Lot 229

A D. José (1750-1777) Portuguese silver plaque, 1768. Chiselled and partly-gilt decoration representing Pentecost. Signed and dated at the front “Ludovicus Jozephy fecit in Ulyssipone anno 1768” and at the back “Luis Jozé de Almeida a fez em Lxª 1768”. The silver work is exceptionally executed in relief showing Our Lady in the throne surrounded by the Apostles and Mary Magdalene, above the group the descent of the Holy Spirit as a dove throwing flames is surrounded by stars; architectonic ground in perspective. Rocaille silver frame with floral, shell and architectonic motifs and two reserves: one at the base with the inscription: “REGINA APOLOLORUM” and the one at the top with a royal crown in gold. Silk lined rosewood frame. (minor defects, minor bruises and the cross of the crown is missing) Note: Originally this plaque might be part of a silver lined piece of furniture as was usual at the 18th century, possibly a church tabernacle. For its exceptional characteristics of design and execution stressed by the presence of the royal crown this work is surely a royal commission. In our opinion this plaque might be part of the commission for the Capela Real da Ajuda. At S. João Baptista’s chapel in S. Roque’s church, Lisbon a mosaic by Mattia Moreti after card by Agostino Massucci (1691-1758) depicts a very similar scene. Luis José de Almeida is mentioned in SANTOS e Irene Quilhó, Reynaldo dos “Ourivesaria Portuguesa nas Colecções Particulares”, pp. 268 and 272. Provenance: Late Pedro Costa Collection Placa D. José em prata portuguesa do séc. XVIII, 1768 Prata relevada, cinzelada e parcialmente dourada representando Pentecostes. 38x22 cm (prata)

Lot 269

An Important Jiajing armorial dish, ca. 1530/50 Zhangzhou, Fujian/Guandong provinces Ming dynasty, Jiajing period circa 1530/50 Chinese porcelain Blue underglaze decoration depicting a central medallion formed by a sinuous dragon with spiralling tail, encircled by Buddhist emblems and stylized foliate pendants and enclosed by a thin band of floral springs alternating with further emblems or dots, the rim with a border interlocked x-forms. The reverse decorated with five medallions intercalated by clouds and scrolls, two medallions depicting teh IHS emblem within a crown of thorns, one with the inverted Royal Portuguese Arms and the other two with birds in a landscape. Some authors attribute the IHS insignia to the Jesuits that adopted it at the creation of the order by Saint Inácio de Loyola in 1534, others think that in this particular case IHS refers simply to Jesus traditional monogram. This dish is part of a small group of pieces, example of the first Portuguese orders for specific purposes. Drawings with Western motifs were handed to craftsmen, such us the Portuguese coat of arms and the IHS emblem, which were later involved in oriental motifs such as mythical animals or flora and Chinese fauna elements. Similar examples in Fundação Medeiros e Almeida Collection, Museu do Caramulo, Metropolitan Museum in New York, Topkapi Saray Museum, in Istabul, Princessehof Museum, Holland, and Idemitsu Museum of Arts, in Tokyo.
