A Letter on the Abolition of the Slave Trade; Addressed to the Freeholders of Yorkshire, London, 1807, 8vo, contemporary half calf (very worn, covers detached). FIRST EDITION. PMM 232(b); Sabin 103953.SLAVERY - William WILBERFORCE (1759-1833).  A Letter on the Abolition of the Slave Trade; Addressed to the Freeholders of Yorkshire. London: "Printed by Luke Hansard & Sons, for T. Cadell and W. Davies, Strand; And, J. Hatchard, Piccadilly," 1807. 8vo (211 x 133mm). (Without the half title, small stain to upper margin of title and the first few leaves not affecting letters, small hole in one contents leaf not affecting letters, tear to Y4 with neatly stitched repair touching one letter, closed tear without loss to upper margin of final text leaf, 3 puncture holes at gutter, some very light mainly marginal spotting and staining, a few darker spots, for instance, to the margin of the verso of E3 and recto of E4, without the publisher's advertisements at the end.) Contemporary half calf and marbled boards (very worn, both boards detached, heavily rubbed with erosion to spine and corners). Provenance: "Willm. Henry Ho ... [word cropped after "o"], Feb. 1809" (signature at head of title); some illegible old pencil annotation to front pastedown. FIRST EDITION of this fundamental abolitionist work which is notable both for its appeal to reason and to the emotions, and for encouraging, as in the following printed passage, a direct empathy for the enslaved: "Conceive, if you can, the agony with which, as he [the newly enslaved man] is hurried away by his unfeeling captors, he looks back upon his native village which contains his wife and children who are left behind; or, supposing them to have been carried off also, with which he sees their sufferings, and looks forward to the dreadful future; while his own anguish is augmented by witnessing theirs. Accompany him through his long and painful march to the coast; behold him, when the powers of nature are almost exhausted by fatigue and affliction, urged forward like a brute by the lash, or, with still more bitterness of suffering, seeing the fainting powers of his wretched wife or daughter roused into fresh exertions by the same savage discipline. Behold him next brought on shipboard and delivered over to men, whose colour, appearance, language, are all strange to him, while every object around must excite terror ..." (from pp.341-342). "One most obvious characteristic of Wilberforce was the singular personal attractiveness of which his biographers confessed their inability to give any adequate description. His transparent kindliness and simplicity made him lovable even to his antagonists. He escaped contamination at the cost of standing aside from the world of corruption and devoting himself to purely philanthropical measures. Though profoundly convinced of the corruption of human nature in general, he loved almost every particular human being ..." (DNB, edited). PMM 232(b): "... [F]inally on 25 March 1807 the royal assent was given to a bill abolishing the trade in slaves. This, signalized by Wilberforce's Letter, was the first major victory for the [abolitionist] movement"; Sabin 103953.

A late 19th century French gorge cased carriage clock with alarm and hour repeatFrançois-Arsène Margaine, Paris. Retailed by J. E. Caldwell and Co., Philadelphia, No. 11728Surmounted by a rippled handle above a large escapement observation window, the moulded cornice over bevelled glass panels supported by four grooved uprights, on a moulded base. The white enamel Roman dial signed for the retailer J. E. Caldwell & Co Philadelphia over Made in France, with blued steel moon hands, and subsidiary Arabic alarm dial. The triple spring barrel movement with silvered and jewelled English lever platform escapement and cut and compensated bimetallic balance, the lower edge of the backplate stamped 11728 with Margaine's beehive trademark. Ticking, striking and alarming. 19cms (7ins) highFootnotes:According to contemporary trade directories, Margaine was listed in 1869 as a clock maker, wheel cutter and mechanic. That same year, he received a patent for an alarm mechanism for miniature carriage clocks. A year later, in 1870, he was no longer mentioned as cutting wheels, and by 1873 he was being listed strictly as a clockmaker, registering his well known beehive trademark the following year.He was renowned for making high quality, high-end clocks, with unique handles, though catalogues from his workshop indicate that he produced a wide range of carriage clocks from a timepiece only clock through to grande sonnerie with month, day and moon dials. The choice of case was equally diverse from a standard Anglaise case through to a gorge or bambu case with either Limoges or Cloisonne panels. It seems that the majority of the movements would have been bought in rough form from eminent makers and companies (such as Japy freres), whereas the case and dial would be made in Margaine's workshop. In addition to the above-mentioned alarm patent, he also received two patents for carriage clock case ornamentation, including a method of decoration which involved solid-coloured sides overlaid with pierced panels. A further two patents were also gained; one for a carriage clock remontoir escapement and another for an 'improved' carriage clock striking mechanism. The lowest serial number found is 444 and the highest is 20879, suggesting a potential output over his career of more than 20,000 clocks. He died in 1915; there is some evidence that his business was taken over by Henri Doffe, a graduate of the Parisian horological school, l'Ecole de l'Horlogerie de Paris that Margaine helped to start in 1881. It remains unknown if Doffe wound up or continued the business, either under Margaine's name or his own.Wotruba, T. Malta.- Acciard (Michele) Mustafà Bassà di Rodi schiavo in Malta, o sia la di lui congiura all'occupazione di Malta, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece after Richard Dalton, title with woodcut ornament, decorative woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials, engraved armorial bookplate, some light browning, scattered foxing, small damp-stain to fore-margin towards end, contemporary vellum, rubbed and lightly soiled, spine with a couple very small portions of loss, 4to, Naples, Appresso Benedetto ed Ignazio Gessari, 1751.⁂ A controversial account of the 1749 Muslim slave revolt in Malta, a failed conspiracy to assassinate Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca and take over the island. This work, also attributed to the historian and patriot Francesco Agius de Soldanis, attacked the order and argued for the rights of the Maltese, questioning the governing ability of the Grand Master. Following its publication copies were sought out and destroyed, with de Soldanis having to defend himself to Pope Benedict XIV. Scarce, we can trace only one copy at auction (Sotheby's, 1974).
