Rare Victorian cased Linnet and Eureka 27 guttie golf ball c. 1890 - by Naturalists Pratt & Son Brighton - on the side panel there is hand written label describing the unfortunate event at Mitcham Golf Club July 15th 1890 which reads " with Major O`Grady and they Ñ Ñ Ñ an exciting foursomes all square at the 17th hole at which I drove a good ball-only went 40 yards hit the Linnet and cut the head off - the bird and ball fell into Ñ Ñ Ñ Bush. Irish Commonplace book of poetry (some original), songs and prose, manuscript, 144pp., reverse entries, small naive drawing made up of coloured onlays entitled: "Lieutenant O`Flannaghan" at beginning, later pencil notes on front pastedown: "Irish Commonplace Book...", slightly browned, hinges a little weak, original half sheep, worn, joints splitting, sm. 4to, [?Enniskillen, early nineteenth century]. ***Original poems and songs include: "A Father`s soliloquy of the dead body of an infant son"; "O doleful to tell you the Time is now near"; "On the Wings of the Wind" etc; and extracts from Shakespeare, James Montgomery, Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott. Heads include: "Christ expiring on the Cross"; "Respect due to the Old Men" etc..
West Indies.- Cochrane (Jane, daughter 24pp., sm. 4to & folio, Basseterre, Guadeloupe, Matouba & Chapel House, near Bognor, 1810-14, life in the West Indies and much relating to her father`s position as governor, "Sometimes we have eight Navy Captains at dinner at once to night my father flies his flag [11 Dec. 1810] and at 8 o clock tomorrow morning all the ships salute the new Commander in Chief. . On Sunday upwards of 30 of the principal inhabitants came to pay their respects to mamma. I have not yet commenced speaking French the black people speak so ill that it is almost impossible to understand them. They dress much better than at Barbadoes the country people there only wear a petticoast and a handkerchief on their head in this manner.", and life in England and various other topics, "What a provoking and what a distressing thing the late fraud or hoax as Cobbet calls it upon the Stock Exchange has been. Lord Cochrane has vindicated himself as far as lays in his power, bu the Committee do not seem to be satisfied yet. Cobbet blames him for condescending to explain what passed at his house on the 21st of February.", small tears along some folds, a little creased, slightly browned.
