J. H. Rose Bookseller VIEW OF CAPE TOWN FROM TABLE BAY Cape Town: J. H. Rose Bookseller, circa 1900 first edition 60 by 35cm printed by Erst Kaufmann, Baden framed. Please note that below the card cutout mounting board the print mount shows fishmoth damage. There is also insect damage and scarring in the sky portion of the print for a 40cm length above Table Mountain. An attempt has been made to paint over some of the scarring. Nevertheless a scarce print. Small hole at 3 o`clock centre.

Baker, Sergeant F. ATHE ANGLO-BOER WAR KEEPSAKES OF SERGEANT F. A. BAKER WORCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT 1899-1902The Collection comprises of the following: Pair of Anglo-Boer War Medals: Queen`s South Africa Medal 2 clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State and King`s South Africa Medal: 2 clasps South Africa 1901; South Africa 1902. Both medals officially impressed "3710 Serjit F Baker Worcester Regt." (EF) medal ribbons need replacing ? Finely carved riding crop - the top terminates in the shape of a horse`s head. Baker obviously purchased this from the Boer Prisoner of War who had carved it. Baker added two silver rings to the top and middle of the crop engraved with his initials `F.A.B.`. The top portion of the wooden handle of the crop has a barley twist design with the carved legend "J.P. P. O. W. Boer Camp Ceylon 1900-1902". There is a possibility that Baker spent part of his war service guarding Boer Prisoners of War in Ceylon, length 70cm ? Birmingham 1901 silver vesta case with Baker`s initials engraved `F.A.B.` ? Amber cheroot holder 9ct gold 1906 mouthpiece contained in a Birmingham 1905 hinged tapering case with loop at the bottom end ? Collapsible hinged campaign spoon (white metal) ? A `Waterman`s Ideal Fountain Pen` completely enveloped with a fretted engraved silver design fitted over the body of the pen with Baker`s engraved initials `F.A.B.`. In original titled card box by L. G. Sloan Ltd, The Pen Corner, Kingsway, London WC2 complete with instruction pamphlet and empty glass ink phail. ()

Von Below, Herman WilhelmSTEEL TRAVELLING TRUNK53 by 28 by 19cmSteel travelling trunk with reinforcements, 3 hinged brass locks with brass sliding rod and carrying handlesThe trunk is painted khaki and carries the chisselled inscription in the paint "H. Von Below P. O. W. Springs, Transvaal". Comments: H. Von Below received the Anglo-Boer Oorlog Medalje for his service in the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902. He was a Prisoner of War on St. Helena. He had served in the German and later the Boksburg Commandos. A unique survival, accompanied by a copy of his application for the Anglo-Boer Oorlog Medalje with service details. He was captured in June 1900 at Sand Rivier and released from captivity on 1st August 1902. (1)
Murabito, S.MORTE FRANCESCO 3RD AGOSTO 1530Sonderwater, Pretoria: n.p., circa 194558 by 102cmmagnificently carved wooden high relief plaque showing 13 Italian Soldiers engaged in battle, wearing full Renaissance armour, with suitably decorated background. The whole surrounded by an intricately carved foliate border. The plaque is probably unique in P.O.W. art of World War II. Comments: The plaque has the inscription `S. MURABITO P. O. W.` and is accompanied by a letter of provenance in affidavit form, stating that Murabito was incarcerated in the Zonderwater P.O.W. Camp, near Cullinan during World War II. After the war Murabito returned to Italy where he continued his career as an artist. During 1947 a sale of P.O.W. artifacts, produced by the Italians, was held at Zonderwater to raise funds. The wooden plaque was purchased by the vendor`s mother. (1)

1901-1940 Fitzwilliam Square Accounts and Minutes books 13 by 9 in.Two volumes full of interesting manuscript content relating to the finances and upkeep of the Square. Including notes relating to the Fitzwilliam Ward Recruiting Committee during the First World War and the distribution of `Certificates of Honour` in the Square. Problems caused by the Royal Air Force, who occupied two houses in the Square during the war including their inconsiderate use of motor horns at early hours and refusal to pay `Square Tax` for the maintenance of the area as “the Crown... is not bound by any Act of Parliament or bye-law imposing taxes on private individuals..”. With some well known names recorded and signatures of Dermod O`Brien, John F. Cunningham, Dr. Brian Pringle, Dr. F. S. Bourke, the Jellet family etc. While others such as Jack B. Yeats lived on the Square during the period covered. (2 items)

Reverse engraved `Won by D Coy 4/ The Connaught Rangers, 5575. Pte J. O`Neill.` Hallmarked Dublin 1914 and with maker`s mark `J.S.`5575 Private James O`Neill served in Gallipoli with the Connaught Rangers from 29 October 1915.
1915: Letters from John O`Connor MP relating to a cargo of rifles for John Redmond 7.5 by 5.5 in.Manuscript.Two letters on House of Commons Library headed paper, hand written and signed by John O`Connor, Irish Parliamentary Party MP for North Kildare, sent to Henry Givens Burgess, a member of the Dublin Port and Docks Board and later an Irish Free State Senator. The first dated 20 May 1915 and stating that O`Connor will send Burgess` account for the cargo of rifles to Mr. Redmond and urge him to pay at once. The second dated 26 May 1915 stating that O`Connor had been unable to get payment from the treasury after being "laughed out of court".
1915: O`Donovan Rossa funeral armband 5 by 8 in.A white cloth armband with stitched back and purple cloth, decorated with the word "Rossa" Used during the funeral of Jeremiah O`Donovan Rossa on 1 August 1915. During the funeral Patrick Pearse gave his now famous graveside oration which ended with the words "... the fools, the fools, the fools! They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace" An extremely interesting piece relating to one of the most important events in the Irish independence movement.
