A Great War Gallantry group of four comprising A Military Cross engraved to the reverse 'Capt A. Thomson, Somme. March 1918.' War Medal and Victory Medal named to 25/12 Major A. Thomson NZEF, the Victory Medal with Mention in Dispatches Oak leaf, and a New Zealand Territorial Medal for 12 years service named to Thomson R of O. With accompanying miniatures and a photograph of the recipient in later years as a school master. Captain Alexander Thomson's Military Cross was awarded as part of the King's Birthday list whilst serving with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and is recorded in the London Gazette 30716, 3rd June 1918, page 6474. His mention in despatches was gazetted in issue 30706, page 6204 on the 24th May 1918. A Great War pair comprising War Medal and Victory medal named to A. Ellis V.A.D. the Victory Medal with mention in dispatches oak leaf, and a County of Cheshire British Red Cross Society enamel badge named to 8627 Agnes Ellis. Agnes Ellis served with the Voluntary Aid Detachment with the Red Cross as a civilian in Boulogne. *CR: Medals on original ribbons with some signs of wear. Having been framed they are in excellent condition. *BP 22.5% (18.75% plus VAT) plus a lot fee of £8 inc. VAT on each lot.

The Mametz Wood and Pilckem Ridge M.M. and Bar group of four medals to Warrant Officer William George Eldridge, Royal Army Medical Corps: Military Medal, George V, with Second Award Bar (30210 SJT: W. ELDRIDGE. 45/F.A. R.A.M.C.); 1914-15 Star (30210. SJT. W. ELDRIDGE, R.A.M.C.); British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal (30210 W. O. CL. 1. W. G. ELDRIDGE. R.A.M.C.); mounted for wearing, some edge bruising (regimental number obscured by it on BWM), otherwise about very fine. [4]; together with the recipient's 2nd Class Warrant, and his certificate of discharge to the reserve. M.M. London Gazette 21/10/1916 Bar to M.M. London Gazette 18/10/1917 The circumstances of these awards are described in the unit war diaries. In the first case Sergeant Eldridge is mentioned by name, as having done gallant work "9 August 1916 in evacuating and looking after casualties during a heavy bombardment of Mametz Wood and carrying on with the work of receiving gassed men from a dugout after Captain Raymond (R.A.M.C.) had been wounded and later Captain Hamilton (RAMC) had been gassed" The second relevant entry, for 30-31/07/1917 describes the work done by his unit in an exposed position during the battle of Pilckem Ridge. CL. 1. A. W. GALLEY. R.A.); Victory Medal (165308 TPTR. A. E. GALLEY. R.A.)*; Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, Edward VII (70961 B.Q.M. SJT: A. W. GALLEY. R.F.A.); Meritorious Service Medal, George V (51626 B. S. MJR: A. W. GALLEY. A. BY: 63/BDE: R.F.A.), mounted for wearing, near very fine and better. [5] M.S.M. London Gazette: 04/06/1917 Born in 1871 in Essex and worked as a labourer before joining the R.A. in February 1889. Servied in Gibraltar, Aden and India, and awarded the L.S.G.C. Medal in 1907, before being discharged, on completion of his 21 year term of service, in 1910. Recalled from the reserve in September 1914, and awarded the M.S.M. in 1917 "for valuable services rendered with the Armies in the Field" in France. Offered with research. * Possibly this man's son, Alfred Edward.

The M.S.M. group of five medals to Warrant Officer Thomas Oliver Morley, Royal Engineers: 1914-15 Star (26724 SPR: T.O. MORLEY. R.E.); British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal (26724 2 CPL. T. O. MORLEY. R.E.); Regular Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, George V (1844723 SJT. T. O. MORLEY. R.E.); Meritorious Service Medal, George VI (1844723 W.O. CL. 2. T. O. MORLEY. R.E.), display mounted, edge bruising, near very fine. [5] A blacksmith from Portsmouth, Morley enlisted in the R.E. in August 1914 aged 23 years, and served in France with 23rd Field Company until sustaining a wound to the head at Loos, 29/09/1915, and being hospitalized to the U.K. He returned to active service in Salonika in January 1916, where he contracted malaria. In the inter-war period he served in Dublin and India, received his LS.G.C. in 1933, and his M.S.M. between 1949 and 1953. Offered with research.

The Great War pair of medals to Private Osbert Edward Hotchkiss, 1st/18th Batallion London Regiment (London Irish Rifles), together with the Memorial Plaque and Scroll issued in commemoration of this man's sacrifice: British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal (6590 PTE. O. E. HOTCHKISS 18-LOND. R.); Memorial Plaque (OSBERT EDWARD HOTCHKISS); displayed in a glazed oak frame together with the Memorial Scroll and associated items. Private Hotchkiss died 13/07/1917. His battalion was in the line and had endured heavy shelling. Provenance: The Paul Morrissey Collection.
