WWII - Belsen. A contemporary account by a ‘British padre’ and his experiences of encountering Belsen concentration camp in April 1945, two and a half leaves of cyclostyled sheets from a typewritten original, ‘I don’t know whether I ought to write this. Something seems to tell me that many may say it is a flight of my imagination; others may say that at least there is a semblance of truth in what I write, but that I have laid on the colours much too thickly. But for all that, I feel it ought to be done. Numbers of other people have done it. But it will do no harm for hundreds more to do the same. This is so ghastly a story that the whole world should know about it’, describing the beautiful scenery around the camp which served to hide the hideous doings which occurred in the camps hidden behind the undulating hills and vast pine forest. The unidentified author gives statistical and first-hand details of what he saw and knows of the life in the camps, the starvation, the appalling sanitary conditions, plus the improvements, the SS men and women and their Commandant Josef Kramer, printed to rectos and stapled at upper corner, together with thirteen leaves from an official printed report on Belsen concentration camp, pp. 399-411, marked ‘Appendix “O” to Chapter 7’, printed to rectos only with b & w illusts. from photos on five leaves plus one diagrammatic map of the camp, a little browned and brittled at margins, all foolscap folio. Although the author does not identify himself it may well be the Reverend T.J. Stretch from the Holy Trinity Church, Aberyswyth, who was attached as padre to the formation concerning the Bergen-Belsen Camp. (16)
