Gravé sur un cartel dans la plinthe :" O cher enfantelet vray portraict de ton père/ Dors sur le seyn que ta bouche a pressé !/ Dors, petiot, clos amy, sur le sein de ta mère/ Tien doulx oeillet par le somme oppressé/ CLOTILDE de SURVILLE 1421" Haut. 68, Larg. 20, Prof. 25 cm. Provenance : ancienne collection du château de la Bellière, Maine-et-Loire. La publication en 1803 des poèmes inédits de Clothilde de Surville (1405-1498), poétesse médiévale, suscite une contestation parmi la critique, qui crie à l`imposture littéraire. L`appui de Joséphine de Beauharnais permet de passer outre les suspicions phallocrates. Le plâtre original de cette sculpture est présenté au Salon de 1877 (n°3808, acquis par l`Etat). Il est en dépôt au Musée de Reims. Le Musée d`Orsay à Paris conserve une épreuve en marbre. Le fondeur Barbedienne réalise les éditions dans huit tailles différentes.

8 various photographs/postcards of the R.33. Including pictures of the airship on the mast at Pulham. Together with the transcripts of telegrams to Flight Lieutenant Booth and Group Captain Fellows, sent on behalf H.M. The King and from the Air Ministry etc, offering congratulations on their skill in handling and returning the R.33 to base. GC An interesting Lot. See Plate 2 Note: On the night of 16/17th April 1925 R33 was ripped from her mast during a gale; some five hours after the initial break from the mast, the R33 was under control but still being blown towards the Continent. As the airship approached the Dutch coast the R33 was ordered to land at Cologne where the Germans could assist. Late in the evening the R33 was able to hold her position over the Dutch coast, hovering there until 5 o’clock the next morning. She was then able to make her way back home, arriving at the Suffolk coast eight hours later and making Pulham at 13:50 hrs where she was put into the shed. For their actions, the crew were rewarded by the King with the presentation of watches and the coxswain, Sergeant “Sky” Hunt, was awarded the Air Force Medal, which he insisted should be awarded to the crew as a whole.

An early continental produced tinplate clockwork Chair-O-Plane. 21cm high. This aesthetically pleasing Edwardian period toy has 2 Zeppelin airships and 2 monoplanes all with with red and grey litho detailing. All four suspended from a carousel style canopy, with a substantial central support mounted on a stepped circular central base. Fitted with a pull-back-and-go action. Multi coloured. VGC minor wear. See Plate 8

A scarce simple German clockwork tinplate Chair-O-Plane style airship/Zeppelin toy. A small example being only 20cm high. 3 early style Zeppelins with one gondola to each, suspended from a central hub, supported by four tin supports, connected to a stepped circular base. QGC age worn overall. Base slightly bent, probably repainted. See Plate 8

A rare clockwork tinplate Chair-O-Plane style airship/Zeppelin toy. 16cm high. An Edwardian tinplate toy probably produced in Germany in the form of a funfair ride, with circular motion where the speed generated forces the 3 plated gondolas (each in the style of an airship) out. The tinplate umbrella style canopy on which the 3 ‘airships’ are attached is mounted to a central pole, to the base of this is seated 3 children who also rotate as the toy is run. Red and white circular decoration to base, containing a simple clockwork motor. GC minor wear. See Plate 8

Lot 154

R100 Letter. A Letter from a Mr Suddes at Aero Engines Canada to a relative in England that was bought over by the R100’s Chief Engineer William Angus, together with an accompanying letter of apology from Angus. Angus’s letter reads: “Dear Sir, While I was in Canada with R-100 I received a letter addressed to you from Mr Suddes intending to forward the same to you when the ship arrived in England. I am sorry that the letter got mislaid but having found it I am forwarding it to you, hoping it contains nothing of great importance & that you will forgive me for my carelessness. As we are under a severe penalty for conveying letters on an airship (not being licensed by the Post Master General) please don’t make this Public. I am Yours faithfully W Angus”. Both letters are contained in a roughly opened cover, postmarked Montreal, Canada Aug 12 1930, with a R-100 Montreal 1930 cachet, and is addressed to the end recipient “c/o Mr William Y Angus, Chief Engineer, Airship “R-100”, St Hubert Airport, Montreal –CANADA”. Lot 398

2 rare 1920’s American glass bottles. To contain a root beer flavoured drink. Made by ‘John Graf Co’, the design to each bottle is a Zeppelin with ‘Graf Zep’ running top to bottom, each 23.5cm tall with a 5.5cm diameter. VGC minor wear only. See Plate 23 Note: The origins of Grandpa Graf’s root beer dates back to 1873, where John Graf first brewed the root beer on S. 41st St. and W. Greenfield Ave. in West Milwaukee. Graf then formed his own company, being Graf Beverages that produced a wide variety of soft drinks. Graf continued to brew soft drinks, but it is his root beer that is remembered the most. John Graf’s image is still on the can of root beer, in his memory of creating the hallowed beverage. His legacy was passed onto his son after his death in 1930, where his daughter (Sylvia Graf) took presidency of the company. Once she died in 1963, Lawrie O. Graf. Lawrie Graf was well known for his creative engineering skills and his education in chemistry from his study at Marquette University, and helped the company come to a national status. It was said that Graf’s beverages were being shipped by the train full all across the country. The company hit national notice quickly. Lawrie Graf continued to run the company until 1968, where he sold the company to P & V Atlas Industrial Center. Lawrie retired, and died in 1998, at the age of 84, ending the Graf legacy.

San Polo wall sconce San Polo wall sconce, Italy, glazed ceramic, colorful harlequin supports two lights, signed "San Polo Venezia Italy O. An 18 Carat Gold Pearl and Diamond Ring, a split pearl cluster with old cut diamond accents, and split pearls to the shoulders, on a yellow knife edge shank, finger size O The ring is in fair condition - one of the split pearls is missing from the shoulder. It is hallmarked with no maker`s mark, London, 1897. The approximate qualities of the diamonds are; caratweight 0.06, colour J/K/L, clarity I2/I3. Gross weight 2.4 grams. CR made 11th February 2013

A Ruby and Diamond Ring, a row of old cut diamonds in white claw settings flanked by a row of step cut rubies in a yellow channel setting to each side, in a shaped setting, on a plain polished shank, total estimated diamond weight 0.35 carat approximately, finger size O The ring is in good condition. It bears some stamps to the outer shank, but they are barely legible. In our opinion it would test as gold. The approximate qualities of the diamonds are; colour H/I/J, clarity SI2/I1/I2.
