Royal Artillery: (London Gazette). Slightly wounded, Barossa, 5 March 1811 (London Gazette). 2nd Capt. 11 Aug 1811. Mentioned in Lt. Gen. Campbell`s letter dated Gibraltar, 3 Jan 1812 (Tarifa: "On the 31st (Dec 1811), between eight and nine o`clock in the morning, the enemy (having effected a breach in the east wall of the town) advanced with two thousand picked men, grenadiers and light infantry, to assault the place. Eight companies of the 87th Regiment, under the orders of Lieytenant-Colonel Gough, were stationed on the walls in that district of the town...From the spirited beahviour of this corps, aided by well directed fire from two field-pieces mounted on the north-east tower, under the command of Captain Mitchell, of the Royal Artillery, which flanked the column as it advanced, the enemy was broken and dispersed with great slaughter.") (London Gazette) Bvt. Major, Royal Artillery, 17 March 1814. Blakeney, p. 137 (Tarifa, 20 April 1810: " This demonstration against Tarifa was attended with but few results or casualties, one man only, a gunner, being killed and a few more wounded. Lieutenant Mitchell, a gallant officer, commanded the artillery."), pp. 154, 165-6 (Jan 1811: "In this expedition, as in all others which we made from Tarifa (too numerous to be mentioned), we were accompanied by Lieutenant Mitchell, Royal Artillery. In Tarifa he was an artilleryman, pointing the guns from the bastion most exposed; in the field he was a light bob, foremost in pricking for the foe; and on the occasion just mentioned he acted in a third capacity, for he reconnoitered the fort of Casa Vieja, guessed its capabilities from outward demonstration, ascertained the strength of its defences by personal observation and formally reported thereon with all the inherent pomp and gravity of a Royal Engineer.")
1907-08 ASHES TEST SERIES: A RARE AND UNPUBLISHED HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM ARTHUR JONES (ENGLAND TEAM CAPTAIN) TO GEORGE GUNN CONGRATULATING HIM ON HIS TEST DEBUT APPEARANCE. The letter from Arthur Jones was written whilst on board the R.M.S. Omrah sailing from Brisbane to Sydney the letter reads: My Dear George, I had hoped that I would be able to write you and congratulate you on winning your first Test Match, but when I got the result in hospital I was knocked back and disappointed that I felt I hadn`t the heart to write anyone. Of course I have not yet heard anything but paper comments and shall have to wait until I see some of the team before I know the real truth. Of course I felt not playing myself very much indeed, but I have the consolation of knowing that my loss was your gain, and I am so pleased to think now that I told Major Trevor that you must play in the match. Well George you can have no idea how pleased my wife and myself were at your success: I consider it one of the finest performances that has ever been done in a test match. I wish you had got that other 100. I hope you can read this, but my hand is so unsteady with being in bed, that I can hardly write. This is my first day out and as you can see by the notepaper, I am on "the Briny" on the way to Sydney, the Doctor letting me leave Brisbane, only on the condition that I don`t go to Melbourne to see a test match, so I don`t suppose I shall see you again until Adelaide. I don`t feel a bit like cricket, it takes me all my time to walk and I am as weak as a kitten. The last four days I was in hospital the doctor came every morning and dug a huge needle in my back and pumped the filthiest looking muck out of my right lung you ever saw, but it has done me good and he says with a little quite care I shall be sounder than I ever was. Well George I must stop the epistle, but again congratulating you on your fine performance and hoping you luck will continue. Your sincerely, A O Jones. congratulate Joe Hardstaff for me on his 60 the letter on R.M.S. Omrah headed notepaper and signed in ink by Arthur Jones.
