F/O JANUSZ MARCINIAK (July 1941), Victoria Cross, KIA June 23, 1944; F/O ZIBIGNIEW WOJDA (January 1941); F/Lt. STEFAN WITORZENC (May 1941), Victoria Cross, D.F.C.; F/O WOJCIECH KOLACZKOWSKI (December 1940), Victoria Cross, D.F.C.; F/O ANTONI KOLUBINSKI (June 1943), Victoria Cross, D.F.C.; SGT. MIECZYSLAW ADAMEK (Apr. 1941), KIA (317 Sqdn) May 18, 1944; and Sgt. TADEUSZ KOLECKI (July 1941), KIA Sep. 14, 1943. The owner of the volume, probably one of these flyers, neatly identified each of the signatures in block letters. The signed page bears a few tiny spots and marginal waviness and toning which do not substantially detract. Eleven original photographs of various sizes are mounted within the book (with an additional loose image), and they depict aircraft in flight, various squadron members in flight gear, aircraft, men scrambling; prayers in a hangar, a pilot showing 13 'kills' painted on his fuselage, the squadron flag, and a section of the 178th German aircraft destroyed by the squadron. A superb relic, accompanied by a voluminous amount of research.

Three pieces, very good.
Lot of two war-date letters from Union Colonel Theodoric F. C. Dodd, a member of the 73rd Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company B. Dodd writes to his wife Eliza, whom he refers to as ‘Lida’ in his letters. The first letter is 4pp. 4to., Louisville, Oct. 16, 1862, in part: ‘...On October 1, we were ordered to leave Louisville. We took up our line of march towards the interior of the state...following up Gen. Bragg who commanded his retreat as soon as Buell had given him time to supply himself with winter forage!!...We accidentally got too close to Bragg at Perryville and he gave us a severe battle...I cannot escape the conviction that the conduct of this war is in very unsafe hands...The men are put on half rations in a state abounding in all the luxuries of life and also abounding in Rebels of the darkest, most contemptable size. One man died today out of our regiment from exhaustion....We marched all day and all night over a hot and dusty turnpike and about 4 o’ clock in the morning I fell out and was arrested!!!!...A few days ago General Crittenden (God bless him) told General Buell (God curse him!) that he was a traitor!...Bragg and Buell came into Ky. together...Bragg stopped 28 miles from Louisville and commenced foraging and recruiting...Buell came to Louisville and received a reinforcement almost double his previous number. He kept this force at Louisville until Bragg had foraged to his hearts content...Buell then started in pursuit of Bragg...but has not caught him yet!!...You have heard long’ere I suppose of the battle at Cave Springs and Perryville. It was a bloody affair. Our regiment done nothing but look on...I must ask you again Lida to be very careful of your health. You can be careful, I can’t...’ The second letter, 4pp. 8vo., Nashville, Tennessee, Dec. 19, 1862, reads in part: ‘...I have been almost overwhelmed with your sweet letters for a couple of days...When I arrived in Nashville...I was a pretty sick boy with typhoid fever...Well dear there was a day or two before I left camp and for two days after I got into the hospital that I was not able to write...I’m entirely free from disease. Yet I shall remain here until I think I am fast able for anything... As much as I love, oh, love so much to see my darling it would be imprudent you to come here...’ He goes on to explain why their visit would be ‘unsatisfactory’, concluding the letter with loving sentiments. Both letters bear some spotting throughout, with trivial holes and tears that do not intrude on the text. This lot is accompanied by a tintype photo of an unidentified man although presumed to be Dodd himself as this lot came directly from his descendants. The photo is presented in an ornate oval brooch; WITH a Duke’s Cigarettes booklet, 15 pp. 1.5 x 2.75 in., [n.p., n.d.], giving a short history of Union General, Don Carlos Buell. The cover features an illustrated portrait of Buell, the verso bearing a bald eagle and a circular image of the American flag. The booklet is held within a protective plastic case, 3.25 x 5.5 in., and a Duke’s Cigarettes trading card, 2.5 x 4 in., honoring General Braxton Bragg with a short biography on the verso. The cover features a portrait of Bragg and an illustration of two Confederate soldiers on the battlefield. Five pieces, overall very good.
A rare and most desirable relic a small section of the last Confederate flag to fly over the Capitol of the Confederacy in Richmond Virginia. The remnant is an approx. 2 x 1.5 in. section of beige cloth removed from the Third National flag which was seized by Union soldiers when the city fell on April 3 1865. A section of the flag came into the hands of Methodist minister John O. Foster who is said to have preached the first sermon in the city after its capture. He found himself in the Confederate Treasury where he helped himself to bonds of all types and denominations now worthless. At about the same time he obtained section of the capitol's flag to which he affixed the bonds and a label: 'Confederate Money Valuable as Curios. Pieces of flag floating over Capitol at Richmond day of capitulation'. After securing the bonds and flag remnants Foster then preached (under guard) at the Presbyterian Church to an audience composed largely of newly-freed slaves. Double-matted with one corner of the flag remnant turned-up to expose a portion of the bond beneath with descriptive label beneath. Flag was examined by noted textile/flag expert Fonda Thompson and approved verso bears attribution as to flag's provenance.
OLIVER ELLSWORTH (1745 - 1807) American politician, delegate to the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. War-date D.S. 'O. Ellsworth', 1p. 8vo., Hartford, Mar. 27, 1777, payment order instructing that Enoch Pierce be paid one pound five shillings for 'Services for the Public...' Following his receipt of funds, Pierce endorsed the order on verso. Fine.
CHARLES MANSON (1934 - 2017) Drifter whose 'family' committed the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969. A.L. (unsigned), 16pp. 4to., California, Feb. 13, 1980, to his biographer, Nuel Melton, who had once been jailed with and later befriended Manson. In part: '...the Supreme Court passed a law and said on paper this law will help Charles Manson. A few years ago everyone said I could write a writ of habeus corpus and get out...there are 100's of laws broken to put me in this cage...a kid can get more truth from the drug dealer or a wine-o in the gutter than they can from their own grown-ups...You can put right on the wrong side and call it right for a time but only a time, because it will turn it all around and what won't turn around and can't come down will go mad and loose the will - they been losing will in the money is growing weak with the money - I told them 10 years ago but there was no one who believed in anything but money...King James had a prison as did the Romans and Greeks but here we are stuck in the shadows...The warden in 1980 keeps paying the guard in that hallway and don't have the time to think it through to see he's living and doing a job in doubts and fears of others already gone...Everyone for years has been making it off the back of fear, doubts and crime...the soul is real - the mind is good but the soul is behind the mind - you can undermine or kill the soul of a person or a body of people...If all a cop works for is t.v. images and money - any crook can get a t.v. show and pay the cop to destroy his own country...a fool could see snitches lie and people that don't snitch must be telling the truth...I was raised up to believe your word is all you are and all you got...they won't come down and say you right Charlie if you don't give the last asshole his rights we lost rights for all...if I start a world change it falls back on me to change it and if I try...then we all go with Rev. Jones...Sheila - she says she's my cousin but she's unknown to me - She keeps trying to put her daughter up my ass. She got left with a pinkie and wants to justify it to me...If she don't want white people on earth tell her to go where she wants but to leave me alone. I didn't judge her and don't want the job of judge unless I get a judge's robe...' Chipping to the top margin of a few pages, and a few spots of foxing, else very good. Accompanied by holograph envelope.
