An Edwardian three train striking longcase clock, with 9 tubes and a 12.5 inch arch brass dial with silvered chapter ring, subsidiary seconds dial, Chime/Silent lever at 12 o`clock and Whittington/Westminster lever at 3 o`clock, the arch with a silvered boss inscribed Tempus Fugit, the case with stringing and Corinthian capitals columns, above a glazed tracery trunk door, on bracket feet, 92.5in (235cm) h.
Charles Dickens interest. A George IV mahogany and brass mounted correspondence box, the hinged lid centred a later oval plaque inscribed `Gerald. 13. Oct. 1918. Belonged to Auntie`, to a vacant interior previously with a tray, the underside of the lid with a hinged pull-down compartment, with gothic strapwork mounts and brass side carrying handles, with key and letter from Admiral Sir Gerald Charles Dickens, 6.5in (16.3cm) h, 15.5in (39.4cm) w, 10in (25cm) d. Provenance: This box is being sold with a handwritten letter from its previous owner Admiral Sir Gerald Charles Dickens K. C. V. O., Etc. formerly of 3 Macartney House, Greenwich Park, London S.E. 10 and the grandson of Charles Dickens. The letter states `The box with the following inscription on it `Gerald 13th October 1918 Belonged to Auntie, Auntie was Georgina Hogarth, Charles Dickens` Sister-in-law (and my great aunt) who until the latter`s death in 1870 lived at Gads Hill Place. G. C. Dickens, 25th April 1958`. Georgina Hogarth joined Dickens` household in 1842 aged 15 and stayed until his death in 1870. In 1858 she sided with Dickens in his quarrel with her sister Catherine, Dickens` wife. This resulted in Catherine moving out with her eldest son while Georgina remained in the household to care for the remaining children. According to Charles Dickens` will Georgina `Auntie` inherited: `£8,000 free of legacy and duty, all my personal jewellery and all the familiar and personal items from my writing table and room`. The above box could well have belonged to Charles Dickens, it certainly is a masculine piece and on his death passed to Georgina Hogarth and thence to his grandson Admiral Sir Gerald Charles Dickens on his 39th birthday.
ELMER O STENNES "AURORA" GIRANDOLE BANJO CLOCKA striking Elmer Osborne Stennes "Aurora" girandole banjo clock. Domed hinged screen to face with white enameled face with black Arabic numerals and gold highlights. Has black hour and minute hands. Domed reverse painted screens to neck and body. Neck depicting leaves and urn with the word `PATENT`. Body depicts the Roman Goddess Aurora on chariot, the goddess of dawn. Has beaded and scrolled gilded designs throughout with figural eagle to top. 20th century. Measures 46" height x 12 1/2" width (116.8cm x 31.7cm). Total weight of 9.02 kilograms.
GEORG JENSEN `CACTUS` & `PARALLEL` STERLING SPOONS, SIX, L 3 3/4"-4 3/4": Sterling silver includes, in the "Cactus" pattern, a set of 4 five o`clock teaspoons, L.4 1/4", and 1 sugar spoon; and in the "Parallel" pattern, 1 five o`clock teaspoon, L.4 3/4". All are stamped "Georg Jensen" in a beaded oval, "Sterling/Denmark"--post 1945. Totaling approximately 3.63 troy oz.
A collection of British banknotes, comprising one five pounds note Gill, two five pounds notes Kentfield, one five pounds note Lowther, one one pound note O`Brien, three one pound notes J.B. Page, one last issue one pound note J.B. Page, seven one pound notes, last issue, Somerset, and a ten shillings note Fforde, together with three German banknotes and two Post Office Savings Bank postage stamp saving sheets, mounted with Edward VII one penny stamps.
A father and son group of medals, associated badges and WWII flying log books completed by the recipient. Includes Royal Navy group of five awarded to W H Poppleton L. STO RN 302893; The Africa Medal with bar for Somaliland 1908-1910 engraved HMS Prosperpine; and long service medal engraved HMS Dolphin. Also WWII group of four awarded to 1457371 W/O Poppleton W including Burma Star. The log books start in June 1942 when the recipient was flight sergeant, flying a DH82 and seems training orientated. He then progressed to a Master II aircraft and was awarded his flying badge on 24th May 1943. Ft Sgt Poppleton then flew a Proctor III at RAF Madley. The log records various events such as Sgt Crabtree killed" and "F/Lt Francis landed upon Sgt Beart all OK aircraft write-offs". On Jan 6 1944 he records "Two aircraft hit on circuit two killed." From July 29th Spitfire V is being flown in action and comments incl: "Sgt Watson missing off Alexandria Sgt Gray missing" "Sgt Gray found wandering in Sinai Desert OK". The log progressed to Nov 22nd 1944 OK". The log progressed to Nov 22nd 1944 Spitfire VIIIs being flown out of Poona India. Then No 152 Hyderabad squadron. Log book Nos 2 and 3 continue with Hurricanes being flown and many more comments observations photographs clippings etc. All in all a fascinating insight into RAF operational activities during WWII "

John Noel Smith b. 1952 SPIRAL Oil on canvas 51" x 23 1/2" (130 x 60cm), signed; inscribed verso `Spirals` originates in Smiths time in Berlin through its solid blocks of colour and use of bold squares. While bold and abstract the painting insinuates movement. As with other paintings of this time, Smiths bold abstraction champions and unifies forms and motifs over language. Piece makes reference to Robert O `Byrne `Dictionary of Living Artists`
