A 19th century Staffordshire flat back figure group, entitled 'Tam O' Shanter and Sooter Johnny'. A poem by Robert Burns. The story goes that a farmer, Tam O' Shanter, whilst returning from Ayr late one night well primed with liquor, passed the Kirk of Alloway. Seeing lights, he stopped and looked in and saw warlocks and witches dancing to the sound of bagpipes played by Old Nick. Impelled by the sight of one 'winsome wench' among the bedlams, Tam shouted, 'Weel done Cutty Sark!'. Immediately the lights went out and witches made for Tam. Tam leapt onto his grey mare, Meg, and spurred her forwards, but just as he reached the middle of the bridge over the Doom where he would be out of the 'Cutty Sark', she seized the mare's tail, which was still within her jurisdiction and pulled it off. 'The carlin caught her by the rump, and left poor Maggie scarce a stump!'. 12" high.
