Roman Bronze Epigraphic Dedicatory PlaqueLate 2nd-early 3rd century AD A dedicatory plaque, rectangular with trapezoidal tabs, with impressed text in Roman capitals: I(ovi) O(ptimo) M(aximo) DOL(icheno) / IVNON(i) REGI(nae) / V[a]LER(ia) INGEN / VA EX IVSSO / DEI POSVIT with punched points between pairs of letters in the bottom row and elsewhere To Jupiter Best and Greatest Dolichenus and to Queen Juno, Valeria Ingenua set (this) up at the command of the god. 16 grams, 98 mm. (4"). Ex Riley collection, UK; found North-East England. Jupiter Dolichenus was popular in the late 2nd-early 3rd century AD in Britain, conflated with Rome`s principal divinity, Jupiter Optimus Maximus, whose consort was Juno Regina (`the Queen`) referred to in this text. The dedicator of the plaque is a woman. The shape of the plaque, `tabula ansata`, is typical of such plaques fixed on other objects, frequently stone. Seán Keating PRHA (1889-1978) Study for "Portrait of Father Michael O'Flanaghan" (1936) Pencil and charcoal on card, 45 x 38cm Signed This is a study for the "Portrait of Father Michael O' Flanagan " which was exhibited at the RHA in 1936 and is in the collection of The National Museum of Ireland. It is currently included in the exhibition "Seán Keating : Contemporary Contexts" at The Crawford Gallery Cork which runs until 27th October. Father Michael O'Flanagan (1876 - 1942) was born at Cloontower near Castlerea in Co. Rosscommon. He was quite an interesting character,he gave the oration at the lying in state of O'Donovan Rossa. He managed Count Plunkett's successful campaign in the Rosscommon by-election and was vice-President of Sinn Fein from 1917 and was suspended from official religious duties many times because of his political activities in the 1920's. He did not resume his clerical responsibilities until 1938 but in the meantime he served as President of Sinn Fein between 1933 - 35. During the Spanish Civil War Father O' Flanaghan defended the Spanish Republic which was not in line with Irish Catholic Church policy, but was in sympathy that of Keating and his wife May. He toured America in support of the Spainish Republic in 1937. Our thanks to Dr Éimear O'Connor for her help and research which were invaluable in cataloguing this lot.
