Early Muromachi period 14th century. Illustrated and described in Japanese, English and German in 'Tsuba' by Günther Heckmann, H.U.B. Verlag Nürtingen, 1995. No. T2.The Tsuba, the guard of the Japanese sword, has always been considered one of the most esteemed possessions of a warrior. For both, the humble foot soldier as well as the high ranked Samurai, the tsuba was of great significance. Simple open work in early tsuba as well as lavish and intricate techniques, often allow us only an idea of what the owner was attempting to express. Intellectual principles, mostly with a deep religious background, have been woven into a group of artifacts which illustrate as clearly as any others, the cultural and sociological development of Japan throughout history. dimensions 7.9 x 8.1 x 0.3 cm.
