Ocean Going Liner Interest - Early to mid 20th Century inlaid mahogany oval occasional table, probably from the steamship 'SS Orontes', the oval top with large ebonised central panel, inscribed in chalk 'Orontes' beneath, on ebony-strung frieze and four confirming tapering square section supports with spade feet, the X stretcher with central circular boss drilled for fixing, 76cm x 53.5cm x 68cm high SS Orontes was built in 1929 at Barrow-in-Furness by Vickers Armstrong Ltd and was a passenger ship owned by the Orient Line (P & O) until 1940, it sailed between England and Australia - including carrying the victorious 1932-33 England cricket team (the infamous 'Bodyline' series), it was refitted in 1940 to serve as a troop ship during World War II. It was eventually scrapped in Valencia, Spain in 1962.
