Lot 722

Zwintscher, Oskar. 1870 Leipzig - 1916 Dresden. Provenienz: Familienbesitz Ruth Ribbentrop verh. Kress, 1999 Privatbesitz Bad Oeynhausen, zuletzt als Leihgabe im Stadtmuseum Meißen. Zwintscher, Oskar Portrait of a young woman.1894. Oil on canvas, r. o. signed and dat. "O. Zwintscher (18)94". Repaired damage r. top. corner under signature, small parts of peeling paint layer at upper centre margin and lower left corner. Two tiny holes in the upper left corner. 81 x 66 cm. Carved leaf frame, old frame label Pietro de Vecchio Leipzig. 105 x 90,5 cm incl. frame.

SUFFRAGE HANDKERCHIEFSatirical handkerchief titled 'Women's rights and what came of it '1981'', depicting women of the future fulfilling traditional male roles such as Politics, Science, Law, the Army, Navy and Police, a group of men doing the laundry ('Now we're busy') and a group of 'Frozen Out M.D.'s' complaining 'We've got no work to do-o-o', printed in black on fine cotton, registered number 364805, in fine condition, one or two small marks, 610 x 545mm. [1881]Footnotes:THE CONSEQUENCES OF ALLOWING WOMEN THE VOTE.This satirical handkerchief warns of what life would be like in 100 years if women were given equal rights, predicting the unconceivable possibility of women working in traditionally male roles, and showing a future where men are forced to (somewhat haplessly) undertake roles previously the preserve of women. The design '...contains all the tropes – the embodiment of light-hearted, but deeply-rooted prejudice – that are now so familiar to us through the comic postcards that were produced in response to the suffragette campaign in the years before the First World War...' (Elizabeth Crawford, Women and Her Sphere blog, September 2015). The design number was registered on 7 May 1881 by Carslaw & Henderson, fabric manufacturers, of 68 Gordon Street, Glasgow (Museum of London website). It is thought by the family that this suffrage handkerchief may have been given as a gift to the vendor's great grandmother Emma Laming Shepherd (1855-1930) possibly on her marriage to William Tombs (1858-1942) in August 1881. Three generations of the vendor's family were in service to the households of Richard Attlee (1795-1873) and his son Henry (1842-1908), and were held in high regard. Emma was the illegitimate child of Martha Laming, who held the position of maid with the Attlees and she, in her turn, was taken on as nursemaid to the Attlee children and is listed as part of the household in the 1881 census. On her marriage, it is believed that the Attlees gave her a house in Clapham Park, London so she could support herself by taking in lodgers. Her daughter Cecilia also worked for the family as lady's maid and was a childhood friend of the future Prime Minister, Clement Attlee.Provenance: Emma Laming Shepherd (1855-1930); thence by descent. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

BORGES (JORGE LUIS)Autograph manuscript of his short story 'Funes el memorioso', signed ('Jorge Luis Borges') at the end, headed 'Para la Nación' above the title, with the author's ink deletions, corrections and insertions on each page, 4pp., recto only, written in Borges's minute hand in brown and black ink, horizontal creases where previously folded, folio, [c.1942]Footnotes:MEMORY, INSOMNIA, NEUROSCIENCE AND AUTISM: AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT OF 'FUNES THE MEMORIOUS' - ONE OF BORGES'S MOST ENIGMATIC AND WRITTEN ABOUT SHORT STORIES.'Funes el memorioso' was first published on page 3 of the Arts and Letters section of La Nación on 7 June 1942, with an illustration by Alejandro Sirio, and two years later it was included in the second part ('Artfices') of his acclaimed second volume of short stories, Ficciones. Set in 1884, it tells the story of Ireneo Funes, a teenager living in the Uruguyan town of Fray Bentos (where it is thought that Borges was fathered). Fol1owing a head injury suffered falling from a horse, Funes develops an extraordinary capacity for remembering everything possible. Academics, philosophers and scientists are still searching for interpretations of this complex story. We have not traced any other manuscripts of 'Funes', nor are any included in Daniel Balderston's census at the end of How Borges Wrote (University of Virginia Press, 2008). Comparing the text of this draft with the one printed in La Nación has not been possible, but there are divergences from the version published in Ficciones: for example, in the first paragraph of our manuscript the phrase 'género obligatorio en el Uruguay, cuando el tema es un uruguayo' has been deleted but does appear later in print; and in the penultimate paragraph of the manuscript 'Repito que el menos importante de sus recuerdos era más minucioso y más vivo que nuestra percepción de las imágines en un calidoscopio' becomes '...de nuestra percepción de un goce físico o de un tormento físico' in print. There are also some minor corrections and numerous paragraph break changes.Provenance: Lame Duck Books, purchased 2006; private collection. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
